Come As You Are is produced by the acclaimed Jim Sampas whose other tributes to seminal albums such as Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska w/ Johnny Cash, Aimee Mann, Ben Harper and others and The Beatles' Rubber Soul w/ Sufjan Stevens, Ted Leo, Low, and others, as well as the Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard album One Fast Move Or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur, are regarded as touchstones of the genre.
My take: I'm not a big fan of heavy metal or hard rock, but I've loved a few songs from Nirvana for many years now (and can hardly believe it's been 20 years since I first heard Smells Like Teen Spirit).  So I eagerly accepted this review, not realizing it wasn't a re-release, but rather a tribute album with covers of the originals, all by different bands.  Let me tell you, these songs aren't arranged at all the way Nirvana played them originally. Did I like it?  Most emphatically not (with one exception - Pitty's "Stay Away" would make a good addition to my work out list).  I gave a copy to one friend though who loved it!!  She said "different stylings breathed new life into classic rock!"  Another copy went to a second friend, who while not a fan of Nirvana originally, enjoyed this album specially because the arrangements of the songs were so different.  So I guess reviews are mixed on this side of town.  See below how you can win your own copy and weigh in on the "debate."

Lonestar Angel

Lonestar Angel [Paperback]
by: Colleen Coble

List Price $15.99
Paperback: 352 pages
Publisher: Thomas Nelson; Original edition (November 8, 2011)
Language: English

Book DescriptionEden’s hope is rekindled when Clay delivers astounding news: their baby girl has been found.  Five years ago Eden and Clay Larson’s baby was stolen. When they went to pay the ransom, what happened changed their lives forever—the kidnapper’s car with Baby Brianna inside sunk deep into the river. Eden blamed herself, Clay lost himself in work. Their young and rocky marriage ended. Or so Eden thought. Now Eden’s moved to a new town. She’s found faith and is trying to rebuild her life. She’s even dating again—a sweet guy named Kent who plans to marry her. But then Clay arrives out of the blue and delivers shocking news: he never signed their divorce papers, so they’re still married. What’s more, Clay has been searching for Brianna all this time. And he believes he’s found her: their daughter is in Bluebird, Texas, at a youth ranch. All five little girls there are the right age—he’s just not sure which one is Brianna. Or how she survived.  To uncover the truth, Eden and Clay sign on as counselors at Bluebird Ranch. They move into small quarters in the bunkhouse and oversee the kids as they try to find out more. Working together, they rediscover their love for each other. But danger is closing in—Eden, Clay, and all their young charges are in jeopardy. As they fight to save their family, Eden realizes that God has been fighting for them all along. And His plans are for a more abundant life than they’d ever hoped.

My take: When I read Ms. Coble's description of herself (I'm a reading addict. I'll read anything: cereal boxes, flyers, toilet paper bags. I grew up on Nancy Drew...) I was delighted to see she is just like me! If it has words on it, I'll read it (and Nancy Drew books are my favorites!). Of course, it's always nice when what I'm reading is a GOOD read, and Ms. Coble's books always fit that description for me (see The Lightkeeper's Ball review). Apparently, this book is the fourth of the Lonestar series but after reading descriptions of the others, it's obvious you can read them as stand alone novels as the plots and characters are completely different.  So what about Lonestar Angel?  Was it any good?  Of course it was.  To be sure, there were times you will need to suspend your disbelief (really, Eden can leave her fiancee that easily?)  but it IS fiction after all.  The basic story is, to borrow a cliche, a real page turner full of twists and turns I sure didn't see coming.  Lonestar Angel is a great combination of suspense, mystery, romance AND Christian fiction.  Another hit from Ms. Coble in my humble opinion.

Postcardly (giveaway and review)

How do I send my first postcard?
(Yes, it's really this easy.)

Create a Postcardly email address like grandmakay@postcardly.com

Send an e-mail with an attached photo to grandmakay@postcardly.com

We mail Grandma Kay a postcard—with your words on the back
and your photo on the front—via U.S. Mail

What is Postcardly?

Postcardly turns your emails into real-life postcards, delivered by U.S. Mail. It’s especially great for staying in touch with older family members who don’t use computers.

You can send postcards from your phone, your computer, or anywhere you have email. Just send an email with an attached photo the way you normally send an email: your photo will be on the front of the postcard, your words will go on the back.

Why use Postcardly?

People love getting pictures that they can hold in their hands. Printing and mailing pictures from your camera is a pain. Email is easy. Using Postcardly is just like using email.

How much does it cost?

Postcardly costs $4.99 a month for 5 postcards, $9.99 a month for 15 postcards, or a one-time charge of $19.99 for 20 prepaid postcards.

If you’re on a monthly plan and go over your limit, Postcardly can print additional cards for $0.99 each. You can set up your account to either automatically stop additional postcards or allow them for this additional charge.

There is no commitment. You can cancel anytime.

How many words fit on a postcard?

The short answer is about 100 words. The long answer is that there isn’t an exact number of words that will fit, since letters vary in size and the number of line breaks matters more than the number of words.

The first line of a postcard is always the subject line of your email, which appears in bold, and if it exceeds 40 characters, it will wrap to the next line.

You can always see what your postcard will look like before you send it by emailing it to preview@postcardly.com. We’ll automatically email you back with a pdf preview, and it won’t count against your monthly limit.

Read more about How Postcardly Works with this link to the rest of the FAQs.  You can find them on Facebook at:  http://www.facebook.com/postcardly

Bonus: You can get free postcards for every friend who joins. If you signed up with a monthly plan, you’ll get a free month for every friend. If you signed up for 20 postcards prepaid, you’ll get five free cards added to your account for every friend. Get enough friends to sign up, and you’ll never have to pay for Postcardly again!!!

My take:  I haven't been this excited about a product/service in quite a while - this is definitely at the top of my "why didn't I think of that?!" list.  Ever since I was a child, I have loved getting real ("snail") mail.  I mean, to a child, there is something a little magical about getting something in the mail that is just for you (anyone remember those NutraSweet gumball samples?), especially if it was a letter from a grandparent or a pen pal from far away.  Now though, with e-mail, texts, Facebook and Tweets, real mail is going the way of the dinosaur and that makes me sad.

But we can do our part to keep mail alive and well with Postcardly!  Besides, even in these times, I'm sure you know of some people that don't like computers or don't have one due to finances.  And you KNOW you have people who'd like to get a picture postcard they can put up on their refrigerator.  Postcardly lets you do that in literally minutes!  Seriously.  Within 10 minutes, I had my entire account set up and a postcard reviewed and ordered.  You can even send postcards directly from your smart phone when you take a picture that way.  And every time you add a recipient to your address book, you get an email right away with the email link to send a postcard INSTANTLY.  And there is NO risk to trying - every single new user gets 3 for free just to try the service!!  You know what I'm thinking?  This would be a PERFECT way to send your Christmas cards this year!!!!  With a few clicks, you are done!  No stuffing envelopes, no stamps, no return labels, no fuss!  Try it for yourself today!

The giveaway: One lucky winner will get 10 free Postcardlys (every new user gets 3 for free, so the 10 is just an added perk)!

To win:  Tell me who you'd send your first postcard to! Be sure to leave your email address with your comment if you are not a blogger or your email is not easily found on your blog. This giveaway is open until 11:59 p.m., EST, Thursday, December 8, 2011. Good Luck!
