Chanukah Fever (giveaway and review)

As seen on FOX-5’s ‘Good Day New York,’ NBC’s ‘Weekend Today in New York,’ SHALOM TV, and E Channel’s ‘The Soup’ …

A CHANUKAH CLASSIC FROM MAMA DONI
CHANUKAH FEVER

“FUNKY MUSIC WITH A JEWISH TWIST”

From the PR Firm:  The inimitable Mama Doni brings her special brand of “funky music with a Jewish twist” to her classic holiday CD, Chanukah Fever (Mama Doni Productions, $15, run time 36 minutes, all ages).

Doni Zasloff Thomas, a.k.a. Mama Doni, is the lead singer/songwriter of The Mama Doni Band, honored with a 2011 Parents’ Choice® Award for their recent release, Shabbat Shaboom, and winner of the Simcha Award for “Inspiring Joy Through Music” in competition with more than 100 bands from 15 different countries at the 2008 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam.

Chanukah lasts only eight days, and Mama Doni says, “Enjoy!” The popular singer/songwriter expands the horizons of traditional Jewish music, with a contagious and unexpected blend of reggae, rock, disco, Latin, klezmer and “Jewgrass” – all woven together with a hip Jewish sensibility. In Chanukah Fever, MAMA DONI spices these eclectic, colorful elements with a razor-sharp, sophisticated humor that makes latkes, dreidels and Yiddish expressions cooler than ever.

If Spike Jones and his City Slickers were Jewish, they might have created Chanukah Fever. Quirky, off-beat, and unpredictable, the album’s highlights include such songs as the title track, a dyno-mite ditty about disco dreidels, a million latkes, and dancin’ for eight whole days and nights (with as much variety as could possibly be put into one song); “Honey, This Ain’t Money!,” in which Johnny Cash meets Bubbie meets “Hot Rod Lincoln”; a completely nutty “Jewsgrass” sing-along in “Bubbie’s Mi Yamelel"; “Latke Man,” a retro-swing pop song about a potato-lovin’ fella; "The Funky Gold Menorah," a kid-friendly hip-hop dance tune about a “Super Fly” Judaica sensation; "La Vida Dreidel," a Jewish twist on Latin style; and "I Say Chanukah (You Say Hanukkah!)," a quirky steel drum, island-style number.

Mama Doni’s recordings are available nationwide, as CDs and digital downloads, from Barnes and Noble, Amazon, FYE.com, iTunes, and select Costco locations. Projects currently in production include a Mama Doni book, DVD, and new CD. A TV pilot is also in the works!

My take: I was introduced to Mama Doni back when I reviewed her CD Shabbat  Shaboom.  You may recall how impressed I was then so I asked if I could take a listen to her new CD, "Chanukah Fever."  Well, let me tell you, I was BLOWN away.  I found myself laughing out loud to some of the lyrics - and left me KICKING myself for missing her concert when she was here locally recently. "Funky Cold Medina" has nothin' on "The Funky Gold Menorah."  And forget "Livin' la Vida Loca"  (no offense to the delightful Ricky Martin) because "La Vida Dreidel" will be your new theme song as you tap your feet along to the music.  The song that made me laugh outloud?  "I Say Chanukah (You Say Hanukah)" - Mama Doni really nails that Yiddish "ch" sound.  I could go on and on, but suffice to say, this is a delightful CD, Jewish or not, Holiday season or not.  But, if I could drop a hint, Hanukkah DOES begin on the 21st and this WOULD make a delightful present....

Olivia and the Christmas Present
Written by Farrah McDoogle
Illustrated by Jane L. Johnson
ISBN: 9781442436244
Simon Spotlight ▪ 10/4/11 ▪ $9.99 ▪ Ages 3-7

Olivia has the best present for Ian and she can’t wait to surprise him with it on Christmas morning. But Ian likes peeking at his presents so Olivia must find the perfect hiding place. After all, being surprised on Christmas morning is the best part of Christmas! Come along with Olivia as she gets a surprise of her own.

My take:  Christmas and Hanukkah are definitely the time of year for surprises.  And when our family opened our shed to take out our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving, we received a very UNPLEASANT surprise.  For what did we behold, but a nest of full grown RATS who had taken up residence in the box of Christmas books (over 100) and in our Christmas tree.  We lost all but 5 of our Christmas books (that were packed in other boxes), our Christmas tree (the bag was chewed through), and a few years of my life when the rats jumped out at me!  My daughter was particularly distraught as she had plans for me to read every single book in that box to her so we could put them on her book log (when she has so many books on her log she gets to visit the principal - still a treat at this age - and he gives them pencils and candy).  What's a mom to do?  Turn to Simon and Schuster!  Luckily, they had just send me these four books above and so my daughter and I got started reading them right away.  Her favorite was Olivia and the Christmas Present because of the "surprise" Olivia got on Christmas morning; my favorite was The 12 Bugs of Christmas - I found myself singing the words to my daughter instead of reading (to the tune of The 12 DAYS of Christmas of course!) and we both collapsed in laughter.  Olivia and the Christmas Party is actually a coloring book with stickers but there is a story you can read along with on the bottom of the pages.  And The Magical Christmas Horse is truly a heart warming tale of a brother's love.  All four books are treasures to hold for years to come.  Thank you Simon and Schuster for starting our new Christmas book collection!

From the studio: This November, parents and their preschoolers are invited to blast off with Mickey and pals on a rocketship full of fun in Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s newest release of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure, a new, full-length intergalactic adventure that takes the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse gang – Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Daisy – into outer space on a search for the ultimate space treasure. Packaged with a surprise, never-before-seen “Goofy’s Thinking Cap” episode and fun, glow-in-the-dark space-themed stickers, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure will be available for purchase as a 2-Disc (DVD + Digital Copy) Combo Pack November 8, 2011.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure is a 45 minute, full-length space-themed escapade, geared for kids 2 to 5 years of age, that invites young viewers to discover outer space and use their problem-solving skills while they watch. In this specific adventure, Mickey and pals head to space where they tour the Moon, Mars and the Rings of Saturn as well as meet new alien friends while on the hunt for a unique space treasure. This exciting release will be available for purchase as a 2-Disc (DVD + Digital Copy) Combo Pack (the ultimate “2-for-1” value) for the suggested retail price of $19.99 U.S./$24.99 Canada. It’s an out-of-this-world package the kids won’t want to miss!

Synopsis: It’s Adventure Day and Professor Von Drake is sending Mickey and pals into the far reaches of outer space. The team blasts off in their Clubhouse Rocket in search of Treasure Stars that will point the way to the Out-of-this-World Treasure, their ultimate goal. The interplanetary trip takes preschool viewers first to the Moon, Mars and the Rings of Saturn. Along the way, the gang gets help from friendly space aliens Moon Men Chip and Dale, Martian Mickey and Pluto from Pluto but they also encounter sneaky Space Pirate Pete, who wants the Treasure all for himself. Eventually the Clubhouse Rocket’s crew and Space Pirate Pete manage to become friends, and they all follow the trail of the Treasure Stars to the mysterious Planet Mickey where they discover the location of the Out-of-this-World Treasure. It turns out to be a futuristic, space age version of the Clubhouse -- the perfect meeting place for all pals across the universe!

My take:  "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse:  Space Adventures" is the latest from the Clubhouse DVD franchise.  It's as solid addition to the series that my 7 year old, while way beyond her preschool years, still enjoys.  As usual, problem solving with "Toodles" is included on the adventure as Mickey and the gang search for the "Out-of-this-World Treasure."  When asked what her favorite part was, my daughter said: "I liked it when they found the treasure on the mystery planet because when they pressed the remote button, it turned into a big house and their moon and mars friends came to play." The included glow-in-the-dark space-themed stickers were a big hit as well for my sticker loving girl.  If you have a Mickey Mouse fan in your house, this would be a perfect stocking stuffer or Hanukkah gift.

The DVD features four episodes from the PBS Kids Sprout series: On Frozen Pond, Best in Snow, Icing Escapades and Getting to Snow You.

Available now at a retailer near you or at www.ncircleentertainment.com

My take:  Two of the DVDs sent to us were all new to my daughter (and to me):  Chloe's Closet (a UK preschool series) and The Fairies (from Australia).  We are very familiar with Word World, The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! (we have a lot of these books too) and of course, the Wiggles.  Now the Wiggles DVD, I confess we didn't even watch - my 7 year old refused - she and her brother were big fans of the Wiggles when they were in preschool (we even went to suffered through two live concerts) but neither likes them now.  So I mailed the DVD off to a great friend whose two year old loves them (Thanks NCircle - I think you made that little girl's Christmas!)  My favorite of these five was Chloe's Closet.  This adorable little girl is able to go anywhere and have any adventure by dressing up (her dress up clothes are in her special closet) and it transports her and her friends to wherever their clothing takes them (ice skating, sledding, etc.).  I didn't really care for The Fairies as the dressed up adults in heavy makeup and funky costumes was kind of creepy to me but my 7 year old enjoyed it - she watched it two times already. Of course, the ever dependable Word World and Cat in the Hat were enjoyed by all of us.  I've loved Cat in the Hat since I was 5 years old and this new rendition of him stays true to Dr. Seuss.  Word World is still a delightful way to help your child learn to read.  All in all, this is a great collection of winter shows that would be perfect in your child's stocking this year, or as a Hanukkah gift!

The giveaway:  One lucky winner will win his/her very own copies of all five of these DVDs (a $49.95 value)!

To win: Leave me a comment telling me the name of an upcoming release from NCircle Entertainment. Be sure to leave your email address with your comment if you are not a blogger or your email is not easily found on your blog. Elf Magic

From the KidStuff PR: To get ready for their most exciting time of year, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Santa’s Elf Magic Elves are going back-to-yule shopping.

This year, the trend-setting Elves will be happy to find that their clothing selection is greater than ever as they choose from casual, sporty, fashionable or dressy new Elfits.

The Elf Magic Elves can wear their new Elfits during their annual trips from the North Pole. The magical Elves spend time with children each year after Thanksgiving to celebrate the Christmas holiday season and return with Santa to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to help deliver presents. While they’re visiting their good friends “down south” they sometimes embark on mysterious adventures (called Elfcapades®) while everyone is asleep. When the children awake in the morning, they’re amazed and shocked to find out what their BEFF (Best Elf Friend Forever) has been up to all night! The Elf Magic Elves become a part of the family while they’re visiting, and children anxiously await their Elf’s arrival each year.

The annual Elf Magic Tradition begins when a child writes a letter to Santa requesting that their Elf come for a visit. Then, one day between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, their good friend magically arrives. From the time the Elf arrives until Christmas Eve (Santa picks up each Elf to help him deliver presents), the Elves truly become part of the family. They tag along on family excursions, go to school, help with chores, and will occasionally embark on silly adventures, known as Elfcapades™, at nighttime. When children awake in the morning, they’re often excited and mystified to see what their magical Elf has been up to! For families who want to join the Elf Magic tradition, children have only to write Santa to ask if he can send a new Elf friend to the child’s home.

The goal of a visiting Elf Magic Elf is to spread joy, love, and kindness and also to ignite the Christmas spirit and reinforce the true meaning of Christmas. Children form a strong bond with their magical friend, and look forward to their Elf’s return each year. Elves have even been known to pop into homes at times throughout the year to help celebrate milestones like a child’s birthday, first day of school or help with an Easter egg hunt!

My take:  Last year, Santa brought my little girl her very own elf right after Thanksgiving.  You can go to that post to read all about the basics that "Adriana" brought with her that year (a Sweet Dreams Flannel nightgown

Her own SnowCase™

and the book Elf Magic, The Story of a Timeless Christmas Tradition© Book/DVD Combo Set (which unfortunately, we just discovered was ruined during this past year by a nest of rats who ate the book for breakfast in our shed!)

Adrianna also came with her very own passport which we personalized:

This year, my 7 year old has been on pins and needles for the last month waiting for Thanksgiving Eve and the arrival of Adriana the Elf.   For the first time all year, she got out of bed willingly the day of Thanksgiving just to see if the elf had arrived.  And she was here!!  With an all new outfit!!

Brrrr! Let it snow, let it snow! This 3-piece Elfit® is a wintry essential. The 10-inch Elf Magic Girl™ will be ready for the wintry weather while rushing all around the North Pole. Whether she is at the workshop, school or Post Office, she will be warm and stylish in this coat, hat and boots from the Forever Elf Fashion® Collection. The coat was launched at the New Year's Eve "Snow Ball" dance paired with the Snowy Night Princess Ball Gown. They have now been made available for all of the Elves to wear! This Elfit includes:

Red coat edged with white fluffy faux fur, accented at the waist with a red satin bow and frosted with two Elf Magic snowflakes
A cozy pair of white suede boots trimmed with white fluffy faux fur
Red hat trimmed with white fluffy faux fur and topped with a snowball pompom

A Velcro closure at the waist of the coat, 2" Velcro closure on the boots and 2" Velcro closure on the hat makes changing the Elfit easy
Made with soft poly/cotton blend fabrics

I cannot even begin to describe her joy, so I'll let you tell you herself.  Stay tuned for more posts on the "mischief" Adriana gets up to in the days leading up to Christmas.

The Muppets

Directed by James Bobin
Produced by David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman
Written by Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller
Starring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones
Music by Christophe Beck
Cinematography Don Burgess
Editing by James M. Thomas
Distributed by Walt Disney Pictures
Release date November 23, 2011
Running time 98 minutes

About the movie:  The Muppets is the first Muppets theatrical release in 12 years, as well as the first Disney-produced Muppets film since 1996's Muppet Treasure Island. The film features six new musical numbers and three classic Muppet songs which are "The Muppet Show Theme", "Rainbow Connection" and "Mah Nà Mah Nà."

On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world's biggest Muppet fan (also a Muppet himself), his brother Gary and his brother's girlfriend Mary, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze Muppet Theater and drill for oil!  To save the theatre, Walter, Gary and Mary have to track down the Muppets to stage a telethon (they need $10 million to save the theatre).

The cast:

Jason Segel as Gary
Amy Adams as Mary
Chris Cooper as Tex Richman
Rashida Jones as Veronica Martin
Alan Arkin as a tour guide
Jack Black as himself
Emily Blunt as Miss Piggy's receptionist
Bill Cobbs as Grandfather
Zach Galifianakis as Hobo Joe
Donald Glover as a Junior CDE executive

The cameos:

James Carville
Leslie Feist as herself
Whoopi Goldberg as herself
Selena Gomez as herself
Katy Perry as herself
Dave Grohl as Animool
Zach Galifianakis as "Hobo Joe"
Neil Patrick Harris as himself
Judd Hirsch as himself
John Krasinski as himself
Jim Parsons as Walter's human form
Rico Rodriguez as himself
Mickey Rooney as a Smalltown USA resident
Kristen Schaal as an Anger Management group moderator
Sarah Silverman as a greeter

My take:  This movie might have been described as "the most cameos ever in a movie."  It seemed like there was yet another cameo around every corner of the script, which only added to the delightfulness of the return of our beloved Muppets to the theatre.   Now, many of you know I was not allowed to watch T.V. growing up, but even I know who the Muppets are.  Miss Piggy, Kermit, Gonzo, Rowlf the Dog, The Swedish Chef, Fozzie the Bear and so many more are beloved parts of my childhood.  And now I was able to introduce them to my own daughter when Disney sent me and her good friend (with his mom) to watch the movie before it came out.

Hard to believe, but Jason Segel (of some definitely R rated movies) has written a touching and believable movie about getting the whole gang back together again. Some of the funniest scenes were finding where they had all ended up: Fozzie Bear was performing with a group of Muppet impersonators, the Moopets, in Reno, Nevada; Gonzo was become a powerful plumbing magnate; Animal was in a celebrity anger-management clinic (with his anger sponsor - Jack Black!); and Miss Piggy was in Paris working for Vogue magazine as the plus size editor.  They all go back to the Muppets Theatre to run a telethon to save it. Hilarity ensues and of course, many new Muppets songs (it is a musical after all).  My daughter's favorite part was Kermit's "Rainbow Connection" (my all time favorite Muppets song).  This is a movie you will want to see again and again, and have a blast sharing your favorite Muppets with a new generation.

This post was written for Walt Disney Studios and Allied-THA [Allied Integrated Marketing (Allied) and Terry Hines and Associates (THA)] PR. I was not compensated in any way except for a complimentary preview viewing of the movie (4 seats).

My take:  Last year, we were lucky enough to review Jada Toys Battle Machines R/C vehicles and so I was tickled when they asked us to take a look at the all new LASER COMBAT toy.   I'll be honest with you - my son hasn't seen this yet as it's going to go under our Christmas tree this year for him.  But I have taken a look at it and I know he is going to be in seventh heaven.  Like the cars from last year, this helicopter is easy to control and durable - it truly takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.  The machine gun sound effects are pretty realistic and like the cars, it only takes 3 "hits" to win the game.  I can foresee some great dad/son bonding on Christmas day!  Watch the video below to see the game in action for yourself.

The Littlest Angel (giveaway)

THE CLASSIC CHILDREN’S STORY REIMAGINED!

from Anchor Bay Entertainment

November 15, 2011
Run Time: 83 minutes
Rating: G
List Price:  $19.98
Actors: Ron Perlman
Directors: Dave Kim
Format: Animated, Color, DVD, NTSC, Widescreen
Language: English

From the PR Firm: Some Angels soar the skies, and some fall a little short. A colorful adaptation of the fifteenth best-selling children’s book of all time, The Littlest Angel takes us on a rousing adventure with a young, and sometimes mischievous, Angel, who must return to earth and earn his wings, a task that doesn’t prove to be easy. Experience the love, laughter and magic of one of the most popular children’s stories of all time. From the classic book by Charles Tazewell, comes this lively CGI animated version filled with both humor and heart.

The Littlest Angel tells the story of a young boy who arrives in heaven before his time. Home-sick and lonely, he will travel back to earth, with his friendly pup Halo, to retrieve a most selfless and precious gift for The Baby Jesus. First released in book form in 1946, The Littlest Angel became popular for its ornate words and phrases paired with beautifully muted oil paintings. Tazewell’s book was adapted into a TV musical in 1969 starring Johnny Whitaker, and theatrical versions continue to be done by schools and church groups today.

It’s a modern twist on the timeless tale of an Angel that discovers the greatest gifts in life are faith, friendship and doing the right thing. This new version of The Littlest Angel features wonderful animation and great vocal talent, including Ron Perlman (“Beauty and The Beast,” Tangled), and is sure to become a holiday favorite, much like the book it’s based on. The Littlest Angel is a motion picture that will put a smile on everyone’s face, and what better gift is there than that.

For more information about The Littlest Angel go to www.thelittlestangelmovie.com

My take:  It's no accident that Anchor Bay is releasing this video now, during the Holiday season.  What better time to present such a timeless tale of selfless love for the Christ child, than during this most holy time?  I have only the vaguest of memories of this book so I was delighted to receive the DVD to view with my children.  My 9 year old boy was not interested and didn't even watch it. My 7 year old girl though was captivated.  So much so, she watched it three times in a row!  I wasn't realized surprised that she would like the story though as she has the kindest of hearts that I know (in adults and in children).  A story of another child learning to do the right thing was right up her alley.  And mine too, if you really want to know.  It was refreshing to review an animated movie that is age appropriate without all the violence that are with so many "cartoons" these days.  "The Littlest Angel" will go on our regular viewing rotation, during the holidays and not.  Read below to see how you can win a copy for yourself and watch the video for a glimpse into the special world of "The Littlest Angel" and his friends.

Billy Joel - Piano Man (Legacy Edition) (CD review and giveaway)

From the P/R firm: It’s hard to believe, but it’s been forty years since Billy Joel began his recording career. With songs like “Piano Man”, “She’s Always A Woman”, “My Life”, “Keeping The Faith”, “Only The Good Die Young”, and many, many, more, Billy has touched most of our lives in some way, and Sony Music / Legacy Recordings is commemorating those years with two very special releases, Piano Man (Legacy Edition) and Billy Joel - The Complete Albums Collection, both to be released on November 8.

Columbia/Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, is commemorating forty years of Billy Joel's career as a solo recording artist with a pair of historic releases--a limited edition Billy Joel - The Complete Albums Collection boxed set and a two-disc Legacy Edition of 1973's Piano Man album (exclusively featuring a long-lost fabled radio concert from 1972)--each appealing to aficionados of the iconic American singer-songwriter-performer.

Billy Joel - The Complete Albums Collection brings together for the first time, in one elegantly designed box, the artist's complete catalog of 14 essential titles, from 1971's Cold Spring Harbor through 1979's Grammy-winning Album of The Year 52nd Street and 1981's live Songs In The Attic to 2001's Fantasies & Delusions, the first album of Billy's classical compositions. Each album has been recently remastered in 24 bit audio for this edition and comes in cardboard jackets replicating the original album covers and sleeves.  Random copies of The Complete Albums Collection ordered through the Official Billy Joel store (www.CompleteBillyJoel.com) will be autographed by Billy Joel, so big fans will want to be sure to order their copy there.

The forthcoming Legacy Edition of Piano Man, Billy Joel's 1973 debut album on Columbia Records, includes the 10-song original album in its entirety, remastered for this release in addition to a second disc premiering the first-ever release of Billy's mythic performance at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio on April 15, 1972 (a year prior to his signing with Columbia). Philadelphia Daily News music writer Jon Takiff, an eye-witness to the event, has penned a new essay on the Sigma Sound show for the Legacy Edition of Piano Man.

The release and failure of a flawed Cold Spring Harbor, his first solo album, on an indie label in 1971 prompted then-struggling musician Billy Joel to go to Los Angeles and cut-his-chops incognito in local piano bars as Bill Martin (chronicled in Piano Man's title track). Unbeknown to Billy, WMMR, a top-rated Philadelphia FM station, had begun spinning "Captain Jack," a live track from a Billy Joel show they'd recorded at Sigma Sound, and the station's phones were going off-the-hook. The "Captain Jack" live recording was turning into a bonafide underground FM anthem, opening the door for a New York audition, competing major label interest, and a Columbia Records contract for the song's author and performer.

"Columbia was Bob Dylan's label," Billy said. "That was the deciding factor. At this time, you were allowed to build your career through FM radio, album tracks, concerts, singles and Bob Dylan was iconic for not being a hit singles type of artist. This was a company that knows how to build a career with an artist, so we decided to go with Columbia.

"I never sat down and said I'm gonna write a hit record. I wouldn't know a hit record if it bit me. I just wrote songs. I wrote them for me, I wrote them for the band, or I wrote a song for the women in my life. I was just writing songs for me. It's music that I wanted to hear. If I didn't hear certain kind of music on the radio, I realized, 'Well, if I write and record this it'll probably be on the radio and that's what I'll hear.' That's what I was thinking. Not so much about having hits, but about making music that I liked. I only really ever did it for me. That may sound selfish, but I'm the only person that I really know all that well."

The Legacy Edition of Piano Man makes available, for the first time ever, Billy's full performance at Sigma Sound, re-mixed from the original studio recording. The concert includes three Billy Joel songs--"Long, Long Time," "Josephine," and "Rosalinda"--which do not appear on any other albums by the artist and, of course, the performance of "Captain Jack" which launched one of the most remarkable careers in show business. The legendary Sigma Sound performance is available exclusively on the new Legacy Edition of Piano Man (and is not included on The Complete Albums Collection).

My take: I received a copy of one of these new CDs - the Legacy Edition of Piano Man.  If you are like me, you may not have ever heard Billy Joel from his very early years, which are reflected on this 2-CD set. The first CD in the set is an all new digitally remastered "Piano Man" CD and the second CD is a never-before-released Sigma Sound Studio recording from April 1972.  The set includes a nice booklet telling the tale of how Billy Joel's career was started during these years.  Forget everything you've ever heard from Billy Joel and prepared to be wowed by this amazing set.  I know I was.  This was Billy Joel as I had never heard him.  The Sound Studio recording includes the interplay dialogue between Billy and his producers and also includes several songs not on the "Piano Man" CD (see below for a listing). Both showcase a star on the rise and offer a glimpse of the singer he becomes.  If you are a Billy Joel aficionado, this release is a must have for you.

Cars 2 (review)

Release Date: November 1, 2011
Feature Run Time: 106 minutes
Rating: U.S.: G/Canadian: G (Bonus Material Not Rated)

Film Synopsis: Star racecar Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell. Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Disney•Pixar’s fast-action summer hit “Cars 2” comes home on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D, Movie Download and DVD -- November 1, 2011. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pixar Animation Studios, the high octane in-home release invites families and fans of all ages to come along on a journey around the world with the #1 animated film of the year and introduces an exclusive all-new animated short “Air Mater,” featuring the fan favorite character spinning his tales in an exciting adventure high above Radiator Springs. The must-own animated release also includes fascinating commentary from award-winning director John Lasseter and “Hawaiian Vacation,” the delightful animated short that accompanied the film in theatres.

The immersive “Cars 2” bonus features include an one-of-a-kind interactive “World Tour” map that takes viewers through nine different locations, including those featured in the film and more. A global thrill-ride, it allows viewers to go behind-the-scenes with the Pixar artists and filmmakers as they circle the globe finding inspiration for the most international of all Pixar films to date. “Cars 2” is also the first Pixar film to be released in spectacular Blu-ray 3D.

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, returns to the driver’s seat as director. “Cars 2” is produced by visual effects industry veteran Denise Ream (associate producer, “Up”; visual effects executive producer, “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith”). Oscar®-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“The Incredibles,” “Up”) provides the electrifying score with a surf-rock-meets-spy-thriller flavor and a variety of global accents, evoking a sense of thrills, mystery and emotion. Brad Paisley, Robbie Williams, Weezer, French singer Bénabar and Japanese girl band Perfume lend their diverse musical talents to the film’s soundtrack.

Film Clip:

The film features an all-star vocal cast including Owen Wilson who reprises his role as hotshot racecar Lightning McQueen. Larry the Cable Guy provides the voice of Mater (proprietor of Tow Mater Towing and Salvage), Lightning McQueen’s best friend and the heart and soul of Radiator Springs. Bonnie Hunt is back as Sally, the baby-blue Porsche 911 Carrera whose motor races for Lightning. Acclaimed actor Michael Caine makes his Pixar debut as Finn McMissile, a top British spy who mistakes Mater for an undercover American agent with a genius disguise. Emily Mortimer brings charm, cleverness and cachet as Holley Shiftwell, a rookie field spy who knows every trick in the manual. Versatile actor John Turturro gives a free-wheeling performance as Francesco Bernoulli, the world-renowned Italian racing champ who is Lightning’s chief rival. Tony Shalhoub, Joe Mantegna, Peter Jacobson, Jason Isaacs, Eddie Izzard, Paul Dooley, Cheech Marin, John Ratzenberger, Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave also lend their vocal talents. Real-life Formula 1 racing champ Lewis Hamilton and NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon add a touch of authenticity with their cameos in the film.

My take: In this sequel to the Pixar hit film "Cars," Lightning McQueen is no longer the central character - here, the main screen time belongs to his best friend Mater. And frankly, that's a mistake in my humble opinion.  The slap-stick character of Mater was fun as Lightning's sidekick but giving him his own film (so to speak) would be like having a whole series about Robin instead of Batman.  It just doesn't make sense.  Visually, the movie is very cool - no surprise there - Pixar is the best of the best for animated film (the inside of the Tower of London is awesome!)  But the plot is so thin, you could drive a car through it (pun intended).  Sort of like a poorly made James Bond flick, Cars 2 doesn't have the "human" connection that so defined the first Cars movie; there is not one character I can connect with or care about from the film.  My 7 and 9 year olds both enjoyed the movie but it's interesting to note that neither has asked to watch it again.  I'd only give it 3 out of 5 stars.
