Corporate Birthday Greeting Cards

Baby Birth Announcements and Birth Announcements

My take:  As far back as I can remember, I was a card sender.  You have a birthday, an anniversary, a special day, I was guaranteed to send you a card.  Alas, the older I got, the busier I've gotten, the more I've sent my greetings these days via Facebook, email or text.  I really want to get back to sending cards via snail mail but who has the time?  Well, Cards Direct does - let them do the shopping and printing for you.  They have a seemingly endless supply of every kind of card you can imagine, in plain or they can customize for you.  I was given a $20 gift code so I purchased the Red Circles Happy Birthday Cards you see below.  10 cards with 10 gold lined envelopes (blank, no personalization) cost $23 (so I was out of pocket $3 for this review).   It took about a week to get them in the mail but now I have a small stash of cards for those birthday parties my kids seem to be invited to on a weekly basis (and I am ALWAYS caught of guard the day of the party without a card to send).  If you are in business (for yourself or you work for a company), these would be great to have on hand - thank you cards, holiday cards and the like for your clients (preprinted with your logo and/or a photo of your staff of course!).  Really, I cannot think of any occasion Cards Direct hasn't thought of.  File this one under "why didn't I think of that?"

Happy Nappers

Happy Nappers – What Are Happy Nappers?

From the company:  You may be wondering, what exactly is a Happy Napper? Perhaps you have a child that has been asking about them or you have heard of them but have not yet seen the commercial on TV. Either way you have come to the right place for information on these pillow/stuffed animals.
Happy Nappers are soft, cute stuffed animals that can transform into a pillow that looks like its dwelling. This is done by reversing it so you either have the animal for playtime (for example a dragon) or it’s home as a pillow (the dragons castle). There are 6 different ones available at this time but as they are becoming very popular I would expect more to come in the near future.
Another cool little feature is when they are in house form they have a door bell you can ring before “waking up your friend”.  This seems like such a simple little thing but kids love it. They like the idea of ringing the bell to wake up their friend and start their play date together.
Happy Nappers are great because they can serve 2 purposes at once. They are a great stuffed animal and are about 21 inches tall. When reversed they turn into a comfortable pillow that not only works well on a bed but also for overnight trips. They are perfect for long car rides, plane trips and always a favorite at sleep overs. These really are so much more then your typical stuffed animal and kids are loving them.

My take:  The first time I heard about Happy Nappers was in March when my daughter was hospitalized for a week with pneumonia.  Their commercial came on quite a bit and my daughter was sold instantly.  She asked a LOT for a Happy Napper but she already owns two Pillow Pets (similar product) so I said no. Then in May I was able to attend the first ever Reviewers Retreat at the Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos and Happy Nappers was a sponsor!  They gave away several of their products but alas, I was not a winner :-(  When I went back to the hotel room without one, my daughter literally cried herself to sleep.  I tweeted about it and the company very graciously agreed to send us one for a product review!  I don't think she slept until the Puppy arrived (it was on back order too)!!  Then, miracles of miracles, I entered a Facebook contest to have Bella be their Happy Fan of the Month and we won!  A Ladybug Happy Napper soon followed and a very happy little girl named them PUP-PUP and BUG-BUG.

Let me tell you, she takes these animals everywhere.  She cannot take a step without them.  And what do I think about them?  Well, the conversion process is a snap - converting them from house to animal and back again.  The doorbell is a cute touch too.  I was examining the seams to check for quality and remarked to my husband:  These are well put together - well sewn - I do not see any gaping seems" and my daughter said immediately:  "Mom they are put together well so kids won't cry if they fall apart!"

Smart girl.

Check out these 6 cool designs.  You can get your own Happy Napper here for only $19.99 (and watch a video on how they work).  Get yours today and you'll soon have your very own Happy Napper Fan!

This post was written for Happy Nappers who provided the toys for review. I was not compensated in any way except for the complimentary toys (a USD $36.98 value).

The Seraph Seal (book review)

The Seraph Seal
by Leonard Sweet and Lori Wagner
  • Paperback: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Thomas Nelson (June 7, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • List Price: $15.99 USD
From the publisher: An epic tale of good and evil based on the four horsemen of the Apocalypse found in Revelation.
Using the four horsemen of the Apocalypse to symbolize the four Gospels, four transcendentals, and four forces of the universe (air, water, earth, and fire), Sweet and Wagner weave a fast-paced, end-times tale of good vs. evil and the promise of a new dawn for humanity.
Set in 2048, when planet Earth is suffering from the damaging effects of years of misuse and abuse, cultural history professor Paul Binder receives a mysterious letter that leads him to examine a lost 2nd-century Diatessaron manuscript. Ancient prophecies, cryptic letters, and strange events set him on a course to uncover the missing clues that could lead humanity into a new age. Layered with forgotten symbolism from the ancient, Jewish, and Christian traditions, the novel is a type of engaged fiction in which the main character's lost journal serves as a guide to the reader in interpreting clues and understanding the novel's conclusion.

My take:  Did you like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code? How about The Lost Symbol or Angels and Demons? If so, you might enjoy this novel.  The plot moves along in much the same way, mixing religion, a professor and a quest to save the world.  Of course, with the End Times so much in the news these days (with that nut predicting 12/21/2011 as his new date for the Apocalypse), this book is a good read for anyone interested in the topic.  The book begins with the birth of some significant people on that very date, 12/21/2011 but most of the book is set in the year 2048, where it appears the world has just about destroyed all that is good about society.  Famine is no longer rare as food sources are about gone (interestingly enough, used up as alternate fuel sources so now much of society is without Fuel OR Food).  Based losely on The Book of Revelations, with bits and pieces of other religious and scientific sources thrown in for flavor, The Seraph Seal is a wild ride as those significant people born on 12/21/2011 realize their destiny and try to save (and destroy) the world.  The story itself is a bit hard to follow - the chapters switch from character to character and you almost need a flow chart to keep track of who is who.  Some story lines are started and go nowhere, lending to the confusion.   I thought the ending was interesting, but not in line with what I believe will happen when Jesus comes again, but hey, it's called fiction for a reason.  The Seraph Seal was not a bad book but it's no great piece of literature either.  3 stars.

Here, Home, Hope (book review)

by Kaira Rouda
List Price $15.00
Paperback: 200 pages
Publisher: Greenleaf Book Group (May 1, 2011)
Language: English

From One2One Network: Here, Home, Hope by author Kaira Rouda is the fictional story of one woman's courageous journey through midlife crisis and personal reinvention - all told with a sense of heart and humor.
Kelly Mills Johnson becomes restless in her thirty-ninth year. An appetite for more forces her to take stock of her ordinary middle-American existence and her neighbors’ seemingly perfect lives. Her marriage to a successful attorney has settled into a comfortable routine, and being the mother of two adorable sons has been rewarding but exhausting. Meanwhile, Kelly’s own passions lie wasted. She eyes with envy the lives of her two best friends, Kathryn and Charlotte, both beautiful, successful businesswomen who seem to have it all. Kelly takes charge of her life, devising a midlife makeover plan.
Here, Home, Hope will surely appeal to readers of chick lit and other women’s fiction titles who are ready to transition into something new in their own life.

My take:  I really, really wanted to love this book.  The main character, Kelly, is 39 years old (I'm 40) and has two kids and what appears to be a great marriage.  The book details her "mid-life" crisis and how she and her friends make it through some very real problems.  Ultimately though, I just couldn't relate to Kelly or her friends.  She is a stay at home mom  (I've never been fortunate enough to have that kind of money to be able to stay home with my kids), she and her husband Patrick are wealthy (I can only dream....come on lottery!), she spends hundreds of dollars on her hair of all things (all I could think was how many groceries that money would buy) and she has two boys that her life revolves around (so much so that she is lost without them when they go to summer camp - me? I dream of summer camp - for me!).  The book is rife with adultery (nothing makes me angrier than unfaithful spouses) and even a parents who drop off their teenage daughter at Kelly's house without ever checking in on her (I don't know anyone that would be so irresponsible).

The story is entertaining and even inspiring though if you can get past all of that.  Kelly used yellow post-it notes all over her house and car with "T2C" (things to change) about her life and in the process, helps two of her friends (whose lives look perfect but are not at all perfect) make a few changes of their own.   It's a good reminder that things aren't always what they seem and the "perfect" people in our lives probably don't have it as "perfect" as we think.  And I like her message of it never being to late to reinvent yourself; no matter your age, life is ready to be lived, with hope!

Cooperative Games By Peaceable Kingdom

NEW GAMES INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT OF ‘WE’

Toy Stores Now Stocking Five Cooperative Games By Peaceable Kingdom From ‘Count Your Chickens’ and ‘Hoot Owl Hoot’ To ‘Mermaid Island’

From KidStuff PR:  Typical games, from checkers to cards, manage to have one player win and everyone else lose. What’s the fun in that? Sharing, giggling and cooperating (plus no hurt feelings) are the wonderful concepts behind Peaceable Kingdom’s rollout of five delightful board games where team effort is the bottom line, not winning or losing – a life lesson that will carry youngsters into adulthood.

With appealing names like Count Your Chickens and Hoot Owl Hoot, kids quickly learn to play against a common obstacle – like the fox in the hen house – instead of a playmate. No longer will sensitive children be reduced to tears after losing a board game. Playing cooperative games allows youngsters to work as a team: sharing, strategizing and building healthy relationships. The bonus comes if the whole team wins. If they lose, the defeat is shared amongst the players. And then they’ll shout, “let’s play again!”

“At Peaceable Kingdom, we’re not educators or therapists,” says company President Donna Jaffe, “we are moms and aunties, caregivers and game players. We created these particular games because we believe games are a wonderful way to teach and we want the kids in our lives to learn that working and playing together can be empowering and fun!

One mom who has played the games and happens to be a school psychologist heartily agrees. “The games’ ability to stimulate compassion in kids,” explains Dr. Leslie Striar, a mom of three, “is one of their best assets. In a cooperative game, when one player has a small defeat the others feel empathy. When you are all in it together, compassion comes naturally.”

Creating a habit like cooperating, especially among children, takes practice. Preschoolers immersed in helping Mother Hen find her baby chicks in Count Your Chickens or aiding the stranded mermaids before the Sea Witch finds them in Mermaid Island help them internalize a habit of cooperation. The positive lessons of any one of these games makes cooperating second nature! Best of all, they can be played in 10 to 20 minutes, perfect for the youngest members of the family.

Peaceable Kingdom, makers of award-winning children’s games, stickers and activities since 1983, takes cooperation one-step further by manufacturing their cooperative games using soy-based inks on FSC paper. Game parts are made with corn-based plastic. The 100% green ingredients are the company’s way of co-operating with the planet.

Available now online at www.peaceablekingdom.com and at specialty stores and online boutiques, the
five new board games allow children to play with respect and compassion and of course, have fun! Three of them were invented by award-winning, professional game inventors and the other two were developed by the company’s in-house product developers. A plus for parents and gift-givers -- each of the cooperative games offers learning skills like counting, taking turns, color recognition, linear thinking, problem solving, memory and shared decision making.

My take:  We were sent this game, Stone Soup, to try out:

Stone Soup™ • Ages 5+ • $14.99

From the classic tale of cooperation comes this
simple game where players work together to
“cook” a soup by making matches of ingredients.
Match all of the ingredients before the fire under
the kettle goes out and everyone wins! Peaceable
Kingdom adds a twist to the game – one magic
stone card can turn any Fire Out card face down
again on the board. Players decide together when
to use the magic stone card to help keep the soup cooking! Ideal for up to 6 players. This memory game takes about 15 minutes to play.

Now let me be the first to tell you that my 8 and 6 year old will fight over ANYTHING.  If my daughter says the sky is blue, my son will argue it is white.  Just because he can.  This almost constant bickering gets on my very last nerve (raise your hand if you know EXACTLY what I am talking about).  Now that every last reader I have, now has their hand in the air, let me tell you that even while setting up this COOPERATIVE game, my two managed to fight (over who got to set up the tiles - see my daughter's scowl below??)  I wasn't sure how well this was going to work AT ALL.

Luckily, they got into the spirit of the game right away (here is my son with the lucky Magic Stone).  Not only did they work TOGETHER to get the soup done before the fire went out, they actually encouraged each other when a match wasn't made or a fire out card was uncovered.  I was astonished.  We played it over and over and had a blast working together.

After that, alas, it was back to Harry Potter Uno and many cheers and tears along with the winners and losers.  I'm thinking I need to get more of these Cooperative Games, ASAP!

Peaceable Kingdom happily points out that other manufacturers such as HABA and Family Pastimes offer cooperative games. Now fear of losing, tears and bad feelings can be eliminated when setting up the board game.

To order online, see other products or see a video of children playing cooperatively, visit their website,

ABOUT PEACEABLE KINGDOM: Peaceable Kingdom was founded in 1983 with a single product – a children’s poster based on the artwork from the classic children’s book Goodnight Moon (printed by the son of the book’s illustrator). Twenty-eight years and more than 5,000 SKUs later, the company has grown to be a leader in juvenile stickers Peaceable Kingdom’s mission is to make good, do good, and be good. Which means: to create fresh, fun, award-winning products that educate, inspire, and tickle funny bones, to donate to charitable organizations that support the well-being of children, to remain committed to socially-conscious manufacturing practices and sustainable and eco-friendly materials, to maintain integrity in all business relationships and to support the people who support us! Recess Monkey: Flying! (CD music review and giveaway)

IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A PLANE, IT’S …

‘FLYING!’with RECESS MONKEY
NEW CD TO BE RELEASED JUNE 21

$14.99
for ages 3 – 8
run time 47 minutes
Release date: June 21, 2011

From the PR FirmFor those who understand how a gravity-defying leap from the couch is mightily enhanced by wearing a bed sheet cape, celebrated independent children’s recording group Recess Monkey offers a superhero-inspired collection of music on their seventh studio CD, FLYING!

Superheroes usually populate a world of make-believe, but most of the songs on FLYING! are firmly grounded in the everyday, real-life experiences of Recess Monkey as teachers, parents, and (former) kids and graced with the knowledge that an ordinary person can, indeed, transform into a superhero. Think Wonder Woman re-imagined as a five-year-old playground dynamo covered in band-aids, Superman as a “Superkid” who bravely tells the truth and stands up for what's right, or a tribute to one of the greatest superheroes of all time: Grandma!

Kids’ music authority Stefan Shepherd (Zooglobble) has declared, ““Dan Zanes may be the godfather; They Might Be Giants, the legitimizer; and Laurie Berkner, Ralph Covert, and Justin Roberts the genre’s superstars. But Recess Monkey is the heart of kids’ music today.”

“Kindie” music favorites Chris Ballew/Caspar Babypants, Molly Ledford (Lunch Money), Justin Lansing (The Okee Dokee Brothers), Dean Jones (Dog on Fleas), Johnny Bregar, Tom Baisden (The Not-Its!) and Chris Wiser (Sugar Free Allstars) play superhero on FLYING! The album’s producer, Tor Hyams, launches flights of keyboard fancy on several tracks, and children’s author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka (Lunch Lady, Punk Farm) contributes FLYING’s stunning interior comic strip artwork, showing the world just how Recess Monkey became superheroes.

The three members of Recess Monkey are teachers who met while working at the same Seattle school and shared a genuine enthusiasm for a grad school project that morphed into their 2005 debut release Welcome to Recess Monkey Town. This was followed by another popular (and zoologically correct) hit, Aminal House. The teachers — Jack Forman, Daron Henry, and Drew Holloway — made history with their next release, Wonderstuff, the first double CD children’s album produced from material generated at a kids’ summer camp workshop. Likewise, 2008’s Tabby Road, 2009’s Field Trip, and 2010’s The Final Funktier each came from real life children’s experiences.

From a plethora of remarkable Seattle-based “kindie” musicians, Seattle Magazine chose to honor Recess Monkey in 2010 with its “Best Local Kids’ Music” accolade. The band’s 2010 release, The Final Funktier, was highlighted on CBS-TV’s The Early Show and in People magazine. The Final Funktier was on “Best of 2010” lists by Amazon.com; Parents Magazine; The Washington Post; Time Out NY Kids; Kidsmusic.About.com; Boston Children’s Music; Cool Mom Picks; Daily Candy Kids; MetroKids; MilwaukeeMoms.com; Minivan Blues; You Know, for Kids; Zooglobble; and more. The album was a KIWI magazine 2010 “holiday pick” and was featured in ParentsConnect’s holiday gift guide. Each of Recess Monkey’s previous albums has received similar acclaim.

My take: A year ago, I reviewed Recess Monkeys' The Final Funktier CD and you may recall how much we liked it.  So we were eager to hear the latest CD, "Flying!"  from this group of three teachers.  And after listening to this, Recess Monkeys' 7th CD, I have to say they have FUN down to a science.  As pre-K/K/1/2/3 grade teachers, it's pretty obvious these three men "get" the young set and what motivates them.  The music on "Flying!" is all about superheroes - both real (Grandmoms House) and imagined (Covered in Band-Aids).  And the music itself is fun to listen to - if you have to listen to "Kindie-Music," Recess Monkey is definitely not a painful option - I listened to "Flying" all by my ownself several times :-)  If you have to travel this summer, I recommend popping "Flying" into your CD player and hit the road - the time will fly by as you all sing along and dance in your seat to the infectious beat of "Flapjacks!" (I cannot be held responsible for any urge to stop at IHOP along the way!)

Save the Ta-Tas (giveaway)

Who We Are
ta-tas®Brand is committed to stopping cancer. That’s why we give a portion of every sale to end the disease. Every purchase counts because every purchase creates a donation.

The Save the Ta-tas Foundation is committed to fighting cancer at every stage—including education, prevention, research, community outreach, and emotional support for those struggling with the disease. Our first year goal is to donate no less than .90 cents per dollar to support new gene research through a partnership with The Concern Foundation. Innovative and new, our organization is determined, like its founder ta-tas®Brand Clothing, to end this devastating disease, with a smile of course! Laughter heals, save the ta-tas!

My take:  I can't believe it's been over 3 years since I first heard about Save The Ta-Tas and told ya'll all about them!  In all this time, they've been quietly taking over the retail world carrying on their mission of "Helping Create a World Without Cancer" (that's their founder Julia Fiske above) while creating all kinds of new products; t-shirts (for men and women), bumper stickers, bags, the infamous "boob-lube", magnets, etc., etc. And every product is designed to make you laugh - yes, I said LAUGH - in the face of cancer.  Now, I've been blessed not to have been diagnosed with cancer as of yet, but many good friends and family of mine have not been so lucky.  One woman I admire a great deal is right now fighting the good fight against breast cancer as we speak.  So I'm honored to share this company with you, so in some small way, I'm helping her fight back against cancer as well.

So, without further adieu, let me show you the two very cool shirts they mailed me to try out (in XXL no less (there's a reason I love this bumper magnet you know) - I was impressed with the range of the sizes they have available from Small to XXL.

save the ta-tas Garden - Tee - Royal Blue

So what are you waiting for?  Head on over to the shop and beef up your summer wardrobe today.  Thumb YOUR nose at cancer with laughter.  And these shirts would make excellent Father's Day gifts.  Just sayin'... what man WOULDN'T want a shirt that says "Save a Life, Grope Your Wife?"

The Giveaway:

Imagine a World Without Cancer - Tee - Black

in a size Large ($32.97)

Butterfly Bling save the ta-tas - V-Neck Tee - Black

To win: Go read a post or two (or 20!) on Julia's blog and come back here and tell me something you learned that you didn't know before. You can easily follow her blog via Google Friend Connect while you are there too.
