From the publisher: New from #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, a dark, fantastical story about this world . . . and the underworld.
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.
But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away... especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.
My take: I've been racking my brain, trying to remember if I had ever read any of Meg Cabot's books before, but to no avail. I simply cannot remember. But after reading Abandon, I know I'll be on the hunt for more of her work - especially the rest of this series. This book is marketed as Young Adult Fiction but it has appeal to such a broader audience, I'm reluctant to pigeon hole the work. Yes, the main character is a teenager. But the story is so much more. Basically a recast of the myth of Persephone, Abandon is the take of a young woman who died and came back to life, by her own choice. Medically, there were reasons she was resuscitated, but those weren't the real reasons she was able to return. And death, in the form of a Hades-type figure, wants her back. I think a lot of the negative reviews may stem from the fact that this is the first of a series of books...yes, many of the characters and plots are undeveloped...but I think that may be intentional on the part of the author as she holds back some to keep you coming back for the rest of the story. I for one, look forward to reading the rest of the tale.
