My take: Our family recently moved across town.  One of the toilets in the new house appears to have a bad habit of developing frequent rings (lime? hard water? not sure what) that requires constant cleaning.  Just what I needed, right? More of a job I already hate.  So when Family Review Network asked for reviewers of the new Scrubbing Bubbles® Automatic Toilet Bowl Cleaner I was all over it.  I asked my husband to set it up and within matter of minutes it was installed and ready to go (he attached it to the side of the toilet but you can set it on the floor too).  I purposely did not clean the toilet first to see how the cleaner would work.  Let me tell you, within a day, that bowl was clean (too bad it doesn't clean the rim too - those of you with boys know EXACTLY what I'm talking about)!  It works by squirting the cleaner 3x a day automatically (but you can manually squirt out the cleaner too).  I am sold on this product (even though it does make your toilet look like something out of a space shuttle to have it attached on the side).  I'll take a product that helps my work load over aesthetics any day (who says toilets are pretty anyway?).  Thanks Scrubbing Bubbles!  ♥ ★♥ ★

The giveaway: One lucky winner will win his/her own Scrubbing Bubbles® Automatic Toilet Bowl Cleaner (a $34.99 value!). (US addresses only per the sponsor please)

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Road Rally

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Road Rally

List Price: $26.99
Language: English
Subtitles: English, French
Number of discs: 1
Studio: Walt Disney Video
DVD Release Date: September 7, 2010
Run Time: 45 minutes

Product Description: Rev up the fun with "Road Racin' Mickey" and all your Clubhouse pals in a full-length adventure that’ll have you movin' and groovin' all the way to the finish line! Join the gang on a wild ride through Mickey Park, the desert, Mistletoe Mountain and the jungle! Along the way, you’ll help pick the right Mouseketools and find "Mickey Markers" that unlock special surprises. And, share the excitement when Toodles and Goofy team up to rescue "Piston Pete." There’s laughter and fast-paced fun around every corner in Mickey’s Road Rally!

From Disnology.com: On September 7th from 7-7:50pm ET/PT, the Disney Channel will be airing a new “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” special titled “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally.” On the same day that the special airs on the channel, fans will also be able to purchase the DVD from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Here is a description of the special: “In ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally,’ Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto, along with Clubhouse pals Toodles, Pete, Clarabelle Cow, and Chip and Dale embark on the first annual Clubhouse road rally. The friends selects their favorite mode of transportation, with Goofy getting the opportunity to ride in Professor Von Drake’s latest invention, the Clubhouse Rescue Truck. The race kicks into high gear, leading the gang on a journey through sandy desserts, snow-covered mountains and lush tropical jungles in search of clues. During the race, Toodles feels unappreciated when the Rescue Truck gets all the praise for helping out, and he sadly leaves the group just when he’s needed most. It is up to Mickey and pals to reunite the team and make it to the finish line.”  The special also features five new songs: “Rock and Ride and Rally” “It’s Fun to Go Ridin’”  “Mickey’s Marker Song” “Goofy’s Rescue Truck Tribute” “I’m a Friend, You’re a Friend”

My take: "M, I, C, K, E, Y....M, O, U, S, EEEEEE, Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mouse...and Donald Duck!" Now THAT is the Mickey Mouse Club song I remember from my youth.  These days, as you know, the kiddos have "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" and an all new toe-tapping theme song (which my daughter loves to sing).  The show is a big hit in our house so we were excited to get this copy of the new special "Road Rally" before it even hits the t.v. screen.   Let me tell you, I popped this movie into the DVD player and had a very nice 45 minutes to myself (alas, had to spend it on laundry and cleaning but I'll take what I can get).  At least I got to spend that time listening to the dulcet sounds of my daughter singing along to all the cool new music in the movie.  Of course, the underlying theme of teamwork appealed to me as well but I confess, I would let my kids watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse even without any educational value...I love that mouse!  ★★★

The New Explorers Club CD from the Flannery Brothers (review and giveaway)

The New Explorers Club (CD)
The Flannery Brothers
Flantastic! Productions
October 19, 2010
List price: $15
ages 2 - 8
Run Time: 45 minutes

From the PR Firm: Winners of thirteen prestigious awards, including the Lennon Award for Best Children’s Song in the 2008 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, the Flannery Brothers are known for their engaging, easy-going, “jam session in our living room” style of family music. With influences ranging from Jonathan Richman and The Beach Boys to Harry Nilsson and the Muppets, the band is dedicated to creating musical experiences that are honest, organic, fun, and respectful of kids and their families.

Responding to the overwhelming success of their first two albums, Love Songs for Silly Things and Move Over Lullabies … It’s Time for Wake Up Songs, the Flannery Brothers look ahead with great anticipation to the October 19 release of their third CD, The New Explorers Club. The New Explorers Club invites everyone in the family to go exploring. Filled with danceable, clappable, singable, family-friendly rock songs, The New Explorers Club enthusiastically encourages seeking adventure and viewing the world with a fresh perspective. While songs about submarine diving, kite flying, and pirates might be expected in this context, listeners may be surprised to hear a reggae number about lying down on the kitchen floor or an exciting boogie woogie tune about swallowing a bug!

You can visit the Flannery Brothers at http://flannerybrothers.com/

Track List:
  1. Big Kite
  2. Swallowed a Bug
  3. Hi 5 Dance
  4. In the Middle
  5. Pirate or Parrot?
  6. Green Submarine
  7. Sea Glass
  8. Quiet Place
  9. Kitchen Floor
  10. Boots
  11. Let's Go!
  12. The Elements
  13. Best Adventures
My take:  I read one description of the Flannery Brothers that called them "Kindie Rockers to look out for."  I can only assume "kindie" refers to "kids" and "indie artists" but irregardless of label, The Flannery Brothers are definitely ROCKERS to look out for.  The group consists of two real life brothers, Dan and Mike Flannery and one honorary brother Jonathan Merrifield and quite frankly, this album will rock your socks off.  My personal track favorite? "Pirate or Parrot?" which has been known to play on my van CD player even with nary a kid in site!  Probably because of the "boy factor" my son loves "Swallowed a Bug" the best.  Both kiddos agreed - The New Explorers Club is a must have for me to add onto their MP-3 players.  Watching them get up and move and groove to the music, I couldn't agree more (and I'm thinking I may have to pick up their first 2 CDS for Christmas {Love Songs for Silly Things and Move Over Lullabies....It's Time for Wake Up Songs}).

The giveaway: WIN IT BEFORE YOU CAN BUY IT!  One lucky winner will win his/her very own copy of the The New Explorers Club CD from the Flannery Brothers.

To win: Go to the Flannery Brothers on Facebook and come back here and tell me one of the band's interests. Be sure to leave your email address with your comment if you are not a blogger or your email is not easily found on your blog. This giveaway is open until 11:59 p.m., EST, Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Good Luck!

Fogless Shower Mirror (review and giveaway)

From the company: Finally a fogless mirror that actually remains clear in the shower – and sticks to the wall! Our patent-pending design is simple yet most effective. Fill the mirror’s reservoir with hot water from your shower head and you’re done. It's ideal for close shaves, cleansing and exfoliating, removing make-up, tweezing and more. No chemicals or special coatings required. Our shower mirror is designed to remain fogless and maintenance-free for a lifetime.

My take: We've never had a mirror in the shower, even though it would be very handy for me since I remove my make up in the shower and it would sure save time (and my sanity) if my husband could shave in the shower (our bathroom has one sink and one mirror).  Why have we never installed a mirror in the shower then?  Because what's the use when they just fog up anyway?!  Well, let me tell you, ToiletTree Products has come up with a Fogless Shower Mirror that really is fogless!  And considering how hot I like the shower to be (hot=fog), this truly is a miracle mirror.  It really works and it's easy too - I just fill up the reservoir behind the mirror with hot water and that's it!  I love that it swivels too (would be handy if you and your spouse were different heights) and comes with a self-stored squeegee, and is rust and shatter proof.  Installation was easy peasy - just need to allow 24 hours for the adhesive to dry before installing the mirror - and it installs on all kinds of surfaces.  I'm sold on Toilet Tree's Fogless Shower Mirror - a product that really does what it says it will.  Try it yourself or WIN IT (see below)!  ★★★★★

Money Back Guarantee: ToiletTree Products provides a 30 Day, no risk, unconditional 100% Money-Back Guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, simply return it within 30 days with a dated proof of purchase and we will gladly refund your money, in full, no strings attached.

About the company: ToiletTree Products Inc. is a private corporation based in Upper Nyack, NY, just minutes from New York City. The company began business in 2009 and has focused solely on the manufacturing and marketing of an assortment of bathroom products featuring its signature product, The Foglesss Shower Mirror. This company is family owned and operated.

The giveaway: One lucky winner will win his/her own Fogless Shower Mirror (List Price: $44.95)! (US and Canadian addresses only)

To win: Leave a comment here telling me one of the ToiletTree Products Tips that will make installation and use of your Fogless Shower Mirror a breeze (tip:  Look on the RETURNING CUSTOMERS tab).  Be sure to leave your email address with your comment if you are not a blogger or your email is not easily found on your blog. Back-to-School DINOSAUR TRAIN Merchandise (giveaway)

All-New Back-to-School DINOSAUR TRAIN Merchandise to Debut in August and September 2010

From the PR FirmSchool is right around the corner, and it’s time for parents to jump aboard the DINOSAUR TRAIN to celebrate “Get Ready for Kindergarten” month in August.

There are many things that can be done to help prepare children for kindergarten, including working with your child on basic academic skills such as writing his/her name and reading letters; teaching critical thinking skills by encouraging them to ask “Why” questions; working on arts-and-crafts projects to get your child more comfortable using scissors, markers and other supplies he/she will see plenty of in kindergarten; and making shopping for school supplies a fun experience by letting your child make some choices of their own, like the color of his/her backpack or pencil case.

At The Jim Henson Company, the immersive and compelling DINOSAUR TRAIN website at www.pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain offers parents (and teachers) a wealth of activities to encourage basic scientific thinking skills for pre-school children. Here are a few examples:

• Help your child practice the letters of the alphabet while learning about the diversity of dinosaurs that once lived on Earth with the “Dinosaurs A – Z song.” Basic supplies needed include 26 index cards (4x6 or 5x7), a thick marker, crayons, lyrics to "Dinosaurs A to Z" song and the Printable page of all 26 dinosaurs in the song. For instructions go to: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/handson/dinosaursatoz.html

• Help your child learn some basic insect anatomy by creating a model of a dragonfly, and learn that some animals seen in the world today also lived at the time of the dinosaurs. Basic supplies needed include construction paper, wooden popsicle sticks, strong tape, pipe cleaners, colored markers, glue and glitter (and photographs of real dragonflies from books or the Internet). For instructions go to: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/handson/dragonfly.html

• Help your child understand and apply the term "hypothesis," investigate and make predictions about the science of color, using household basics including food coloring, clean food jars/containers, colored markers and a cookie sheet. For instructions go to: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/handson/colorfulhypothesis.html

DINOSAUR TRAIN embraces and celebrates the fascination that preschoolers have with both dinosaurs and trains. This top-rated, award-winning series, which airs on PBS KIDS®, encourages basic scientific thinking skills as the audience learns about life science, natural history and paleontology. The stars of DINOSAUR TRAIN are Buddy, an adorable preschool age Tyrannosaurus rex, and his adoptive Pteranodon family who board the DINOSAUR TRAIN to embark on whimsical journeys to prehistoric jungles, swamps, volcanoes and oceans.

“Get ready for Kindergarten” shopping ideas for play, learning and fun (available at major retailers) include:

My take:  Unless you've been living under a rock (and so not able to read my blog), you know how much my kids and I love Dinosaur Train.  What's not to love about an educational show about my son's favorite subject (dinosaurs) that is entertaining to both of my kiddos (=not fighting over the channel=mommy bliss).  Well, my kids start school during August and I know some of your kiddos do too, but for many of you, the day after Labor Day is the traditional start date.   So I'm going to celebrate BACK TO SCHOOL by giving away some of this fabulous package to one lucky reader!  If YOU have a DINOSAUR TRAIN fan in your family, keep reading.

The giveaway: From the merchandise above, one lucky winner will win the Dinosaur Train Take ‘n' Play Anywhere Go Fishing Magnetic Activity, the Dinosaur Train: Triceratops for Lunch book from Golden Books, and the Dinosaur Train 16 inch T-Rex Backpack (Total value $28.97 MSRP)!  Sorry, giveaway is only for U.S. participants (since shipping is on my dime!).

This giveaway is open until 11:59 p.m., EST, Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Good Luck!

The "Big Hit" Avocado League

From Mom Central: One thing I always keep stocked in my house and at Mom Central are avocados. At only 50 calories per ounce (around three slices), and sodium and cholesterol free, they make great additions to everyday salads and sandwiches. With nearly 20 different types of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in a one ounce serving, avocados make a healthy ingredient in any dish. Not only do I feature this fruit in most of my own meals, but with baseball playoffs and football season on the horizon, avocados make a great addition to game-day snacks.

The "Big Hit" Contest and Avocado League: Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association (MHAIA) is launching the "Big Hit" contest (the Avocado League is featuring hometown recipes in Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C.)

  • MHAIA will choose 8 bloggers - one from each featured hometown - with the best recipe from the blog tour as members of the Avocado League, with public voting of their dishes to take place in late September.

  • Avocado League participants and their dish will be professionally photographed and have their own personal profile on the "Big Hit" microsite.

  • The Avocado League recipe with the most votes during the "Big Hit" contest will win the title of Avocado League MVP and the grand slam prize a $5,000 grocery gift card! Second and third place winners will receive a $2,500 and $1,500 grocery gift card, respectively. Each of the top three winners will also receive a year's supply of avocados! The five Avocado League runner-ups will each receive $100 grocery gift cards.

  • Any consumer can submit their avocado recipe and may be featured as an "all-star" recipe.

  • Avocado League participants will be announced on Wednesday, September 1 and public voting for the recipes begins in late September.
My Take:  Mom Central asked me to post my own avocado recipe "centered around your own, unique recipe that contains avocados and best embodies the spirit of your hometown (Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, or Charlotte)."  Well, the closest of those cities to me is Washington, D.C. and I wanted to go beyond the routine guacamole recipe that everyone seems to have.  What's a girl to do? Turn to the almighty Google of course.  So I googled "avocado recipe and Washington, D.C." to find a new recipe to try and this is what I found - a delicious summer salad perfect as a side dish for my husband's summer grilled steak and chicken dinners (link to the recipe author included below).  I personally cannot get enough fresh watermelon, avocado and corn, how about you?  Also, when I think of Washington, D.C., I think of the summer my husband and I spent Fourth of July there.  And Fourth of July always makes me think of summer watermelon, so this recipe is perfect.  Why don't you give this "cool" recipe a try and enter your own avocado recipe in the "Big Hit" contest?! (when the site is active, this post will be updated with a link).

from the recipe author: Mixing watermelon with corn, avocado and mint turns a sweet fruit into a delicious salad. Most watermelons are very big, and after a few drippy slices, it's nice to put the rest of it to good use. Try this salad as a side dish alongside crab cakes, fried chicken or grilled steak for a complete summer meal.

Ingredients:

1 cup watermelon, cubed into 1-inch pieces (about two large slices)
1 avocado, cubed into1-inch pieces
1/2 lemon
1/2 cup corn kernels (fresh or canned)
1/4 cup diced onion
4 medium mint leaves, chopped
Pinch salt

Directions:

Put the avocado pieces in a bowl, and squeeze lemon over top. Add watermelon, corn, onion, mint and salt. Mix well. Keep cold until ready to serve. Serves 2

My take: I received the sandals you see below in white to review.  Let me tell you, I have committed the fashion faux pas of wearing the same shoes all week with these shoes!  I'll be the first to tell you I am not a fashionista - when it comes to shoes I wouldn't know a Manolo Blahnik from a Jimmy Choo (I even had to look up those names to spell them right).  I just want a comfortable shoe that fits right, looks good, and doesn't break the bank.  Grasshopper shoes really deliver on all counts!  I have a wide foot and so cannot fit into a lot of sandals - but these "windswept" sandals are perfect - the side straps aren't biting into my foot and the sole is so comfortable it's feels like I'm walking on pillows, even after an entire day on my feet.  I'm sold on Grasshoppers and you will be too.  Check them out today - their summer shoes are all on sale and there's plenty of summer left to enjoy them.  ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Sale $34.95 Reg.$40.00

My Purple Toes

My Purple Toes

My Purple Toes
Blair Hahn (Author), Tate Nation (Illustrator)
List Price: $10.99
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Hardcover: 24 pages
Publisher: My Purple Toes LLC; Brdbk edition (July 1, 2010)
Language: English

From the publisher: My Purple Toes” is a light-hearted children’s story about enjoying life, being true to oneself and accepting others. Written by nationally recognized lawyer Blair Hahn, the board book tells a playful story about a real experience the author had with his family and features imaginative illustrations including a friendly-frog that hides on each page.

Book DescriptionMy Purple Toes is a creative children's board book written for children between the ages of one and five that tells a story about a father's experience navigating life with purple painted toenails. From mom to the kids to their dog, everyone reacts differently to dad's purple toes showing their surprise, embarrassment, and even laughter.

Throughout the book, children can look for dad's toes in various environments and also find a friendly frog with purple toes that hides on each page. In addition to entertaining, "My Purple Toes" teaches a simple, yet relevant lesson about the importance of acceptance, enjoying life and being different. My Purple Toes features cheerful, imaginative illustrations by artist Tate Nation.

Bonus:   A portion of the book sales will benefit children in the United States and around the world through the nonprofit, Soles4Souls, which collects and distributes shoes at no cost to people in need regardless of race, religion, class or any other criteria.

My take: I can not even imagine my very masculine husband allowing his toes to be painted purple.  Neither could my 5 year old daughter when we read this book, thus the hilarity of the premise of "My Purple Toes" - a dad who goes through life with toenails painted purple.  Keeping in mind that this book appears to target a younger audience (looking for the 10 toes on each page and counting them makes this a perfect book for a preschooler learning their numbers), my almost 6 year old still enjoyed the story.  When we finished, she turned to her dad and said, "If you paint your toes purple, then I'll hug your legs (like the kids in the book)!"  Knowing my husband, I don't think she'll be hugging his legs anytime soon, but I'm sure another tea party will be in his future, because just like the dad in this book, there's not much he wouldn't do for his little girl!

About the Author: A dedicated husband and father of two children, Blair Hahn is launching his first children's book, My Purple Toes. Inspired by a light-hearted experience with his daughter, he hopes to share his story and life lessons through his new children's book while giving back by donating a portion of his book proceeds to nonprofit Soles4Souls. In addition, he is the founding managing partner of South Carolina law firm, Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman, LLC, and was recently selected for the American Trail Lawyers Association's Top 100 Trial Lawyers. Blair is also the founder and former owner of Atlantic Publication Group, LLC. In his spare time, Blair enjoys writing children's books with new titles on the horizon and is helping produce a movie with Vitamin A Films. Blair graduated from North Carolina State University with a double-major in Economics and Business and received his law degree from University of South Carolina.

Chase to the Brazen Head

Chase to the Brazen Head: The China Exploration Club

by Gregory Payne
List Price: $11.95
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 228 pages
Publisher: Young Haven; 1 edition (July 16, 2010)
Language: English

Little does Archie know that he, along with his eccentric English friend, Edward and martial arts experts, Yan Yan and Sze, will be plunging into a heart stopping adventure to the Stronghold of the White Emperor, in search of the Brazen Head… But, will they get there in time? Read the book to find out!

Product Description: The past collides with the present when a theft occurs on the grounds of the Shanghai International School. A group of school friends-Archie, Edward, Yan Yan and Sze-go exploring in a long-abandoned chapel building and are horrified when they discover that their friend and mentor Ah Sook has been hurt, and that the perpetrator has stolen the key to the Stronghold of the White Emperor. They decide to try to follow in the footsteps of a 1941 expedition to the Stronghold, to try to prevent the thief from stealing the Brazen Head, an ancient bronze statue that can predict the future. But they face many dangers on the way, and must be as clever and as skilled as the best of the White Emperor's court to get to the prize in time.

My take:  Sometimes books show up in my mail box I didn't ask for; Chase to the Brazen Head was one of those books.  I seriously have no memory of asking to read this but I'm sure glad I receive it - what an awesome tale!  The tale begins with the introduction of Archie and the boy he befriends at school named Edward.  Both kind of outcasts, they bond while exploring and discover the archives/museum of the China Exploration Club (CEC), as well as the museum curator, Ah Sook.   What follows is quite a tale of adventure as the boys and their marital art instructors Yan Yan and Sze-go follow in the footsteps of the former CEC members.  I don't want to give away any of the plot but this is one action packed book, jam packed full of facts about the history and story of ancient China (especially weaponry) - let me tell you, that Edward is one smart scholar!.  I sure hope Mr. Payne has more CEC stories to tell as this would make an awesome young adult series sure to attract young men and women to reading (ala the James Patterson's ReadKiddoRead program), not to mention their moms and dads like me!  ★★★★★
About the author: Gregory Payne is from Australia and is a Hong Kong-based dispute-resolution lawyer. Greg loves to read history, pore over books on ancient Chinese weaponry, and to indulge his adventurous imagination through writing. He has been developing the story of the China Exploration Club, which is at the centre of Chase to the Brazen Head, over the last few years.
