Food Allergies are Real

Recently, the following "Reader's Rant" was published in our local paper:

Cupcakes and paranoia By ERIKA C. H.

I KNOW that something as minor as cupcakes should not set me off. However, today I am angry about cupcakes. Actually, I am angry that beautiful homemade strawberry cupcakes with homemade icing that I stayed up until midnight last night baking for my son’s class were rejected by his teacher and his school.

Let’s be clear about one thing. The cupcake debacle was completely my fault. I had heard rumors about home-baked goodies not being allowed in school. There was something in the school handbook about it as well. However, I made them anyway because he could at least share them after school should my baked goods be deemed unworthy, dangerous and illicit by Big Brother.

Sadly, the beautiful cupcakes were, in fact, declared contraband.

The no-baked-goods rule makes absolutely no sense on many levels. In fact, those who support this silly rule are, in large part, the same people who feel that the government is in essence an extension of their parents, an entity with little to no appreciation for individual thinking skills.

I’ve heard the baked goods rule supported with a variety of arguments, including children’s safety, particularly that homemade treats might contain peanut products and harm children with peanut allergies.

How certain are we that the prepackaged nasty junk in the bakery aisle at the local grocery is devoid of peanut products? And are we sure that the junky sausage dogs and other nastiness that our children are fed in the school lunchroom are free of peanut products? What about the pizza dough at Bingo last May?

Given the proclivity in our society for selectively following rules according to convenience, it would somehow not surprise me to find out this rule isn’t enforced universally. Moreover, if exclusion of the child with the peanut allergy is an issue, then there is a simple solution. The parent providing the birthday treat could provide a separate treat for the child with the allergy. My mother used to do it for the diabetic kids in our classes. Perhaps we have just become too lazy to talk to other parents or teachers to find out these things.

Why are we continually catering to groups in the minority? Is it right to make everyone suffer because of one or two people? And why are we making broad rules to respond to isolated incidents?

I can remember years ago hearing about people putting razor blades and other assorted objects into candy and goodies for children. Perhaps the next time someone stubs a toe on a doorway we should ban doorways, too. Such policies contribute to the culture of paranoia and fear we are breeding into our children. Creating that culture only infantilizes children, makes them scared of their own shadow and prevents them from taking risks.

One more thing. I find it quite interesting that in December, during holiday party time, we received an e-mail asking for cupcakes for the classroom holiday party. I guess the cupcake rule is reserved for select people and events.

I’m not in that clique, but I have no problem with it. I’ve never been the clique type
.

Some of you know, my 7 year old Small Fry has food allergies. This letter ticked me off on many, many levels. So I took a deep breath, took a week, and wrote this response. I hope they publish it. EDUCATION is KEY!

While I can appreciate Ms. XXX frustration – after all, she had very good intentions of providing a nice treat for her child and her child’s classroom – it appears her “reader’s rant” was born of her frustration and anger rather than based in fact. Interestingly enough, she even acknowledges knowing in advance of the rule of “no homemade goods” but made her cupcakes anyway.

The fact is, the schools are not “catering to groups in the minority” and “everyone” is not “suffering because of one or two people.” Approximately 12 million people in the U.S. have food allergies. That’s one in 25, or 4% of the population. Food allergies are more prevalent among young children – one in 17 under the age of 3 has food allergies.* Ms. XXX equated keeping allergens out of the schools to “taking away a child’s freedom to take risks” – and equation I cannot support. Eating for food allergic children is not just a risk taking activity. The fact is, allergies are potentially life-threatening. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is rapid in onset, and can cause death. Equating such reactions to a stubbed toe is preposterous and alarming. I don’t call that “paranoia” on the part of the schools – I call that proper judicious conduct that takes into account the welfare of all their students, regardless of disability. I don’t call that “suffering” – I call that learning compassion for those who are different. It’s hard enough to have to tell our children they cannot have the same treats as their friends without having to worry about when we are not present to protect them – having friends (and their parents) who are aware of the dangers around them can save their very lives.

Also, Ms. XXX appears to have focused on peanut allergies without taking into to account that there are many, many foods that cause allergic reactions. In fact, eight foods account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions. They are milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy. And don’t forget about gluten and strawberries – both of which were probably present in her cupcakes.

Finally, let’s look beyond food allergies – look at the current preponderance of obesity in children today - almost 60% of children in America are obese. The rate of overweight children in America is increasing rapidly. Instead of baked goods, why don’t we celebrate birthdays with non-food items?

So instead of reacting out of hurt feelings and frustration, please, for the sake of all of our children, educate yourself on the facts of food allergies first and help us protect them from harm. In this case, a cupcake really can kill. Is that worth your feelings?

NEOSPORIN® LIP HEALTH™ overnight renewal therapy™ is clinically proven to restore visibly healthier lips in 3 nights.

Product Essentials
A patented combination of antioxidants and essential lipids
Peptide and emollients to help strengthen lips
Vitamins and moisturizers to repair and nourish as you sleep
Occlusive formula designed to hydrate lips overnight
No parabens or other preservatives
No artificial flavors

From Mom Central: The cold, dry air and brittle winds of winter inevitably leave our lips chapped, dehydrated, and damaged. Many of us dread this season as we come to expect uncomfortable lip-splitting and cracking, fading color and scaly texture. To help repair and protect lips from the harsh cold-weather elements, Neosporin introduces Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy and Neosporin Lip Health Daily Hydration Therapy. Clinically shown to restore visibly healthier lips in just 3 days, these formulas help lips become more hydrated, smoother, and appear back to their normal tone.

Neosporin brings its science and expertise in skin health and healing to its
Lip Health line through a patented combination of lipids, fatty acids and antioxidants. While Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Renewal works to sooth, restore and hydrate my lips while I sleep, the Daily Hydration Therapy not only contains SPF 20 but also absorbs quickly- a feature in itself that may have me tossing out all of my other goopy lip products and lip sticks. Whether you apply all day or slather on every night before bed, Neosporin Lip Health rapidly nourishes lips and works to repair them with its unique formula including peptides, vitamins and emollients. Just throw one in your bag and you're good to go!

My take: Hi, my name is Angela and I'd addicted to lip balm. Seriously. Ask my husband and you'll receive a heavy sigh and a finger pointed at my large bowl of flavored lip balms on the counter (can't guarantee which finger so ask at your risk). My kids are both headed in the same direction as all three of us choose a different flavor each morning. Despite the daily use, our lips are still dry and cracked every day in the winter (particularly my 7 year old Small Fry whose lips typically bleed!!). And no wonder. We're using lip balms for the flavor, not for any healing properties. No longer! We received both the Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy and the Lip Health Daily Hydration Therapy to use in a "Neosporin 3-Day Challenge." What can I say but "Holy Hannah! A product that actually lives up to it's claims!" We put these two products on religiously, not just for three days but beyond because each one of us now have soft and healthy lips. Again, you could ask my husband for proof of that :-) The products don't taste like medicine either and my 5 and 7 year old both don't mind me putting it on their lips at all - they even ask me if they think I'm going to forget. If you have dry lips, I highly recommend to switch to Neosporin Lip Health products.

Bonus: Receive a coupon for NEOSPORIN® LIP HEALTH™ and discover visibly healthier lips in for yourself.

The Happiness Project

The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun
by Gretchen Rubin
List Price: $25.99
Hardcover: 320 pages
Publisher: Harper; 1 edition (December 29, 2009)
Language: English

From the publisher: Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places: a city bus. "The days are long, but the years are short," she realized. "Time is passing, and I'm not focusing enough on the things that really matter." In that moment, she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project. With humor and insight, Rubin chronicles her adventures during the twelve months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier.

My take: I was just tickled to get a chance to review this book because ironically, these past few months have been my time to change my life. To use a cliche, I decided last year that now is the time to live my best life. All my life I've cared more for others than for myself. No more. I decided that I had to make myself a priority and I have. Part of living my best life has been to live a happier life. Now granted, I had to work on clinical issues first but now that I have those under control, how can I achieve that elusive goal of happiness? Author Gretchen Rubin had the same questions and she set about answering them.

Her approach of using rational problem solving techniques to solve an intangible problem (set a goal, research, settle on the steps needed to get to that goal, then measure your success) appealed to my anal (read: controlling) nature. What I got from this book was that real happiness is obtainable by taking steps, both minute and large. I liked how the book was fleshed out with Ms. Rubin real life antidotes - she weaves in quotes, statistics, studies and personal reflections (and reader's comments from her blog) to offer insight into what happiness really is and how to get to your own personal best level of it. She never shied away from pointing out her own shortcomings and so offers a clear and honest appraisal of her own flaws and how she recognized and overcame then.

In short, I treasured this book. I took twice as long to read it as I normally would (I'm a speed reader) so I could juice every last bit of advice from it. The pages and cover are tattered and dog eared from use. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to live a happy life (and shouldn't that be all of us?)

Olivia Acts Out

OLIVIA Acts Out
(Part of Olivia TV Tie-in)
Adapted by: Jodie Shepherd
Illustrated by: Patrick Spaziante
This edition: Hardcover, 24 pages
Availability: Usually ships within 2-3 days
Our Price: $16.99
Ages: 3 - 6
Grades: P - 1

Product Description from Amazon.com: Olivia is so excited when she finds out that her class is putting on a special play. Olivia is sure she'll land the leading role. But instead of getting the lead role, she is assigned the role of "Cow Number 2" and has only one line in the whole play: "Moo!" With her penchant for turning lemons into lemonade, and the determination and humor that's unique to Olivia, she manages to secure her place in the spotlight after all.

Bonus: OLIVIA TV Tie-in Activities - PDF; OLIVIA TV Activities - PDF

My take: My kids haven't seen Olivia on t.v. yet. Not sure why, probably because I try to limit their T.V. time (as best I can, ha!) and they already have their favorite shows. That said, they still loved this book. And what's not to love? Let's start with the book itself - the outside binding (see the red binding in the picture above) is a soft velvet. And the illustrations inside are all raised up - so the characters appear to have been placed on top the backgrounds - an art technique my son uses all the time when he draws at home (he colors a background and cuts and places down people on the background). The story is cute and provides a much needed lesson for all children on making the best out of what you are given - making the best out of any situation you find yourself in. For Olivia is given a minor part in the play when she wants the lead and she manages to turn the part into something special. We've already read this book a few times and I can see how it will remain on the top of our most requested story books. Check it out for yourself, especially if you have Olivia fans in your house.

The Wish Stealers (review and giveaway)

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS Terra (non-blogger), Barbara (non-blogger), and Kelly (non-blogger).

The Wish Stealers
By Tracy Trivas

Hardcover, 288 pages
Aladdin, January 2010
Price: $16.99
Ages: 8 - 12
Grades: 3 - 7

From the publisher: Griffin Penshine is always making wishes. But when a sinister old woman tricks her into accepting a box of eleven shiny Indian Head pennies from 1897, Griffin soon learns these are no ordinary pennies, but stolen wishes.

This box of labeled pennies comes with a horrible curse: People in possession of the stolen coins are Wish Stealers, who will never have their wishes granted.... In fact, the opposite of what they've wished for will happen. Griffin must find a way to return these stolen wishes and undo the curse if her own wishes are to come true.

But how can Griffin return wishes to strangers who might not even be alive? Her journey leads her to ancient alchemists, Macbeth's witches, and a chance to help people in ways she never imagined, but the temptation of the Wish Stealers' dark and compelling power is growing stronger. Can Griffin reverse the curse in time to save herself and the people she loves?

Tracy Trivas's rich and imaginative début novel introduces a talent as bright and sparkling as Griffin's pennies.

Bonus: Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing is working with Pennies for the Planet, a successful nationwide campaign to help critical conservation projects. It’s powered by kids collecting pennies (and nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars, too!) to help save wild places and wildlife in the United States. Working in classrooms, clubs, Scout troops, other groups, with their families, and on their own, kids have turned pennies into a gold mine for wild spaces and wild species needing protection.

My take: If I had to sum up this book in one word, I would use 'riveting.' Absolutely riveting and I'm not even the target audience (it's been many years since I was 8 - 12 years old!). I took this book with me to a recent blood drive as I knew I'd have a wait (just didn't realize how much of a wait!) and let me tell you, the two hours it took me to read The Wish Stealers just flew by. In fact, my husband asked me why I waited that long and I truthfully answered him that I hadn't realized it had been two hours - the book was that good. Griffin is a compelling protagonist who I could really relate to - the "Queen Bees" she has to deal with in school are a lot like the bullies I dealt with in school - though she ends up treating them better than I would have given the chance! I love the underlying themes in the book of being true to yourself, choosing good (making good choices like I'm always telling my kiddos), friendship and love (for self and others). I'm saving this one to read over and over for my kids to read in a few years. Check it out for yourself (see below for how to WIN your own copy)!

Gotta Go Mitts

"Protects child’s hands from wetness and germs in public restrooms!”

From the inventor: Gotta Go Mitts reduce the anxiety parents have when their children say they “Gotta Go” when away from home! Gotta Go Mitts are the best product on the market for protecting your child’s hands from wetness and germs on unsanitary public toilets when your child has to hold on for balance, lift the seat, touch the flush lever, or like most toddlers, examine the bathroom floor and anything else interesting!

Gotta Go Mitts are made from a 100% polyethylene material and are completely waterproof. The mitts are very thin, not bulky, for a comfortable fit which allows the child to feel what they are touching. Due to the wide opening, design and material, the Gotta Go Mitts slip on hands very easily and fit a wide range of hand sizes up to age 7.

The small discreet packaging fits into your purse, pocket, or diaper bag easier compared to the larger packaging for disposable toilet seat covers or take along personal toilet seats. The packaging was designed to have enough room in the bag to allow the mitts to be dispensed quickly one at a time without all the mitts being pulled out. The thin package is only 6 ½ inches x 5 ¼ inches and contains 20 mitts.

Gotta Go Mitts are great also for keeping your child’s hands clean while eating lollipops or anything else sticky or messy while away from home when you are without wipes, especially in the car. Gotta Go Mitts can also be used during cold and flu season as a barrier against unsanitary grocery cart handles.

Qty: 20 mitts/pkg.

Price: $3.99

Size: Ages 2 – 7

My take: When I first heard of this product, I thought "why didn't I think of that?" So simple yet so effective. Especially for my family - for my daughter because she has always been very oral - we have an ultrasound of her sucking her thumb while in the womb and now at 5, she's still doing it - so germs get into her quite often that way. And for my son, because he has food allergies and I cringe when he has to touch the grocery store cart handles and the like - who knows what allergens are lurking there? And don't get me started on the germs in the portable toilets that line our beach during the summer...bleh! From now on, I'm keeping Gotta Go Mitts in my purse for such occasions (I love how small the package is - no bulk to my purse at all). They are simple to use - just like disposable kitchen gloves but made to fit little hands perfectly. We use them for crafts too - perfect when using food dye on our homemade play dough! Really a great product and one I'm glad to have been able to try out.

About SLKD Enterprise, LLC: My name is Stephanie Dellamura, a stay-at-home mom and mother of three. I developed Gotta Go Mitts out of a need for my three boys. I dreaded the whole public restroom experience, especially porta potties during fairs, etc. Whenever we ventured into a restaurant or store, it was assured one of them would have “to go”. I began using sandwich bags to cover their hands. Without allowing flexibility for the thumb, the bags did not allow them to grab the toilet seat easily for balance or stay on their hands. When away from home, I also needed something to cover their hands while they ate those sticky lollipops given to them by bank tellers, hairstylists, etc. Their hands would inevitably become wet and sticky without a wipe to be found in the car or my purse. After doing extensive research and not finding products on the market that were adequate, I decided to develop the Gotta Go Mitts. Two out of three moms surveyed during my product development research stated they felt the same way and would use the mitts for their children. The small discreet packaging fit easily in their purse and pockets unlike the larger packages of the disposable toilet covers. Email: info@gottagomitts.com; Web: www.GottaGoMitts.com

Team Umizoomi

THEY’RE MINI, MIGHTY AND BUILT FOR MATH!
NICKELODEON’S NEW EDUCATIONAL PRESCHOOL SERIES
TEAM UMIZOOMI PREMIERES MONDAY, JAN. 25

New Series from Blue’s Clues Alumni Offers Interactive Math-Based Curriculum,
Debuts with Two Weeks of Brand-New Episodes

From Nickelodeon: Nickelodeon will encourage preschoolers to become strong and mighty in math with the launch of Team Umizoomi, the first preschool series to focus entirely on math, on Monday, Jan. 25, with two back-to-back episodes beginning at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT). The 20-episode, half-hour series combines action-adventure missions with an interactive math curriculum designed to help kids develop self-confidence in their math abilities and appreciate the many ways in which mathematics shapes their world.

Created by Blue’s Clues alumni Soo Kim (Creator/Producer/Design Director/Writer), Michael T. Smith (Creator/Producer/Writer) and Jennifer Twomey (Co-Creator/Executive Producer/Writer), Team Umizoomi features a tiny team of superheroes who use their mighty math powers to help little kids solve big problems. Set to a soundtrack of preschool-friendly pop songs, the series is designed to build upon preschoolers’ conceptual understanding of math as they are exposed to core mathematical concepts like numbers, counting, computations, measurement, patterns and shapes.

“Math surrounds us everywhere we go, which is why we wanted to create a fun, adventure-filled, interactive series that engages preschoolers and encourages them to practice and refine their mathematical thinking skills,” said Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. “Team Umizoomi is an action-packed series with interactive math games and catchy pop songs that provide kids with takeaway tools to help them learn and use math in their daily lives.”

Following the Jan. 25 premiere, Nickelodeon will air two weeks of brand-new episodes from Tuesday, Jan. 26 – Thursday, Jan. 28; and Monday Feb. 1 – Thursday Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT). Two back-to-back episodes will also encore on Nick Jr., Nickelodeon’s 24-hour commercial-free, educational preschool network, on Sunday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 7, at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

Team Umizoomi features the voice of Donovan Patton (Joe from Blue’s Clues), and mixes 2D and 3D animation with live action to create Umi City, a uniquely patterned urban environment. The team of miniature, animated, math-powered superheroes – siblings Milli (Sophia Fox) and Geo (Ethan Kempner) and their robot best friend Bot (Patton) – help live-action preschoolers solve everyday problems. Their team is not complete without their Umifriend (home viewer), who helps the team along the way while practicing various math skills.

To complement Team Umizoomi’s math-based curriculum, Nickelodeon’s award-winning preschool website, www.nickjr.com, will include an expansive learning section for parents featuring an overview of the series’ math curriculum, suggested activities parents can use at home to help preschoolers master math concepts and recommendations for the best math books for preschoolers. The site will also feature games, videos, printables, crafts and more. Later this month, additional free, enhanced content will also be available including personalized, customizable printables and a monthly newsletter containing parent tips from preschool education curriculum experts.

In support of the launch, Nickelodeon will offer a two-minute sneak peek of Team Umizoomi on Nick Jr. Video, the broadband video service available on Nickjr.com, and on wireless carriers via video on demand. The premiere episode will also be simulcast on Nick mobile.

In the premiere episode “Kite Festival,” Jeannie is planning to fly her beautiful dragon kite in the Umi City Kite Festival, but a strong gust of wind blows the kite out of her hands and scatters its colorful shaped pieces far and wide throughout Umi City. It’s up to Team Umizoomi to rappel down city billboards, build a hot air balloon and search the tops of skyscrapers to find all the missing pieces and put the kite back together for Jeannie
.

My take: I asked to review this new Nickelodeon show for two reasons - one, my kids love all things Nickeldeon and two, I take any help I can get for them with math. I don't know about you, but most educational shows on T.V. and internet and such seem to be about learning to read. Which is awesome. But what about math? Math is very important to learn too.
The question is how to teach it in such a way that kids will keep an open mind and really learn the concepts. Starting early with a show like Team Umizoomi is one way. Used in conjunction with her school math lessons, Team Umizoomi can help my 5 year old learn basic math in a fun way. She liked the premiere episode so much, she literally asks me every day to play it over and over. She really participates too - answering the questions when the characters call on their "umifriends" (the viewers like her) to help. As a parent, I'd have to say it's not as obnoxious as some shows on t.v. today so I really don't mind her watching it. Give it a try yourself - check out the premiere on Monday!

About Nickelodeon: Nickelodeon, now in its 30th year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The company includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, online, recreation, books, magazines and feature films. Nickelodeon’s U.S. television network is seen in more than 99 million households and has been the number-one-rated basic cable network for more than 15 consecutive years. Nickelodeon and all related titles, characters and logos are trademarks of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B).

Tinycandy’s Gift

Author: Susan E. Estes
32 pages
Illustrator: Mike Motz
Retail $14.95
Recommended ages: 3-6

How the Candy Cane Got Its Name

From the publisher: Tinycandy’s Gift is a new Christmas story tracing the origins of the popular holiday treat, the candy cane. For Susan Estes’ third book, she explains that it is children’s differences that make them special to the world and highlights through vivid illustrations just how important one person can be.

Tinycandy is an elf growing up in the North Pole who always felt left out because he walks with a limp. With Christmas approaching, Tinycandy is desperate to find his special “gift” in order to contribute to Christmas in Santa’s workshop and become accepted by the other elves. Tinycandy soon discovers that his gift is making special candies shaped like hooks that make Christmas a little sweeter for everyone. Impressed by Tinycandy’s new talent, Santa christens the special treats “Candy Canes.”

In Tinycandy’s Gift, Estes creates a unique history of how the candy cane got its name and weaves in a classic tale that conveys to children one of the pivotal rules of life. Estes has spent her life working with and raising children and believes that teaching them to appreciate their own and others’ differences is the most important lesson of all.

About the author: Estes is also the author of One Miracle Under God and Choice of the Spirit Child. She is a mother of three and an active philanthropist in her community. She was awarded both the “Mayor’s Merit Award” and “Susan E. Estes Day” for her work in the Knoxville, TN community. She attended both University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Community College. In her spare time, Estes enjoys writing, reading and spending time with her family.

My take: I wish I had received this book before Christmas but it didn't arrive until a few weeks ago at the beginning of January. So it feels kind of odd to be recommending a Christmas book well after the Christmas season. That said, I am recommending it. You could order it now and tuck it away in your decorations box for Christmas 2010 - that's what I'm doing with it because I think this will be a book we read year after year. Beyond the beautiful illustrations, I loved the story which emphasizes that being different from everyone else is not only o.k., it can lead to wondrous things. Your younger kiddos will like hearing how the candy cane came about (fictitious but still a cute story). The entire book is written as a rhyme which is a bit jarring at times when words seem to be chosen just to complete the rhythm - leads to an awkward cadence - but overall it this is a book to treasure for it's message and illustrations.

From the publisher: Susan Zeidler has spent more than 20 years writing about the “real world” as an award-winning journalist covering events from major court cases and oil spills to movie premieres and the Academy Awards. She now takes her readers to magical places in her first novel, The Practice Room.

In The Practice Room, Zeidler melds her experiences as both a musician and a chronicler of current events in an exciting fantasy that reflects an otherworldly musical voyage of a young teen girl against the background of modern historical milestones.

The story takes the reader and the main character, Zoey, back and forth between worlds and settings as varied as a Los Angeles rock concert in 2002, Harlem in the 1930s, Woodstock in 1969, and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Zoey's journey not only tells the story of one teen’s coming of age and growth as a musician, but also shows how music transcends all boundaries.

My take: I am not a musician by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, I took organ lessons for 5 years as a child but I barely remember how to read music - it just wasn't my thing. Which is why I think I didn't like this book as much as some other reviewers did. Let me explain. It's not a bad book at all - in fact, the story line, which has the main character Zoey looking for information on who her real father is, kept me captivated; Ms. Zeidler is a very gifted writer. However, the book at its very basis is focused on music and music theory (the chapters are divided up by concepts such as dissonance) and since I don't understand any of that, I was a bit lost. To clarify, I read one review that called The Practice Room "A musician's Alice in Wonderland" and it really is - the story will immerse you in the world of music theory and if you are interested in that or have some background in that, you will thoroughly enjoy the book. Otherwise, I still would recommend the book for a good fantasy story, just be prepared to be a bit lost. Of course, this is one way to learn a bit more about a subject you may not know (music theory) and learning something new is never a bad thing.

About the author: While The Practice Room may seem a departure for Zeidler, it is just an extension of her life’s journey. Throughout her career, she has always had a foot in both the business and creative worlds. While writing about some of the world’s most momentous events as a news reporter, Zeidler continued to hone her craft as a musician and a writer of fiction.

While growing up on Long Island, she developed an early love for the arts. Zeidler studied piano and later went on to delve deeply into jazz. As a musician, she has performed around the world in cities as varied as Oslo, Norway; Manhattan and Los Angeles. She has additionally written two screenplays, “Tailspin” and “Hit Single.”

Susan Zeidler holds a B.A. from State University of New York at Albany and an M.S. from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She lives with her husband and daughter in Southern California.

Who is P!nk? Biography (from Amazon.com): Birthname: Alecia Beth Moore; Nationality: American; Born: Sep 8 1979 (30 years old)

With her distinctive short, pink hair, and a feisty girl power attitude, Alecia Moore's alternative moniker P!nk combines the rebellious and punky nature of her pop sound (and hair-do) with the femininity she frequently reasserts in strong terms.

Pink began her career at 14, singing in clubs around Philadelphia. She joined a band in high school, Middleground, which saw some popularity in her hometown, but it was as part of the R&B girl-group Choice that she was discovered by LaFace Records. After one album with Choice she was encouraged to go solo.

Pink's solo debut album, the R&B-flavoured Can't Take Me Home, was released in 2000. Although the album produced several hit songs ("There You Go", "Most Girls" and "You Make Me Sick"), it was not as well received critically or commercially as LaFace thought was possible. For her second album she enlisted the help of former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman Linda Perry. M!ssundaztood was released in 2001, with the album title clearly suggesting that Pink was trying to redress any misunderstandings that might've emerged from the first album. M!ssundaztood showed a change to a rockier style, and was generally warmly received by critics. It was received even better by the public, selling over five million albums in the US and producing four hugely successful singles: "Get the Party Started", "Don't Let Me Get Me", "Just like a Pill" and "Family Portrait".

Third album Try This, released in 2003, was far less successful both commercially and critically. Pink later explained that Try This was an album she was pressured by the label to make quickly. It sold less than a million copies and didn't produce any Top 10 hits in the US. Her fourth album was intended as a comeback and the title reflected that; I'm Not Dead was released in 2006 to mostly enthusiastic reviews but slow initial sales. It was the release of the third single, "U + Ur Hand" that revitalised the sales of the album. Overall I'm Not Dead showed a more personal side, as all songs were written by or with Pink and covered a wide range of topics from child abuse ("Long Way to Happy"), politics ("Dear Mr. President"), vapid consumerism ("Stupid Girls" and "Cuz I Can"), and masturbation ("U + Ur Hand").

My take: The very first Pink song I ever heard was "Get The Party Started." Then I heard "So What?" and I was hooked (both are on my running list on my iPod). Pink is such a versatile artist - which is showcased on this Funhouse Tour CD. From hard rock ("Highway to Hell") to ballad ("I Don't Believe You") to Queen (she has an amazing rendition Bohemian Rhapsody), Pink is one of, if not the, most talented artists of our generation. My only complaint with this Live CD is that some of the songs from the original CD are not included (such as "Sober"). The extra DVD is around 155 minutes and contains her complete concert in Australia (23 songs). There is also a behind the scenes of the tour film. Funhouse tour indeed...Pink's show really is "part rock show, part cabaret, part dance party, part Cirque De Soleil" - she puts on an amazing live show - I wish I had a fraction of her energy! If you are also a P!nk fan, this CD/DVD combo is a must for your collection.

NutraSalt

Introducing a new salt line called NutraSalt ...

What Is NutraSalt? NutraSalt is an all-natural, rich in potassium, healthier Sea Salt delivering the great salt taste without the excess sodium.

NutraSalt Facts:

  • 66% Less Sodium
  • Naturally Rich in Potassium
  • All Natural
  • Great Sea Salt Taste
  • Trace Elements From Red Sea
  • Minerals From Dead Sea Salt
  • Replaces Regular Salt 1 to 1
  • No Metallic Aftertaste

From the PR Firm: A new RAND study estimates that If Americans were to cut their salt intake to recommended levels – 2300 mgs of salt they'd save $18 billion in health care costs. And, if you cut sodium consumption down to 1,500 mg, they say, could save $26 billion.

By now, most of us understand that excessive sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and even kidney disease. Naturally high in potassium, which helps the body excrete excess sodium, and lower in sodium, NutraSalt is poised to become a household favorite.

NutraSalt™ is a product of over 6 years of Research and Development and delivers 66% Less Sodium but provides the same great tastes like Sea Salt. NutraSalt™ is made from a unique combination of sea salts, harvested from the Red and Dead seas. NutraSalt™ is high in Potassium, a mineral which is lacking in the American diet, and beneficial trace minerals.

My take: We received 6 salts to try out:

Low Sodium Sea Salt NutraSalt: Our all natural Low Sodium Sea Salt is rich in Potassium with trace elements from the Red Sea, and minerals from the Dead Sea. This unique combination of Mediterranean region sea salts gives NutraSalt™ its good, salt taste with the good health of 66% less sodium than any standard table salt or sea salt. $3.99

Savory Garlic NutraSalt Enjoy Savory Garlic in this perfectly balanced blend of our low sodium sea salt with full garlic-clove flavor in every savory shake! Try it with a little olive oil for all your oven, stove and grill-top cooking. $3.99

African Medley NutraSalt Enjoy our heart-warming African Medley on grilled meats, beans and roasted potatoes. This expertly crafted blend features cinnamon, ginger and other authentic spices and herbs. $3.99

Zesty Italian NutraSalt Enjoy our colorful and zesty Italian seasoning—with olive oil, garlic, oregano and other spices and herbs. Perfect Mediterranean flavor for sauces, garden-sliced tomatoes, chicken, fish and more. $3.99

Texas BBQ NutraSalt Enjoy our sweet and spicy Texas BBQ on steak, chicken, and grilled meats. Just add a splash of vinegar and shake it on oven fries, or stir it into baked beans for smokehouse goodness at its heart-healthy best! $3.99

Classic Curry NutraSalt Our Classic Curry will add warmth and richness to a variety of recipes. A signature kick of ginger and other classic curry ingredients are expertly blended for versatile cooking and seasoning use. $3.99

Since receiving the NutraSalt line to try out, I can honestly tell you we've not even opened our normal salt container. We put this set right next to the stove and anytime our recipe calls for salt, we use the Low Sodium Sea Salt NutraSalt instead (cutting our sodium intake is very important to us). And anytime the recipe calls for garlic powder or garlic salt, we use the Savory Garlic NutraSalt instead. You get the idea. Not only do I love that NutraSalt products contain less sodium than table salt, they really seem to make our recipes "pop" with flavor. With NutraSalt, we're not missing a thing without the sodium! And we've not had time to try the rest of the line yet, but what's cool is that on the website, each salt has recipes and use suggestion on their pages so we'll be getting some good ideas from there to try them out. If you are watching your sodium intake (and really, we all should), I highly recommend NutraSalt.

Musicolor (review and giveaway)

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS KELLY (non blogger)

COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES OR NEATLY
NOW CREATES MUSIC TO YOUR EARS!
Introducing Musicolor Where Two Arts Blend Into One Fun Toy

From KidStuff PR: Whether it’s banging the pots with a wooden spoon or drawing to-be-determined shapes with markers on paper, kids just love to be creative. The worlds of music and art are wide open to them and parents may think they have the next Rembrandt or Ravel sitting at the kitchen table. Imagine giving a child a toy that combines coloring with music. Delta Creative, makers of paint and craft products, has launched Musicolor -- allowing kids, incredibly, to create music by coloring (in or out of the lines)!

The three steps of Musicolor are pure child’s play -- color, play and listen. Its website, www.deltacreative.com, explains the clever concept, “innovative technology mixed with a classic coloring activity. The music player unit is modeled after the classic record player, the technology, however, is anything but classic.”

Inside the box, kids pull out special Music Note markers and color the pre-lined paper discs already programmed for familiar songs like Three Blind Mice or Jingle Bells. Tykes pop the disc onto the Musicolor player (think of an old fashioned record player) and instantly listen to their colorful creation.

How does this technology work? Their website explains, ”the Musicolor music player consists of a rotating base and an arm for reading the music discs, much the same as a DVD player reads a DVD. The arm scans over the colored areas of the music disc rotating on the music player, reads the color and translates it to sound. The player also has three sounds: piano, violin and trumpet.”

The website even shows
a YouTube video of a mom and son playing with the toy. For those that like to color outside the lines, so to speak, try Musicolor’s blank song discs and create your own songs from scratch.

Currently available online at http://www.target.com/
, http://www.amazon.com/ and http://www.deltacreative.com/, Musicolor sells for $49.99 with a variety of accessories for years of creative fun.

Musicolor • Ages: 4+ • $49.99
Musicolor is the first of its kind to combine coloring and music in one toy! Musicolor includes 1 music player, 14 pre-printed song discs, 8 music note markers, 5 create-a-song discs, and 1 pre-colored song disc. Just color the song disc, place the disc on your music player and listen to your creation. Simply color, play, and listen! Favorite Children Songs that are included: Three Blind Mice, Hickory Dickory Dock, London Bridge, Old McDonald, Jingle Bells, Humpty Dumpty, I'm a Little Teapot, and many more...

Create A Song Discs • $5.99
A full set of 20 Create-a-Song discs to use in addition to the discs included with Musicolor for endless fun.

Music Note Markers • $5.99
A full set of 8 Music Note Markers to use in addition to the markers included with Musicolor or as replacements whenever the creative mood strikes you.

My take: We received our Musicolor just before Christmas and because our kiddos were so inundated with gifts already, I decided to hold this back for a week or so. I'm glad I did because it was a great activity for my daughter to work on with her brother during her home recovery time (she was released from the hospital on 1/1 and just now went back to school on 1/11). I knew my son would like this too because he is quite the artist (draws something every day - has his own "portfolio") and both love music.

Musicolor comes with two basic kinds of paper "records" - create-a-song music cards where your child chooses which colors to use and so has their own unique music at the end, and pre-printed song discs that are color-by-number. To be honest with you, we've not even done the pre-printed disks yet because those color by number boxes are way too small for my 5 and 7 year old artists - they need some more time to develop fine motor skills before they attempt those. For them (and most younger kids I would imagine), the create-a-song disks were perfect. They both had a great time filling in the colors (each color corresponds to a musical note) and then playing the "records" on the included "turntable." Particularly fun for them was choosing to play the song with the piano first, violin and then trumpet to see how the song changed. Musicolor was a hit at our house and will be for years to come as the kiddos get older and can fill in the pre-printed cards. What a perfect activity for these dreary cold days of winter - check it out for yourself today!

“Strong and Happy” Drawing Contest

From 5 Minutes for Mom: Yoplait Kids, with 25% less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt, knows that more nutritious food choices are what moms want! Thank you Yoplait! And, as an added bonus, every serving contains calcium and Vitamin D and there are no artificial sweeteners or flavors.

Are you searching for a snack for the kids that tastes good and is good for them? Yoplait Kids yogurt is the perfect solution providing calcium and vitamin D. With its thick and creamy texture that will hug your little one’s spoon, you won’t have to worry about a sticky mess to clean up afterwards. It also contains no artificial sweeteners or flavors and has 25% less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt, so you can feel good about serving it to your kids.

According to two new studies that provide the first national assessment of vitamin D status in young Americans, millions of U.S. children have disturbingly low vitamin D levels, possibly increasing their risk for a variety of health concerns, including bone problems. About 7.6 million children, adolescents, and young adults have vitamin D levels so low they could be considered deficient. Though spending time in the sun can help children receive adequate vitamin D, it can be challenging for growing kids to get enough of the vitamin because this nutrient is only found naturally in very few foods. Yoplait Kids makes it a little easier to incorporate a delicious source of vitamin D and calcium in your child’s life.

Since Yoplait Kids is a tasty yogurt snack with 25% less sugar and calcium and Vitamin D in every serving – have your little ones draw a picture showing themselves as the happy and strong kids that Yoplait Kids can help them become
!

My take: When I saw this first ever drawing contest over on 5 Minutes for Mom, I knew we had to enter. My son not only loves Yoplait Kids yogurt (we've even been lucky enough to do a few reviews for Yoplait Kids yogurt), he loves to draw - he draws at least one picture every single day. I asked him to make today's picture one of him being STRONG and HEALTHY after eating his Yoplait Diego yogurt and here is what he came up with (it's him, looking like his hero the Incredible Hulk, with his yoplait yogurt and spoon in hand - check out those forearms!). If he is lucky enough to make it to the finals, I'll post again letting you know how to vote for my talented artist!

My take: When this movie was in the theatres, my husband and I took both our 5 and 7 year old. Unfortunately, our 5 year old decided the movies were too loud for her so I spent most of the movie with her in the hallway. So I was excited to get the DVD to watch at home, not only because our 7 year old loved it so much, but now I had the chance to see what missed. When I first heard who the producer was (Jerry Bruckheimer) I thought - wait, doesn't he produce action movies? What's he doing with a kids' movie? Well what he was doing was making a top-notch kids' action movie! This movie was really good - for adults and kids - we all laughed repeatedly while watching it. The guinea pigs were captured perfectly with amazing detail - down to the earrings on Juaraz and her indignation on being dressed up at one point. The interplay between the CGI characters and real life actors was very real - and the extra "Blaster's Boot Camp" does a great job of showing how that all worked. The bloopers were hysterical and the music videos were fun for my kiddos to dance too. All in all, a great film we will be watching over and over. And I think it would be the perfect film for those of you snow bound at home to pass the time in a fun way (and I understand that most of you are snowbound - not us in the south, alas)!
