Unscheduled "outage"

I am at the children's hospital right now with my 5 year old daughter who had an emergency appendectomy this afternoon/evening. We will be here at least 5 days. Please keep her in your prayers and I'll be back as soon as she is recovered. Thanks everyone for your understanding (if you are a reader or a company waiting on a review).

Merry Christmas!

To all readers and followers of "Did You See That?": Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and here's to a Glorious New Year for us all. Thanks so much for reading!

Matthew 1:23: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Luke 2:9-14: And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. (10) And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (12) And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, (14) “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!

Airwear Eyeglass Lenses

From Mom Central: Always in a rush to get out the door, we Moms constantly find ourselves throwing keys, wallet, and numerous other items haphazardly into our purses. Unfortunately, this means the glasses floating around at the bottom end up scratched and dinged from the piles of things on top of them. As a result, we end up buying new pairs of glasses far more often than we, and our budgets, would like!

Airwear eyeglass lenses by Essilor present a solution for active Moms like me; they're lighter, and more impact- and scratch- resistant than standard plastic lenses. In addition to increased durability, the lenses are made using environmentally conscious practices such as 100 percent recycled water, 100 percent recyclable packaging, and the company re-purposes unused materials in other industries. With these new, green practices Airwear conserves millions of gallons of water and eliminates 570,000 pounds of plastic waste every year! You can read more about Airwear's dedication to taking care of our planet at http://www.lightersafergreener.com/. Not only are these lenses 43% lighter and 10 times more impact resistant than standard plastic lenses, they offer complete UV protection and are virtually unbreakable.

My take: My husband and I both wear glasses. I think it's only a matter of time before our kids do too. I've been wearing glasses since I was in fourth grade and I still remember how heavy my glasses used to be back then - the stronger the prescription, the heavier your glasses. Technology has advanced quite a bit since then and glasses today are lighter than ever. But I was intrigued by the idea of lenses that are even lighter than plastic AND are more scratch resistant.

As luck would have it, my husband was in need of a new eye exam and glasses so we signed up to check out Airwear eyeglass lenses. He went and got a new exam and then our eye doctor filled out the voucher with his prescription. We mailed that in with a new pair of eyeglass frames (without the case) he picked up at Sam's Club a couple of weeks ago. We received the glasses last night - it was that easy!

These lenses are amazingly light - my husband says he can barely feel he is wearing glasses. And since he works in a manufacturing plant, having such scratch resistant lenses that are "virtually unbreakable" will certainly help the budget since we won't have to worry about getting new glasses all the time. Add in the "green" manufacturing processes that Airwear uses, and I'm sold on these lenses. Even our eye doctor wanted more information about Airwear so HE can promote them! And for you moms and dads whose kids already wear glasses, let me tell you that Airwear lenses are 12 times stronger than standard plastic lenses - the same material used by NASA for astronaut visors - now that's a lens I want on my child, especially if he or she is in sports. Be sure to ask about Airwear at your next eye exam!

p.s. As a member of the Lions Clubs international, I was excited to see this on Airwear's website - anyone that supports the Lions in this effort deserves an A+ in my book: Recycle For Sight - The poor eyesight of 153 million people without access to eye care could easily be corrected with used - yet usable - eyeglasses. Essilor is proud to support Lions Club International's Recycle for Sight program, which helps to conserve sight by providing useable eyeglasses to those in need worldwide for more than 80 years. Donated eyeglasses can help millions experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment, take care of their families and live a better quality life. Visit www.LionsClub.org to learn about the journey of recycled glasses and find a chapter collecting donations near you.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Airwear and received a pair of Airwear eyeglass lenses to thank me for taking the time to participate (and we paid $140 out of pocket for my husband's eye exam and new frames).

REMOVEEZ®

FOR THE HOLIDAYS “STICKY SITUATIONS” GET STUFF OFF YOUR SKIN NATURALLY WITH REMOVEEZ®

New natural skin cleanser effectively and gently removes the things kids get on their skin

From the company: The holidays can get sticky – Christmas tree sap, craft projects, packaging tape, candy canes, and parents favorite gifts of temporary tattoos and stickers. Instead of harsh scrubs and industrial chemicals the next time your family gets into something grimy, try REMOVEEZ®, a new natural liquid skin cleanser made from a blend of citrus oils with homeopathic elements of plant and flower extracts that soothe and moisturizes the skin as it cleanses.

REMOVEEZ is a perfect solution to quickly and gently deal with the hard-to-remove holiday stuff that gets on your family’s skin. Whether removing sticky and inky compounds like permanent inks, paints and Band-Aids®, or outdoor grime such as sap, tar, grease and much more, REMOVEEZ is the go-to family friendly solution designed with the human skin in mind.

REMOVEEZ’ citrus oils are natural cleaning elements that cut through the stickiness and dirt that kids bring home. Aloe, calendula, and bee pollen naturally soothe the skin and keep it soft. REMOVEEZ is applied directly to the area to be cleaned, and gently massaged into the skin until the unwanted substance has dissolved. Excess product may be wiped away with a tissue or cotton pad, or left on to moisturize the skin.

Parents Jeremy Alcock and Jeanne Le Blanc developed REMOVEEZ to deal with the everyday necessity of keeping their childrens’ skin clean, safely and gently. “During the holidays it’s surprising all the stuff we get in to, and we don’t want to keep our kids from being kids,” said Le Blanc. “We created REMOVEEZ to be a more gentle, effective and natural way to clean up our kids so they can look nice for the annual holiday card.”

The couple spent three years meticulously researching ingredients, creating the formula, and testing it with dermatologists, to develop REMOVEEZ proprietary blend of homeopathic extracts including aloe, calendula, bee pollen and Hawaiian white ginger, as well as citrus oils.

“REMOVEEZ is a great stocking stuffer for the parent on the go,” said Alcock. “The skin is the body’s largest organ. Why would you put harmful chemicals on the skin of those you love?”

REMOVEEZ is dermatologist tested and free of parabens, phthalates and PPGs and is available in Lavender / Orange, Eucalyptus / Orange, Coconut / Orange, and Clove / Orange scents. It is currently offered in 1.75-ounce bottles online through Amazon.com and at select boutiques including Studio Beauty Mix at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, Calif. For more information and availability visit
http://www.removeez.com/.

My take: We were sent a sample of Lavender/Orange and Coconut/Orange scented Removeez to try out, along with bandaids, tar, a temporary tattoo and a small Sharpie pen so we could see how Removeez worked with removing these various products. And I can honestly say, I spent the entire time testing saying "WOW!" and "AWESOME!" Truly I did because Removeez may be the coolest product I've seen that actually does what it says it does! I marked my skin with a permanent marker and it came right off. I put the Removeez on the sticky part of the bandaid that was firmly stuck to the hairy part of an arm and it came off with zero pain. It removed tar (if you have a real Christmas tree, that means easy sap removal!) and best yet, it removed all traces of the temporary tattoos my kids are so wild about {but I rarely let them wear since they are so hard to get off and they can't wear them to their private school} - they had some on already that I was able to take off with little effort. And even my son was amazed at how soft his skin was and the scents - wow - no cleaning smell, just a beautiful citrus infused scent, just like your favorite lotions. Removeez, I do not know how you did it but you have gained a life time fan with this family - Removeez has a permanent spot in our house now!

REMOVEEZ gets stuff of your skin, naturally. A soothing blend of citrus oils with homeopathic elements of plants and flowers, Removeez was created to quickly and gently remove all the sticky and inky things that are beyond soap and water. Removeez leaves the skin soft, moisturized and smelling of lavender, eucalyptus, coconut, or clove scents. Why scrub when you can easily rub the problem away? Follow Removeez online on Facebook, Twitter @removeez, and http://www.removeez.com/

Miracle of Sumatra

Miracle in Sumatra: The Story of Gutsy Gus

Author: Jeanne McNaney
List Price: $16.95
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Hardcover: 32 pages
Language: English
Publisher: Ovation Books
Publisher website: www.ovationbooks.net
Book website: www.joeypublishing.com
Category: Children’s picture book
Date of publication: October 16, 2009

Summary from the publisher: In “Miracle of Sumatra,” Gus, a young orangutan, discovers his parents have been trapped by hunters who have come to Sumatra to hunt the orangutan. With the help of his friends, Maya, a little girl, and Gabriella, the guardian of the jungle, Gus sets out to save his parents and teach the trappers about the importance of their natural habitat in Sumatra.

My take: Miracle in Sumatra: The Story of Gutsy Gus is a truly beautiful story with an important moral lesson. On the surface, it's the story of a young orangutan Gus and his human friend Maya who both find the courage to speak up and save Gus's parents and other trapped orangutans from hunters. But underneath the story, another lesson resonates - the absolute necessity of the conservation of our natural habitats (like Sumatra) and their inhabitants (like orangutans). Using young characters like Gus and Maya help children relate to the story and feel empowered to actually help - issues such as conservation, saving the planet, etc. can feel so overwhelming to our smallest citizens that it is nice to see a book where they see they can make a difference. And the illustrations are simply gorgeous - so colorful and detailed you feel like you are right there in the jungles of Sumatra with Gus. Simply a wonderful book; I can't wait to pick up a copy of "The Legend of Honey Hollow" for more of Mrs. McNaney's environmental message.

About the Author: Jeanne currently resides in Old Greenwich, Conn., with her husband and three young children. Her first children’s book, “The Legend of Honey Hollow” (Ovation Books, January 2009), introduces children to environmentalism and the dangers of global warming. She has served on the board of Pathways, Inc., which provides housing for mentally ill adults. She currently sits on the board of governors for the We Are Family Foundation and is an active volunteer with the Old Greenwich School.

About the Illustrator: French artist David Cochard has been a freelance illustrator since 1996. He received his Masters of Art at the University of Paris VIII and became chief designer of “Le Goinfre,” an award-winning comic fanzine. Currently residing in Argentina with his wife, Sandrine, David runs his own illustration company, Ilustra World.

The WEN® Cleansing Conditioner is a
revolutionary new concept in cleansing your hair that has Hollywood buzzing! It’s special because it cleanses hair thoroughly but without lathering and all the harsh ingredients that may be found in ordinary shampoos — it is designed so it won’t strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils. Your hair is left with sheen, moisture, manageability and better color retention.

Well, finally time for Holiday presents for MOM! First of all, the Sheer Cover Concealer and Foundation - I've been wanting to try mineral based make up products for a while now to see what the fuss is all about. Let me tell you, it was worth they wait! I love how light these products feel on my skin. The concealer and powder go on smoothly and don't cake up all day long. And I have sensitive skin that was not irritated at all and no blemishes erupted either. Add in SPF 15 and I'm sold on Sheer Cover.

The Wen Almond Conditioner was amazing too. I used it on my short hair and on my daughter's waist length locks. The almond mint smell is heavenly and it worked really well on keeping tangles out of her hair each day. I love how soft our hair is too. I'll definitely be looking into getting more of this conditioner for us.

My take: I loved the original Night at the Museum movie (really, I've not met a Ben Stiller movie I disliked - he is such a hoot) so I was excited to see a sequel being released. Especially when I saw all the new characters (my fav? Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart) as well as my favorites from the first movie (Owen Wilson as cowboy Jedediah and Teddy Roosevelt as played by Robin Williams). Hank Azaria as the Egyptian Pharaoh Kahmunrah [the older brother of Ahkmenrah (the Pharaoh from the original film)] simply shines as the villian (funny when I see Hank Azaria I always think of him from "Mad About You" and his brief marriage to Helen Hunt). It was fun to see more of the Smithsonian museums here; since they are closer to where I live, we've actually been to D.C. and the kids had fun pointing out things they had seen in real life. It was fun to see them come to life - both the villains like Al Capone and the heroes like the Tuskeegee Airmen. As a mom, I appreciated a movie that was suspenseful and had action, without being bloody or scary - a rarity these days! And the extras on the Monkey Mischief DVD (especially the monkey slap game!) were fun for my kiddos since the monkey was their favorite character in the movie!

All in all, a light hearted, funny family movie that would be perfect for these cold, home bound days of Winter Holidays. Pop up some popcorn and settle in for some fun!

Green Works Natural Laundry Detergent and Stain Remover

From Mom Central: The ever-expanding line of natural household products, brought to us by the makers of Green Works, now covers not just the bathroom and kitchen, but our laundry rooms. With its efforts, Green Works continually makes it simple for Moms to incorporate green living into their households. The Green Works Natural Laundry Detergent and Stain Remover, launched this past summer, upholds the same high-performance standard as other cleaners from the Green Works line. As we take care that chemicals don't find their way into our kids' hands, food, and toys, we don't want harsh chemicals on their clothes either. We can feel assured that the dermatologist-tested detergent and stain remover will go gentle on the skin, while still fighting stains. Much research and technology went into the process of creating a natural plant-based detergent and stain remover. This resulted in a patent-pending formula, which the Environmental Protection Agency's Design for Environment program recognized as safer for families. You can visit www.greenworkscleaners.com for more information.

My take: I've reviewed Clorox Green Works products twice before so you know how much I love them. So when I heard they had come out with a line of products for the laundry I was first in line with my hand up to try them out. Because of the myriad of allergies in our house, I use all natural products with no dyes or scents in our laundry anyway so it was not a big switch to use Clorox Green Works Natural Laundry Detergent instead. Did it work? Sure it did - and without any cloying scents or dyes (ingredients: Water, plant-based cleaning agents (methyl ester sulfonate, alkyl polyglucoside, cocodimethyl amine oxide), glycerine, water softener (sodium citrate), plant-derived soap (oleic acid), enzyme stabilizer (boric acid), natural enzymes, alkalinity builder (sodium hydroxide), fragrance with essential oils, salt, calcium chloride, biodegradable preservative, blue & yellow colorant. Contains no phosphate or bleach.) The clothes I washed were really clean and did not irritate any of our skin when we wore them (believe me when I tell you we've had that issue before with other detergents).

As far as the Green Works Natural Laundry Stain Remover goes - I can't tell you. I haven't used it yet (the products were shipped to me very late in the tour - I think they were lost - and I've not had any stains to try it on yet). But I can tell you it is scent free like the Laundry Detergent and made with no phosphates or bleach (ingredients: Water, plant-based cleaning agents (alkyl polyglucoside and alkyl glucoside), glycerin, water softeners, enzyme stabilizer, natural enzyme, alkalinity builder, essential oils, thickener (xanthum gum), calcium chloride, biodegradeable preservative, silicone antifoaming agent) so I have no qualms about using it next time I see a stain to get out.

Great job Green Works! I look forward to seeing more of the line in the future.

Gifts in a Snap!

From SnapGifts: SnapGifts is managed by a team of seasoned, well-done entrepreneurs. The primary goal of SnapGifts is to make it easy for consumers to give gift cards, especially cards from regional and local businesses.

Imagine a scenario where you want to give someone in another city a gift card. Today, you would need to buy a card from a national brand (since local cards from another city and not easily available locally), go to the post office and mail it to the gift card recipient. With SnapGifts, you can simply click on the city, find cards from regional and local businesses with locations and Yelp ratings, purchase a card and have it sent to the recipient. In other words, we make the whole process easy and at the same time drive additional revenues to local and regional businesses.

We are currently focused on seven cities:
Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, and Lawrence, KS with plans to expand nationally {CPA Mom note: don't forget to check out these other cities and national brands gift cards that are available too}

In the near future, we will also make gifting even easier by providing e-gift cards that can be emailed to the recipient instantly. We have a few of them in Kansas City now.

Our Guarantee Is Guaranteed. Please use our site to purchase gift cards with confidence. If for any reason, a business refuses to accept a SnapGifts gift certificate, let our customer service know, and we will gladly refund your money.

If you have any comments or questions, please
contact the guy who started it all, he would love to hear from you!

Please keep in mind that one of the things that makes site unique is that we are offering cards for locally-owned businesses - nearly 600 total, countrywide.

My take: I was given a $25 gift code from SnapGifts to check out the site. I gave the code to a friend of mine to use instead and got her reaction to the site: "Holy cow! They have a lot to choose from! Sorry it took me a couple of days, I got overwhelmed with the choices. I thought I might get a New York card so I could have lunch in the city one day. But let's face it, when am I going to have time to go to the City? So I jumped over to the national chains. Then the question was, do I get something for myself or a Christmas gift for someone else? That Barnes & Noble was practically singing my name. Then I saw the Cracker Barrel logo. My mom and dad go to Cracker Barrel for breakfast every week. My mom loves it. Food & shopping- what's not to love? Christmas gift for mom won out. This site will come in handy for giving gifts to my out of state relatives- wish I had thought of it."

I felt the same way - a bit overwhelmed by all the choices, but in a good way. And if you really can't make up your mind, get a SnapCard for your recepient and let them choose!

Really, no matter what kind of gift card you are looking for, I would bet you'll find it on snapgifts.com! Perfect for all of us you last minute gift givers out there!

Spilt Milk

Spilt Milk
List Price: $9.98
Audio CD
Original Release Date: October 20, 2009
Number of Discs: 1
Label: Blue Note Records

Product Description from Amazon.com: 2009 debut solo album from the singer/songwriter. Hearing Kristina Train for the first time is nothing less than a revelation: her sunny, easygoing demeanor and youthful good looks belie the heart-wrenching power of her voice. Train's Blue Note debut, Spilt Milk, is urbane and soulful, lush in its arrangements but intimate in its emotions, built on a foundation of classic and deeply felt Southern Soul.

From the producer: Blue Note Records presents soulful newcomer Kristina Train’s debut album, Spilt Milk, available October 20th 2009. Spilt Milk was produced by Jimmy Hogarth, whose recent credits include Duffy, Corinne Bailey Rae and James Blunt.

“I always had a feeling that music wouldn’t just be in my life,” declares singer Kristina Train. “It would be my life.”

Hearing Kristina Train for the first time is nothing less than a revelation: her sunny, easygoing demeanor and youthful good looks belie the heart-wrenching power of her voice. Train’s Blue Note debut, Spilt Milk, is urbane and soulful, lush in its arrangements but intimate in its emotions, built on a foundation of classic and deeply felt southern soul. The title track unfolds with an almost cinematic grandeur, its string-laden chorus swelling with widescreen melancholy. Balancing the sultry with the strong, Train excels on bittersweet breakup/makeup numbers like “Don’t Remember” and “It’s Over Now.” As the aphorism of the album title suggests, the album tells the story of an indomitable spirit. Train knows how, over the course of a song, to walk away from a relationship with tremendous style.

For inspiration, Train turns to Aretha Franklin – “There is not a song that Aretha has sung or will ever sing that doesn’t just melt me” – along with blues/R&B cult figures like former Stax star/Raelette Mable John and Bob Dylan-favorite Karen Dalton. Says Train, “I wanted my album to offer glimpses of my influences, not sound like my influences. I hope the album is a nod to the music I love, while still being modern.”

Music has been at the center of Train’s world since she was a toddler, when her mother encouraged her to play the violin. Train took to the instrument, but, more importantly, she also discovered an innate aptitude as a singer, with unerring pitch and a preternaturally mature delivery from a very young age. Says Train, “There’s depth to my voice and I think it comes from a lot of different places. But the way I sound today is the way I always sounded -- except in a tinier body.”

As an artist, Train could never simply be described as a product of her times and that has allowed her, on Spilt Milk, to create music that can arguably be called timeless. Her mom, who raised Train alone, fashioned what some might view as a sheltered existence for the young Train, keeping her away from television and pop radio. But what she really did was provide a fertile laboratory for Train to freely grow as a young woman and a singer, apart from the vagaries of trends. Train took music and ballet lessons and listened to classical music and opera, along with jazz and blues. Her violin training definitely came in handy: Train has arranging credits on three of her tracks and overdubbed strings on two of them.

Though born in New York City , Train was raised in Savannah , Georgia, and southern soul and gospel, which she sang in church and school choirs growing up, has had the most profound effect on her work. Almost as significant was the moment when, as a teenager, she unearthed her mom’s tucked-away stash of vinyl albums from the sixties and seventies: Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin. Say Train,” I remember hearing Janis Joplin’s records and thinking, what is that all about? We lived in downtown Savannah , in a house kind of like a New York City brownstone. When we had thunderstorms I would go up to the roof and scream at the top of my lungs because I wanted to make my voice raspier. God only knows what that’s done to me!”

By the time Train was 19, she was already singing professionally, albeit locally. A producer based in the south who’d spotted Train arranged to bring her up to New York City to showcase for Blue Note. The label chiefs offered Train a development deal – but her mom had other ideas. She insisted her daughter go to college first. Many a confident and headstrong young artist would rebel and go it alone, accept the deal and take their chances. But Train – reluctantly, she now admits – listened to her mom. She agreed to attend college in Athens , Ga. , keeping her hand in music by joining a band and spending far more time rehearsing and gigging than hitting the books. And when she was ready to return to her career full-time, Blue Note was still waiting.

It was time well-spent, Train now realizes: “I know that at 19, I would not have made this record, which is the record I always wanted to make. This is the album that defines who I am. At 19, I don’t know what I would have put out. I believe everything happened for a reason. It took this amount of time for me to get here and to make this record. I always knew it would happen. “

Train’s confidence and faith in what she has created is part of what makes Spilt Milk so thrilling: “There’s just this magic thing that happens sometimes and you think, I want to sing this song for the rest of my life – I want to live in it, I want to bury myself in it, I want to wriggle around in it.. Every time I finished one, it was like, I can’t believe that, at this point in my life I finally have a song I would fight for, that I believe in 100% percent. And now I have all these songs together on an entire album that I feel this way about. For me, that’s my college degree.”

More information:

My take: My taste in music can best be described as eclectic. I own hundreds of CDs from Country music (Brooks and Dunn, Reba, Garth Brooks) to Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban to Keb Mo' and Meatloaf. So I'm open to most any style (except for violent lyrics) and was eager to hear this new artist, Kristina Train. Her debut CD, Spilt Milk, does not disappoint. It's tough for me to categorize her music - is it pop? blues? soul? jazz? A bit of all of the above. One thing I do know, the entire CD is beautiful music produced by a very talented young woman. I'm reminded of the dulcet tones of Diana Krall and Norah Jones when I listened to the tracks but really, Kristina has a style all her own, one I'm sure will lead her straight to the top. And not only does she have an amazing voice, she writes, plays the violin, and was instrumental in the arrangement and production of her debut album. Bravo Ms. Train on a job well done. I can't wait to hear more from you as your career progresses!

Maukilo.com toys (review and giveaway)

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON,GET THEM A TOY THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME
Maukilo.com Offers a Wide Selection of European and American Toy Brands

From the KidStuff PRIt seems that nearly everyone has made the mistake of buying a “hot” holiday toy for a child, only to find it six months later, barely used (maybe even still in its packaging!), and tucked away in a closet or lost in a pile of toys. Those supposed “must-have” toys, which are typically battery-operated and tech-oriented, don’t inspire creativity or offer open-ended play like classic toys. Maukilo.com, an online ecommerce store specializing in European and American toys, is an oasis for parents looking to purchase unique gifts that children will actually play with this holiday season.

Whether purchasing a set of wooden building blocks, a hand-knit doll, arts and crafts supplies, or a game with multiple play styles, customers have come to depend on Maukilo as a place to find expertly made, heirloom-quality toys. These toys are not only well made, but they’re also made to exceed safety standards. Wooden toys sold at Maukilo.com are finished with non-toxic, natural lacquers; and plastic toys are made from child-safe, PVC-free materials. Maukilo’s goal is to provide toys that are made to last, so that any toy can withstand the test of time and be passed onto the next generation.

Maukilo.com is owned by HABA, a 70-year-old German toy company, and shares a warehouse with HABA in upstate New York. Because of this partnership, Maukilo.com is able to offer more than 1,500 HABA items, the widest selection of HABA products in the United States. For Families

GEO Toys GeoPuzzle Animals • Ages 4+ • $14.95 As children assemble this 68-piece puzzle they learn which animals are found on which continents. Made in Germany.

GEO Toys GeoPuzzle Animals - GeoPuzzles are jigsaw puzzles that make learning world geography fun! The pieces of a GeoPuzzle are shaped like individual countries, so children learn as they put the puzzle together!

AnimalsGeoPuzzles are durable and come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. They are made from recycled material, because we wouldn't want to tear up the earth to teach kids about it :-)
GeoPuzzles help to build fine motor, cognitive, language, and problem-solving skills, and are a great introduction to world geography for children 4 and up. Designed by an art professor, jumbo sized and brightly colored GeoPuzzles are available for all 5 major continents.

Maukilo’s relationship with HABA means that every purchase helps HABA, and other European brands, thrive and stay in business in the United States. Although European toy companies are known for their high quality and safety standards, new U.S. toy safety testing has put a strain on many of those companies. All European products must first pass stringent European testing, so the added expense of additional US toy testing is making it financially difficult for those companies to survive in the US. One German toy company, Selecta, has already pulled out of the United States due to the increased cost of importing and reselling children’s products in the USA. It seems especially important this year to support European toy brands, so that they can remain in the United States and continue inspiring creativity and play for this generation, and future generations.

My take: You may recall my recent review of HABA games. HABA is just one of the many brands sold by Maukilo toys. We received the GEO Toys GeoPuzzle Animals you see above to try out. I requested the puzzle because my 7 year old son would play with puzzles all day long if you let him and I was intrigued by the thought of a puzzle that would not only challenge his mind in the construction of it, but would also teach him after it was put together! Much like the United States puzzle we already own, assembling the GeoPuzzle helps my son learn what the different countries in the world look like and where they are in location to one another. With this puzzle he also learns some of the animals indigenous to the countries as well. If you have a child who loves puzzles, you can't go wrong with this one under your tree this year. Now I'm off to check out the other cool toys maukilo.com has to offer this Christmas...Santa needs some help from his elves you know!

About Maukilo: Maukilo.com got its start in 2000 when a German-born woman, Alexandra Goedrich, couldn’t find any of the toys, that she herself grew up playing with, for sale in the United States. So, she began an ecommerce site specializing in the sale of European toys. The business quickly outgrew the small California apartment it started in, as Americans discovered (and in some cases, rediscovered) brands including Sigikid and HABA. Now, Maukilo offers a wide selection of wooden and PVC-free plastic toys and games from more than 40 European- and American-based companies. Visit Maukilo’s website at http://www.maukilo.com/.

The giveaway: One lucky winner will win a $25 gift card to spend as he or she likes on http://www.maukilo.com/ (the code won't expire until 5/31/10 either - plenty of time for shopping for the holidays or well after)!

Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life (review and giveaway)

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS TRACEY (nonblogger) and
THAT CHICK OVER THERE (winners 3, 4 and 5 have yet to respond - check your emails - new winners will be drawn Tuesday 12/22 night)

by: Rachel RenƩe Russell (Author, Illustrator)
List Price: $12.99
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Aladdin (June 2, 2009)
Language: English

Description from publisher: New school. New mean girl. New crush. New diary so Nikki can spill about all of it...The Dork Diaries follows young Nikki Maxwell, who chronicles through text and sketches her move to a snooty new school; her epic battle with her mom for an iPhone; her enthusiasm for drawing & art; and a love/hate fascination with the new school's queen bee, a girl named Mackenzie who becomes Nikki's rival in a school-wide art competition.

My take: My long time friends know I was the epitome of "dork" growing up. I loved to read, wore glasses, had braces and "*gasp* got straight "A's" in school. To say I was bullied would be an understatement. To say I had to deal with mean girls wouldn't even begin to cover it. And just like Nikki in "The Dork Diaries," I kept a diary in which I poured out all my angst. I didn't have Nikki's art talent to illustrate it though! Seriously though, this book reads exactly like you are reading someone's diary; from the lined pages to the illustrations to the teen lingo, it's a great first person account of the life of a "dork" these days. If you have a young adult reader, especially a girl tween, this book will be right up their alley. I devoured it in just a few hours and if a middle aged mom enjoyed it that much, you know your tween will too! Hmm...I bet it would be the perfect fit for a stocking....

This review was sponsored by the Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing who provided the books for review and giveaway. I was not compensated in any way except for the complimentary book.

Bonus: Check out this cool companion site to the book and "Nikki's blog!".

The giveaway: FIVE lucky winners will win their own copy of Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life, courtesy of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing!

To win: Leave a comment here telling me the name another Simon and Schuster book that looks like a good read to you. Be sure to leave your email address with your comment if you are not a blogger or your email is not easily found on your blog. Adorable Kinders Rag Dolls Are a New Classic (review and giveaway)

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS
BLESSED!

THESE KINDERGARTENERS EARN GOLD STARS
FOR DIVERSITY, CUTENESS AND SNUGGLEABILITY

From the PR firm: Did you ever play with rag dolls as a child? Granza, Inc. is bringing back the classic rag doll for today's child. The company's Adorable Kinders are a line of 26 multicultural 18" rag dolls (one doll for each letter of the alphabet) that come in exquisitely detailed removable clothing. Adorable Kinders® Rag Dolls are a reminder of the sweet simplicity of Kindergarten, and the joy that classic toys can bring to children.

Adorable Kinders® are high-quality rag dolls based on a diverse group of kindergarten friends. There are 26 Adorable Kinders Rag Dolls, one doll for each letter of the alphabet-- from Alise to Zachary. Together, the 26 rag dolls represent a wide variety of physical appearances and personalities.

The dolls were designed for durability, but safety and comfort were also huge factors. They’re made of 100% soft cloth, with no hard or plastic parts, making them a perfectly comfortable nap or nighttime pal. Each doll weighs less than 2 lbs., so they’ve got enough heft to feel substantial without weighing a child down.

Adorable Kinders’ classic look and attention to detail and safety has not gone unnoticed. The Adorable Kinders have already won seven of the top toy industry awards in 2009, including being named to Dr. Toy’s 10 Best Toys of 2009 List, and earning a NAPPA Gold Award. The Toy Man gave the Adorable Kinders four awards, below is an excerpt from his review.

“Every detail of this rag doll demonstrates a design with a meticulous effort. What I personally found most captivating with Mari, (the sample submitted to us), was how Mari had such an exquisite level of detail in every facet of her design. This was especially so with the dress and other garments which Mari was so proud to wear. As people held Mari, they were literally captivated by the charisma which she seems to exude. She wasn't just a rag doll to them, rather, Mari was seen as seen as so much more; a potential educational tool and friend for their children.”

Here’s a look at the award-winning line:

Adorable Kinders Rag Dolls • $59.99
Each 18” Adorable Kinders Rag Doll is made in the USA, and stuffed with non-allergenic 100% polyester. Dolls come in a colorful, removable outfit with separate underwear, socks and shoes with super-soft yarn hair. All Adorable Kinders Rag Dolls and their outfits are washable. Dolls come with an internet key-code that can be used to register for the Adorable Kinders eSchool. Choose from 26 different styles, one doll for each letter of the alphabet. Ages 2+.

Adorable Kinders Accessories • Most accessories are $8.99- $59.99
First day of school? Maybe it’s time for bed? Or a holiday party? There are Adorable Kinders outfits available for every major event. Accessories include dress-up outfits, pajamas, shoes, clothes hangers and more.

Adorable Kinders aren’t just about being a classic. The Adorable Kinders are bringing the rag doll into the 21st century with a fun and challenging online game zone called Adorable Kinders (AK) eSchool. Each doll comes with a unique internet key-code that children can use, with their parent’s permission and assistance, to create a username and access the online area.

The AK eSchool is full of activities to help develop a child’s computer, reading and problem-solving skills. School starts at the Kindergarten level, and children complete challenges using their knowledge of letters, numbers, patterns, and rhymes to unlock the next level, or grade. Each grade level presents children with harder challenges. eSchoolers can currently unlock up to the 4th grade level, with more grades and zones coming this December.

Outside of eSchool, there are additional activities available at www.adorablekinders.com. Kids can choose from the 26 Adorable Kinders characters and play house with them, create a printable greeting card or sticker sheet using their favorite Adorable Kinders doll, or have fun coloring on a digital coloring page.

The Adorable Kinders line has developed into what it is today thanks to a mother’s desire to fulfill her late son’s dream. Aranza Zamora-Goodenbury began hand-making rag dolls at age 16 in her native Puerto Rican home. They were such a hit, she began making rag dolls regularly, and each was better than the last. Despite her passion for making the dolls, motherhood and other careers soon took over. In her free time, Aranza still created rag dolls and was interested in producing a line of dolls and computer games based on her dolls. It wasn’t until her son Ivan got involved that the idea took off, and the two of them began to work on the product full-time.

Just as the product design and concept was coming together, Aranza’s son Ivan passed away from an undetected heart condition. Struck with grief and missing her business partner, Aranza tabled the rag doll project.

A few years later, Aranza gave one of her rag dolls to a friend’s daughter for her birthday. Everyone at the birthday party, including the dads, fell in love with this simple yet extraordinary rag doll. Future business partner and husband, Greg Goodenbury, was at that party and saw everyone’s reaction to Aranza’s doll. After more than a year of planning, Greg and Aranza decided to proceed with the rag doll project. They also got married!

Together they formed GRANZA, Inc.— a name created by combining the names Greg and Aranza, and developed a line of 26 doll characters and the Adorable Kinders eSchool. They decided to keep operations based in the U.S., to help create local jobs. The 26 characters they created represent a wide range of ethnicities, hair colors and personalities—much like you would find in any kindergarten classroom.

Specialty toy retailers have reported back an interesting trend regarding Adorable Kinders. They’ve noted that when a parent picks out a doll for their child, they pick the one that’s the closest match in skin tone and hair color; whereas, if a child picks out a rag doll for themselves, they’re more likely to pick one with little resemblance.

“We love how this pattern shows how children can be so open-minded and loving, and not only accepting of differences, but the fact that children don’t even see them as differences,” co-creator Greg Goodenbury said.

My take: I asked to receive the Dulce doll because she looks so much like my daughter.

Dulce
Item# 0607-01D
$59.99

Product Description
Adorable 18 inch soft rag doll Dulce (D), 18 inch tall, dressed for bed in purple pajamas with pink hair ribbons, slippers and a teddy bear. Dolls / Toys made in USA. (Fabric prints may vary)

When I opened the box, I literally gasped. The quality of this doll and attention to detail is THAT amazing. From the braids on her head to the teddy bear in hand, Dulce looks just like my daughter. I can tell already that I'm going to need to purchase some of the clothes to go with her since there is nothing my daughter likes more than a doll she can dress up. And you know what else I really loved about Adorable Kinders is the variety - there is a doll literally from A to Z - and each looks different from the last - in all skin tones and in both genders. You will find a doll to match your child (or totally opposite if you want). And the Kinders (AK) eSchool that you have access to with your purchase is a welcome addition to our at-home reinforcement of school learning. It will be perfect for my daughter to work on during the long Christmas/Winter break so she's ready when school starts up again in January. So if you have a little girl or boy on your list who loves soft, cuddly dolls like these, be sure to check them out in time for Christmas this year!

About Granza, Inc: GRANZA’s mission is to create high-quality products that are not only fun for children, but that spark their imaginations. The company’s Adorable Kinders® soft-cloth rag dolls were created as a lasting legacy of creator Aranza Zamora-Goodenbury’s late son, Ivan. The 26 ethnically diverse dolls are a variation of the rag doll Aranza has been making by hand since she was 16 years old.

Bonus: Use the coupon code AKBLOG25, good through December 31, 2009, for 25% off the entire purchase price on www.adorablekinders.com.
