Oscar Mayer Lunchables

From Mom Central: With back-to-school just around the corner, we face the daunting task of making delicious lunches that our kids will actually like. I remember how much care I put into packing my son Brooks' lunches to make sure he had a wholesome meal, only to find out he traded every day with a friend!

Thus my excitement to learn about the new Oscar Mayer Lunchables Lunch Combinations, designed to satisfy both picky eaters and our need to provide our kids with convenient and better-for-them lunchtime options. The Lunchables team is introducing a new line of Oscar Mayer Lunchables Lunch Combinations, which includes spring water and a number of firsts for the brand, including sub sandwiches and applesauce.

The six new varieties include:

  • Turkey + Cheddar Sub Sandwich
  • Ham + American Sub Sandwich
  • Turkey + Cheddar Cracker Combos
  • Ham +American Cracker Combos
  • Deep Dish Cheese Pizza
  • Deep Dish Pepperoni Pizza.

Both the Turkey + Cheddar Sub Sandwich and Deep Dish Cheese Pizza meet the Kraft Foods Sensible Solution criteria for nutritional value.

The product line also offers the following enhancements:
· First-ever sub sandwich
· Turkey made with 100% turkey breast: a good source of protein
· Bread made with whole grain
· Kraft 2% cheddar: an excellent source of calcium
· Applesauce
· Dessert like Chewy Chips Ahoy! Cookies and Mini Nilla Wafers

My take: My kids started school a week ago and while I wasn't anxious about figuring out what to put in their lunch boxes (after all, I'd been packing them a lunch every day this summer to send with them to daycare), I did want to make sure they had a lunch they'd actually eat. At the same time, I don't want to send in junk that won't fuel their bodies and their minds either as school requires a lot more brain power than summer day care. To complicate matters, I have one child with severe food allergies AND a pickiness problem. So I was skeptical when I brought home one of the new Oscar Mayer Lunchables Lunch Combinations - would my picky kid like them? Would they be nutritious enough?

Luckily, my son was really pleased with the Turkey and Cheddar Cheese combo. It contained 100% turkey breast meat, Kraft 2% Cheddar and Ritz Crackers along with Tree Top® Applesauce, Mini Nilla Wafers, spring water and Tropical Punch Kool-Aid Singles. He was particularly pleased with the water and Kool-Aid Singles pouch and asks for that at every meal now. We also tried the Ham and American Cheese combo (lean ham, Kraft 2% American and Ritz Crackers along with Sugar-Free Jell-O, Chewy Chips Ahoy! Cookies, spring water and Tropical Punch Kool-Aid Singles) because he loves Jell-0). {Mom Central paid for one package - we bought the 2nd one.}

And what did I think? I was won over with the lower calorie count in these new combinations compared to the old versions. The two we tried had 370 and 380 calories. The fat was a little high (16 and 13 grams) as were the carbs (53 and 40 g - not good for diabetics!). The worst part was the sodium count at a very high 850 and 780 g. (children ages 4-8 are only supposed to have 1,200 g a day) so I don't think we'll be taking Lunchables in every day but as a once a week treat, I'm fine with it. It's certainly means for an easy packing day for me as all I have to do is throw the package in his lunchbox! Anything that saves me time is a winner for me.

Once a Witch

by Carolyn MacCullough
Reading level: Young Adult (Ages 12 and up)
Hardcover: 304 pages
Publisher: Clarion Books (September 14, 2009)
Language: English

She's the only witch in the family with no apparent talent -- so how is she supposed to save them from the powerful forces allied against them?
Story: Family misfit Tamsin Greene is glad to be far away at a Manhattan boarding school. But when a handsome young professor mistakes her for her very Talented sister, she goes for it—and promises to find his lost family heirloom. Unfortunately, the task (and the stranger) prove far more sinister than she expected, and she’s forced on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful it could destroy them all.

Story behind the story: Here's what author Carolyn MacCullough has to say about how ONCE A WITCH came to be, the writing, the setting, teen talent, and her favorite authors:

The spark: All of my stories start with a character telling me something urgent. With Once a Witch, I heard Tamsin’s voice in my head saying she was born into a magical family—and yet she herself had no magical talent whatsoever. I wondered: How would she cope in a family like that? What kind of person would that make her be? Read the "rest of the story" from the author at The Picnic Basket...

My take: In reading all these Young Adult fiction novels for The Picnic Basket lately, I feel like I'm reliving my early teen years, only this time with better reading material! Don't get me wrong, I always had a good book in my hand growing up (truly I never went anywhere without something to read) but it does seem that the YA fiction offerings today are even better these days. A perfect example is this book, Once a Witch.

What makes this book such a good read? Well, it's entertaining for one - even as a 38 year old professional woman, I found I didn't want to put the book down. The face-paced story was riveting to say the least; I couldn't wait to see how Tamsin’s story was going to turn out. Was she ever going to have a Talent? Was she going to solve the mystery of the missing clock in time (and dude, does that not remind you of the old Nancy Drew book - one of my all time favorite books and series)? Suspense, humor, young love (*sigh*), detailed character-driven plot, sibling rivalry (I sure can relate to that!), this book has it all. I stayed up long past my bed time to finish the story. And what an ending...I hope I read the ending correctly as a perfect set up for a book 2? I sure hope so because I think Tamsin's story is far from over. What do you say Ms. MacCullough? Will we be hearing more from the Greene family? Pretty please?

5+ out of 5 on the Picnic Basket scale (see below)

Bonus: Discover facts and misconceptions about witches, plus quizzes, a Green Family Tree, a mesmerizing excerpt and more at the Once a Witch website.

About the author: Carolyn MacCullough was born and raised in Connecticut, and found her way to Scotland, Sicily, Iceland, and even the wilds of New Jersey before settling down in New York, where she writes and teaches creative writing. If she could choose a magic Talent, she would probably choose flying. Or reading people's minds. Or making all green vegetables taste like milk chocolate. She received her MFA in creative writing from the New School and is the author of three previous young adult novels. She lives with her husband in Brooklyn, and you can visit her online at www.carolynmaccullough.com.

The Other Half of Life

by Kim Ablon Whitney
Historical fiction
Reading level: Young Adult (Ages 12 and up)
Hardcover: 256 pages
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers (May 12, 2009)

From The Picnic Basket: A fascinating, heartbreaking story of World War II Jewish refugees fleeing to safety -- inspired by a true story. “The Other Half of Life is a wonderful introduction for young readers to contemporary history and its traumatic and moral challenges.” --Elie Wiesel

Story: Fifteen-year-old Thomas is on board the MS St. Francis, a luxury liner whose crew is made up of Nazis -- yet whose passengers are Jewish. While he feels fortunate to be one of the few Jews to escape Hitler's Nazi regime and flee to safety in Cuba, he is also skeptical. Most passengers are celebrating their escape from a life of imprisonment, persecution, and death; but not all. When Thomas begins noticing some of the crew's shady antics, his suspicions are confirmed that the congenial atmosphere and the promise of a life of freedom are not what they seem. Upon the ship's arrival in Cuba, Thomas and the other passengers endure the implementation of changes in immigration policy, forcing them to return to the dreaded place from which they fled. The Other Half of Life tells a lesser-known World War II story, and gives readers another lens through which they can view the plight of these Jewish refugees.

Story behind the story: Kim Ablon Whitney's fascination with the true story of the MS St. Louis began immediately after she read an article about the ship's doomed voyage; she was captivated by the heartbreaking story and what life on board must have been like. "From the first time I read The Diary of Anne Frank and Night, I have always been interested in events surrounding World War II and the Holocaust. When I heard of the tragic story of this journey, I knew I wanted to try to bring it to life for future generations."

My take: I worked for 5 years as the controller of a local Jewish fundraising group and in doing so, was educated in all manner of Jewish life, both past and present. It was one of the most fascinating and exciting times of my life to be exposed to another religion, culture and life. Of course, through their Holocaust Commission, and the many dedicated volunteers, teachers and survivors involved in educating our local youth, I learned far more about the Holocaust than I ever wanted. The devastation, the loss of life, the pure evil involved in that tragedy is too much to wrap your mind around. Can you imagine a young adult trying to grasp the sheer enormity of the concept?

That's why I loved this book - it put a human face on a complex and horrible period of time. Of course, some of the details of the book (long segues into the game chess and how it is played) are tedious (but would probably be appreciated by chess enthusiasts). The author's research in this area, as in all others, was obviously exhaustive. I did appreciate the symbolism of the chess games though - the fact that even as Thomas and his shipmates moved the pieces on the board, they, themselves were pawns in the game of life as they waited to discover their fate. I was also grateful for the epilogues at the end of the book (10 years and 70 years after the voyage) that wrapped up the fate of the characters I had grown to care so much about. The Other Half of Life is an amazing work offering a glimpse into a dark period of our history but a period that must be studied, lest we lose the lessons of that time. 5 out of 5 on the Picnic Basket Scale (see below).

Bonus: In addition to reading many books and newspaper articles on the voyage of the St. Louis, the author also viewed the handful of videos with interviews with survivors -- and even interviewed one of the survivors herself. The Other Half of Life encourages readers to consider the origins of persecution, other countries’ reactions and responsibilities to persecution, and the humanitarian treatment of refugees. See the teacher's guide and video of a presentation about the book for additional information and ways to get the discussion going.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Actors: Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, Adam Goldberg, Kathryn Hahn, Annie Parisse
Directors: Donald Petrie
Number of discs: 1
Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested); Canadian Rating: PG
Studio: Paramount
Deluxe Edition Release Date: August 18, 2009
Run Time: 116 minutes
Pricing: $14.99 U.S./ $19.99 Canada (DVD)
$29.99 U.S./$34.99 Canada (Blu-ray)

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY AND KATE HUDSON STAR IN THE HILARIOUS ROMANTIC COMEDY ARRIVING IN AN ALL NEW DELUXE EDITION ON DVD AND BLU-RAY

From the studio: The irresistibly funny romantic comedy HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS makes its move onto DVD and Blu-ray in an all-new Deluxe Edition arriving August 18, 2009 from Paramount Home Entertainment. Pairing Matthew McConaughey (Tropic Thunder) and Kate Hudson (You, Me and Dupree) with delightful results, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS is an uproarious battle of the sexes that appeals to both men and women. While Andie (Hudson) needs to prove she can dump a guy in 10 days, Ben (McConaughey) is determined to show that he can win a girl in the same amount of time. The result is a wildly outrageous tale of sex, lies and romantic fireworks.

A review from Amazon.com (with a good plot summary): Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) is a columnist at Composure Magazine. She writes the "How To" column intended for a female audience (Composure is similar to Cosmo or Glamour). The column she agrees to write for the current month is "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". She has to find a guy and start dating him, but intentionally make all the classic mistakes that women make in relationships. These mistakes will cause the guy to dump Andie in 10 days or less, which is just in time for Andie to finish her column and get it published.

Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) works in advertising. He is very good at what he does, but he is known for working on "guy" related campaigns. Ben wants to land his company's largest client, a diamond company, but he is seen as not having the right expertise and style for it. Ben is very good at selling himself and convinces his boss that he can get any woman to fall in love with him (being able to do this is similar to being able to sell diamonds, apparently). His boss gives him ten days, until a party that his boss is throwing for the new client. Benjamin has to be able to prove to his boss that the woman he brings to the party has truly fallen in love with him.

Bonus: The discs include the following special features in high definition as noted:

· Commentary by director Donald Petrie

· How to Make a Movie in 2 Years (HD)

· Why the Sexes Battle (HD)

· Girls Night Out (HD)

· Music Video: “Somebody Like You” by Keith Urban

· Deleted Scenes with optional commentary by director Donald Petrie

My take: I had to be dragged to watch this movie kicking and screaming. Well, not literally. But I really wasn't interested in the slightest because Kate Hudson annoys the crap out of me (I don't care what people say, she is NO Goldie Hawn) and really, I'm not a big fan of granola boy (Matthew). My opinion about this movie started to change when I read this review. Since I happen to think Stephanie is one of the funniest people on the planet, I knew if she liked the movie, it HAD to be good. So I requested a review copy and settled down to be entertained.

And entertained I was (whoa - channeling Yoda there I'm thinking). Once I got past my annoyance at the actors themselves, I really enjoyed this funny flick. It was fun to see all the stereotypes played out and I found myself actually cheering the two on in the hopes they'd get it together. Yes, I'm a sappy romantic, sue me. One caveat - I was still slightly annoyed with Kate Hudson's character - yes, she had a degree from Columbia and so I could see why she wanted to write more than "fluff." But come on, she worked at a "fluff" magazine - if she is so smart, why couldn't she figure out that "serious" pieces weren't going to fly at this type of magazine? Ah well, a small irritation, easily overlooked in the enjoyment of the rest of the story. If you are looking for a fun date night movie, I do recommend this one.

Breathe The Sky

Breathe the Sky: A Novel Inspired by the Life of Amelia Earhart

List Price: $14.99
Paperback: 208 pages
Publisher: Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing (October 1, 2009)
Language: English

From the author: Dakar. Karachi. Singapore. The shark-infested waters beyond Lae, New Guinea. Breathe the Sky is the first novel to explore the dangerous, madcap course of Amelia Earhart’s last voyage. At the apex of her career, when the 39-year-old aviatrix decided to fly around the world and set one final record, few could understand why. Even her husband, George Putnam, heir to the media and publishing empire, warned her not to go. Yet she was resolute in her decision. She would circumnavigate the globe at its widest point, the equatorial line, or die trying.

Meticulously researched and vetted by a veteran pilot, Breathe the Sky fills in the gaps that biography and history have not. It fleshes out the pilot at her most pivotal moment. It brings her to life once more, securing her place in the pantheon of great explorers, while inspiring risk and adventure in its readers.

Product Description from Amazon.com: Amelia Earhart disappeared from the world's radar in the 1930s, but she has not been forgotten. Breathe the Sky is a fresh and provocative portrait of the legendary pilot whose courage and charisma have dazzled millions. It is also the first novel to reveal the dark side of Earhart's fame-and the dangerous, madcap course of her final voyage. Venturing where history and biography have not, Breathe the Sky takes the reader on Earhart's last expedition along the equatorial line, through wild storms, across endless desert and jungle, and over shark-infested waters. With stark, nimble prose, Prasad brings Earhart to life once more, securing her place in the pantheon of great explorers, while inspiring risk and adventure in readers.

My take: Back in October 2007, I was lucky enough to participate in a book tour for Chandra Prasad's novel On Borrowed Wings. Prior to reading Ms. Prasad's latest novel, I didn't know much about Amelia Earhart. But knowing Ms. Prasad's writing talent from reading On Borrowed Wings, I knew I was in for a treat with Breathe The Sky. To say I was not wrong would be an understatement as Breathe The Sky is simply, well, breathtaking. Ms. Prasad has put a human face and story on what was a stale historical figure for me. Keeping in mind that this is "neither biography or historical document," (Author's Note in the back of the book) it is still a compelling peek into the mind of our most famous female aviatrix as Ms. Prasad explores Earhart's life from a 6 year old child in complete awe of her father to her complex relationship with her husband and mentor, publishing magnate George Putnam. From beginning to end, I was fascinated by Earhart's unique story and truly believe you will be too. Ms. Prasad is one of our generation's greatest writers and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Bonus: Breathe the Sky's publication coincides with the October 23, 2009 release of a major motion picture about the pilot entitled Amelia, starring Oscar award winner Hilary Swank and directed by Mira Nair (Distributor: FoxSearchlight).

About the author: Chandra Prasad is the author of the Connecticut Book Award finalist ON BORROWED WINGS, a Simon & Schuster novel. ON BORROWED WINGS follows a quarryman's daughter as she attends Depression-era Yale University. Sara Gruen, author of Water for Elephants, says, "Prasad has created an inspired and timeless heroine whose intelligence, imagination, and determination have you rooting for her from the very first page." Prasad is also the editor of, and a contributor to, MIXED: An Anthology of Short Fiction on the Multiracial Experience, which was released to international acclaim by W.W. Norton. Her other works include prize-winning short stories and the historical adventure DEATH OF A CIRCUS, which Booklist calls a "richly textured" book "packed with glamour and grit." http://www.chandraprasad.com/

Rating: G (General Audience)
Studio: Walt Disney Video
DVD Release Date: August 19, 2009

Pricing: $29.99 US, $35.99 Canada

From the studioAnimation and live-action combine to bring the magical friendship between a young orphan and his unusual best friend to life in Pete’s Dragon High Flying Edition, coming to DVD on August 18, 2009 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. A classic feel-good Disney tale for the entire family, Pete’s Dragon High Flying Edition is packed with adventure, comedy and soaring musical numbers that have charmed children and adults since its 1977 debut. Now available in this special edition DVD, Pete’s Dragon High Flying Edition comes with nearly an hour of brand-new bonus features, including a look at Disney’s live action/animation legacy, alternate versions of some of the film’s most beloved songs and much more.

Dragon In the Cave (Film)

Pete’s Dragon is an uplifting musical adventure about a spunky young orphan that blends live action and stellar Disney animation. With his only friend Elliot, a tubby, 12-foot tall dragon who can make himself invisible, Pete (Sean Marshall) takes refuge from his abusive adoptive family in the seaside town of Passamaquoddy, Maine. After Elliot’s invisible antics wreak havoc with the residents and Pete gets the blame, Nora (Helen Reedy) is touched by the youngster’s plight and takes him to live with her and her tippling father Lampie (Mickey Rooney) in the Passamaquoddy Point lighthouse. Lampie’s tipsy tales of the boy and his dragon amuse the disbelieving townsfolk, until the local quack, Dr. Terminus, discovers that Elliot is real and hatches a scheme to capture the dragon. An exciting and inspiring story with unforgettable music, including the Academy Award nominated “Candle on the Water,” “There's Room for Everyone” and “Brazzle Dazzle Day,” Pete’s Dragon High Flying Edition will be a perennial favorite with children and parents.

Pete’s Dragon was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Music, Original Song and Best Music, Original Song Score and Its Adaptation or Best Score). The film boasts an extraordinary cast that includes Sean Marshall (“To Race the Wind”), Helen Reddy (Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), Mickey Rooney (Night at the Museum), Jeff Conaway (Grease), Shelley Winters (The Poseidon Adventure), Jim Dale (“Pushing Daisies”) and Red Buttons (“ER”), with Charlie Callas as the voice of Elliot the Dragon.

Bonus Features

• Brazzle Dazzle Effects: Disney’s Movie Magic – An entertaining new look at Disney’s pioneering work in the magical mix of live-action and animation, narrated by the star of Pete’s Dragon, Sean Marshall.

• Deleted Storyboard Sequence: “Terminus & Hoagy Hunt Elliot” – A rare demo dialog track and storyboard sketches.

• Original Song Concept: “Boo Bop Bopbop Bop (I Love You, Too)” – The first demo recording for one of the film’s unforgettable musical sequences with story sketches for an early concept of the song Pete sings to Elliot.

• Original Demo Recordings (Audio Only) – A special audio-only feature that includes early demo versions of “Brazzle Dazzle Day” and “Every Little Piece” before they evolved into the songs heard in the movie. Also includes “The Greatest Star of All,” a song originally intended to be sung by Ferdinand, a character later deleted from the film.

• Promotional Record (Audio Only) – Pop versions of “It’s Not Easy,” “Brazzle Dazzle Day,” “There’s Room For Everyone” and Academy Award nominee for Best Song, “Candle On The Water,” originally released together on a 7” record to promote the film’s music.

• “Where's Elliot?” – The Disappearing Dragon Game
• Pete's Dragon Art Galleries
• Publicity
• Trailers
• About Pete’s Dragon
• Disney Family Album
• The Plausible Impossible
• Lighthouse Keeping

My take: Talk about a walk down memory lane! When Pete's Dragon (High-Flying Edition) debuted in 1977, I was only 6 years old. I remember this movie though...how I wished I had my own Elliot. Alas, the supply of dragons being a bit dicey, I never received one of my own. No matter, now I can watch the movie again with my own children and enjoy the nostalgia. Now 32 years old, the movie special effects are a bit antiquated, but you know what? I like that. I don't think children need all the bells and whistles of today's movies to be entertained. This story is just as charming today as it was back in 1977 and I recommend it for anyone with young children looking for a nice movie you can watch together. You can't go wrong with Disney movies, either from today or your own childhood.

My take: We received the Hannah Montana The Movie (3-Disc Combo Pack Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] to review and while we don't have a Blu-ray player (*sigh*), we were able to watch the DVD copy of the movie. I, for one, was happy to finally be able to take a look at what this Hannah Montana phenomenon is all about. I've never seen the show on Disney, nor has my daughter. But that doesn't stop her from being the biggest Hannah Montana fan on the planet! Last year on her 4th birthday, she received a Hannah Montana t-shirt as a gift from a friend and it's been all downhill all Hannah Montana ever since. Her birthday this year has a Hannah Montana theme and she has quite a few pieces of Hannah Montana merchandise already. So what's the verdict on the movie? Simply put, we really liked it. It was perfect family friendly movie that we enjoyed watching together. I liked the themes of being true to yourself and your real friends, simple living, valuing people over material things, and young love. My daughter and I (and even my son) loved the music and got up several times to dance along - that Hoedown Throwdown song is a particular favorite now so we'll be buying the soundtrack soon. All the music was very good (but I'm a closet Miley Cyrus music fan already, shush, don't tell!) and I was thrilled to see Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift in cameo roles (also two of my favorites). The movie was funny and thoughtful, with plenty of laughs and teaching moments. Good Job Disney! I'm thinking we'll be watching the show on the Disney Channel now...

Daniel X: Watch the Skies

By James Patterson, Ned Rust
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company; 1 edition (July 27, 2009)
Language: English
List Price: $19.99

From Mother-Talk / Mom Central: As both a bestselling author and the father of an eleven-year-old son, James Patterson truly believes that the best way to get people excited about reading is to give them books they'll love. To help create a lifelong appreciation for books in kids everywhere, James Patterson has recently added young adult series to his repertoire, including, as many of you know, Daniel X. The first book in the series, The Dangerous Days of Daniel X, told the story of a teen with secret powers who hunts aliens and protects the Earth. It was read and loved by adult and kid readers alike, including the toughest customers of all – boys! Now, Patterson introduces his second novel in the series, Daniel X: Watch the Skies. In this story, an evil outer-space outlaw named Number Five comes to a small town on Earth intending to produce an intergalactic version of "Survivor," with a twist: every human in the town will be eliminated. Daniel finds himself on a quest to stop Number Five and his alien crew, not just to save the world, but to save himself.

From the publisher:
LIGHTS
All's quiet in the small town of Holliswood. Television sets, computers, and portable devices are aglow in every home, classroom, and store. Yet not all is perfect. Evil is lurking, just out of sight, behind the screen.

CAMERA
Residing in this sleepy town is a villain with more ambition than the world can withstand. Twisted beyond reason, he is dead set on throwing Holliswood into chaos and documenting the destruction of every person in it, including Daniel X.

EXTERMINATION
The only person who can stop this made-for-TV tyrant, Daniel must use his extraordinary power to save the town. But this devilish director has assembled an all-star team of his own creation and vows to stage the most spectacular finale the world has ever seen. Can Daniel X stop this deranged outlaw--or will he find himself on the cutting room floor?

My take: Back in September, I reviewed The Dangerous Days of Daniel X for Mother-Talk and shared with you why I like James Patterson and his personal campaign to get boys reading. This sequel, Daniel X: Watch the Skies, is another (literal) page turner. I say literal because these chapters are only 2 -3 pages long (there are 91 chapters in this book). The action moves quickly and decisively, something I imagine appeals to the target audience of adolescent boys (and gives instant bragging rights - "I read 50 chapters today!"). Now, these books are no Harry Potter replacement series (unlike one quote I read) but they (along with Mr. Patterson's Maximum Ride series) are a good way to get non-readers hooked on the love of reading. And I liked the inside "joke" if you will, of this story (that our current fixation with all things electronic helped lead mankind the brink of annihilation - I imagine Mr. Patterson is not-so-subtly pointing out the superiority of reading over electronic games and toys). Bravo Mr. Patterson - Daniel X: Watch the Skies is another hit for your repertoire and I'm looking forward to seeing what Daniel X is up to next!

About the Author: The subject of a recent Time magazine feature called, "The Man Who Can't Miss," James Patterson is the bestselling author of the past year, bar none, with more than 16 million books sold in North America alone. In 2007, one of every 15 hardcover fiction books sold was a Patterson title. In total, James's books have sold an estimated 150 million copies worldwide. He is the first author to have #1 new titles simultaneously on The New York Times adult and children's lists and is the only author to have five new hardcover novels debut at #1 on the list in one year — a record-breaking feat he’s accomplished every year since 2005. To date, James Patterson has had nineteen consecutive #1 New York Times Bestselling Novels, and holds the New York Times record for most bestselling titles by a single author (40 total).

Patterson is a champion of reading and the founder of the PageTurner awards, which seek to spread the excitement and joy of books and reading in the United States. James's first foray into family fiction, the critically acclaimed Maximum Ride series, debuted on the New York Times list at #1 and remained there for 12 straight weeks. The series has so far made appearances on The New York Times bestsellers lists 87 times, proving that kids of all ages love page turners.

I Love You, Man

Actors: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones, Jane Curtin, Andy Samberg, Jon Favreau, Jamie Pressely, J.K. Simmons, Lou Ferrigno
Release Date: August 11, 2009
Pricing: $29.99 U.S./$36.99 Canada (DVD)
$39.99 U.S./$49.99 Canada (Blu-ray)
Runtime: 104 minutes
Studio: Paramount Home Video
U.S. Rating: R for pervasive language including crude and sexual references
Canadian Rating: 14A for coarse language and crude content

From the studio: Paramount Home Entertainment invites you to make a man-date when the unforgettable bro-mantic comedy I LOVE YOU, MAN debuts on DVD and Blu-ray. Paul Rudd (Role Models, Knocked Up) and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) are “howlingly funny” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) in “one of the funniest movies of the decade” (Steve Oldfield, “Fox -TV”), a story of a guy with no male friends who finds himself in need of a best man. After a series of awkward outings, Peter (Rudd) finally bonds with fun-loving Sydney (Segel). Rudd and Segel’s “bro-mance” takes male-bonding to hilarious new heights in a story that comically explores what it truly means to be a friend.

The I LOVE YOU, MAN DVD and Blu-ray presentations include commentary by director John Hamburg (writer, Meet The Parents, Zoolander) and stars Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, The Making of I Love You, Man, 50 minutes of hilarious outtakes, deleted and extended scenes and a gag reel.

I LOVE YOU, MAN DVD & Blu-ray: Both discs include the following special features, in high definition on Blu-ray as noted:

· The Making of I Love You, Man (HD) – An 18-minute feature with cast interviews and a special look behind-the-scenes of the film’s most outrageous moment
· Outtakes (HD) – Hilarious alternate versions of scenes with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel
· Extended Scenes (HD)
· Deleted Scenes (HD)
· Gag Reel (HD)
· Commentary by director John Hamburg and actors Paul Rudd and Jason Segel
· Red Band Trailer (HD) – Blu-ray exclusive

Editorial Review from Amazon.com (excerpt from): Paul Rudd has to be the most infinitely likeable man in Hollywood; he manages to capture the ideal blend of sincerity and awkwardness but never comes off as annoying. As Sidney, Jason Segal departs from the neurotic and insecure roles that have nearly made him a household name in Freaks and Geeks and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He channels instead the endearingly arrogant and emotionally stunted man-boy who is both life of the party and sad clown. The story is pretty simple-making friends tends to get more and more challenging as we get older and more settled into our lives. That's never been truer than for Peter Klaven, a so-called "Girlfriend Guy" who's never really had a best guy friend. As Peter begins to plan the rest of his life with the girl of his dreams (Parks and Recreation's Rashida Jones), the pressure to find a best man and not feel like a friendless freak becomes more intense. Enter Sidney, a Venice Beach-dwelling, super-laid-back, Rush-loving, vaguely employed (but clearly successful) financial planner with no desire to commit, a room in his house dedicated to all things masculine and an intense desire to have a good time as often as possible. Soul mates, right? As directed by John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, Stella), I Love You, Man is consistently funny and totally relatable.

My take: Simply put, this movie is one of the funniest I've seen in a while. Maybe it's because I've had numerous discussions with a certain someone in my life about what I see as a need to have more guy friends. Maybe it's because of the talents of Paul Rudd and Jason Segal. Maybe the script, the cinematography, or whatever..."I Love You, Man" is the total package for me. It was a great date night movie since both my husband and myself were laughing throughout. There was just enough Something About Mary humor to keep my husband happy, and just enough of the more subtle, wry humor to keep me happy (I don't really want to give away any more details - this is one movie you'll have to see for yourself). A story about a "bro-mance" instead of a "chick-flick" romance was a nice change as well. But you don't have to take my word for it - to see for yourself how funny this movie is, take a look at this deleted scene and then go get yourself a copy of this movie!

Kellogg's™ Cinnabon™ Snack Bars Original

Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bar

From the PR Firm: The madness of consumers’ busy lives just got surprisingly more rewarding. Thanks to new Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bars, the indulgent flavor of Cinnabon® has been captured in a wholesome snack bar, giving consumers an unexpectedly indulgent treat to enjoy during even the most hectic times.

With 92 percent of Americans looking to “take a break” from their daily routine, people need to relax and recharge, even if it’s brief.

“Finding time to treat the ‘you’ in yourself is important to maintaining a balanced life, especially during hectic times like these,” says Stephanie Marston, lifestyle expert, speaker and accomplished author on topics surrounding life-balance techniques. “These snack bars are a perfect example of a simple way to cut through a busy day with a moment of relaxation.”

Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bars offer a chance to momentarily hit the reset button and enjoy a surprisingly indulgent, wholesome snack. Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bars can also be enjoyed warm by heating just a few seconds in the microwave, sending the unforgettable smell of cinnamon throughout your home or office and heightening the enjoyment of the snacking experience. While they taste delicious, including a rich, flavorful filling and sweet icing, each bar is 150 calories, so they can easily fit into a balanced and healthful eating style.

Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bars are available in two flavors - Original and Caramel. Find the new Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bars at your local grocer. More information about Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bars is available at http://www.kelloggs.com/.

My take: I've done quite a few Kellogg's reviews for Mom Central. This is not one of them. But as a huge fan of Kellogg's (seriously, you should see my freezer and pantry), I was quite happy to accept a free box of the new Cinnabon® Snack Bars from their PR firm to try out. The sacrifices I make for you readers, I'm telling you. And being as I'm perpetually on a diet, and had to give up the sweet cinnamon goodness of Cinnabon® years ago, the thought of having THAT taste with only 150 calories was too good an offer to pass up. Do the bars live up to their hype though? In one word, yes. In four words, OH MY GOODNESS YES. I've only tried the original Cinnabon® Snack Bars but they are oh-so-good, especially heated up. The perfect snack for those afternoon rumblings, paired with a mug of coffee or hot tea. You'd be hard pressed to find a similar cinnamon bun snack at only 150 calories. Now I've got to get my hands on a Caramel flavored one!

Bonus: Cinnaminutes – Simple Tips for a Quick Break - To help consumers identify even more ways to treat themselves to a quick break, Marston and the Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bar team developed 60 Cinnaminutes – simple ways to step back from the day in one minute or less. These short breaks can be enjoyed between meetings, waiting to pick up the kids or on the way to the next appointment.

Some of the quick-to-do, stress-relieving Kellogg’s® Cinnaminutes include singing at the top of your lungs to your favorite song, reflecting on an enjoyable memory of your family or smelling something refreshing like lavender.

“These Cinnaminutes show that even taking a simple minute out of your day to reward yourself helps create a sense of balance and relief in your life,” Marston said.

The full list of Kellogg’s® Cinnaminutes can be found at the Kellogg’s® Cinnabon® Snack Bar fan page at www.KelloggCinnaminutes.com.

Race to Witch Mountain

Dwayne Johnson Stars in an All-New Excursion into the Supernatural
Inspired by Two Beloved Disney Adventures

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN
Actors: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig, Garry Marshall
Director: Andy Fickman
Number of discs: 3
Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Studio: Walt Disney Video
DVD Release Date: August 4, 2009
Run Time: 99 minutes
Pricing: 1-Disc DVD: $35.99; 2-Disc DVD: $44.99;
Three-Disc Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def Combo Pack: $51.99 SRP

From the studio: A tough-talking cab driver joins forces with otherworldly siblings to stop a global disaster in Race to Witch Mountain. Inspired by the classic Disney adventures Escape to Witch Mountain and Return from Witch Mountain, this all-new movie is packed with spectacular effects, action, and family-friendly thrills. The latest installment in the popular series, Race to Witch Mountain is available in three-disc Blu-ray Combo Pack that includes the film in both Blu-ray and DVD formats, two- disc DVD and single-disc DVD. Both the Blu-ray Combo Pack and two-disc DVD include DisneyFile, a digital copy of the movie that can be viewed on an array of electronic devices, and are packed with bonus features that keep the excitement coming long after the film has ended.

Race to Witch Mountain reunites Dwayne Johnson (The Game Plan, Get Smart) with director Andy Fickman (The Game Plan, She’s the Man) in a rousing sci-fi adventure that the entire family will enjoy. The film also stars AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabitha), Alexander Ludwig (The Seeker: The Dark is Rising ), Carla Gugino (Night at the Museum),Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do), Ciaran Hinds (The Tale of Despereaux, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I), Chris Marquette (Just Friends), Billy Brown (Lakeview Terrace), Cheech Marin (Beverly Hills Chihuahua) and Garry Marshall (“The Simpsons”), with special appearances by Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who played Tina and Tony, the siblings who hold the fate of the world in their hands, in the classic Disney films.

Las Vegas taxi driver Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson) sets off on the adventure of a lifetime when two mysterious teens ask him to drive them deep into the Nevada desert. Jack agrees to take siblings Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) to Witch Mountain, a shadowy government outpost devoted to studying inexplicable phenomena – including UFO sightings. But his young passengers are no ordinary teens. With a ruthless adversary on their trail, Sara and Seth display astonishing supernatural abilities and Jack becomes a reluctant hero as he helps them evade their pursuer. As Witch Mountain reveals its long hidden secrets, Jack discovers that his passengers are the only key to saving the world!

My take: Escape to Witch Mountain and Return from Witch Mountain were two of my all time favorite movies when I was a kid. I recently purchased them for my kiddos to watch and my son especially seemed to really liked them too. I, of course, was appalled by my apparent lack of good taste as a child - my goodness, those are some really bad special effects! But I digress. The point is I was greatly anticipating the latest Witch Mountain installment. Throw in my very favorite action star (*sigh*) and it's safe to say I had high hopes for the release of Escape to Witch Mountain. Overall? I didn't love the movie, but I liked it well enough. The special effects aren't bad - of course, they are worlds ahead of the cheesy affects from the original movies. And while the villain in this movie is no Bette Davis, he's believable enough. I loved seeing all the references to the first two films (for example, I KNEW a Winnebago was going to make an appearance); the director really paid homage to the first movies in the franchise and I appreciated that. So I'd say this is a great family sci-fi film, with some good action scenes that aren't too violent for the kids to watch - perfect for family movie nights. 4 out of 5 binkies.

Bonus:
See if you can spot the actors who portrayed Tina and Tony from the original Witch Mountain movies. Hint - they are in the same scene.

REDDIE PRINZE JR AND JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT LEAD AN ALL-STAR VOICE CAST IN THE MAGICAL, HEART-POUNDING ANIMATED ADVENTURE

From the Studio: When a rebellious boy forms a forbidden friendship with a spunky princess, hostilities between their two kingdoms escalate, setting the stage for an exiled Empress to exact her revenge in Delgo, which debuted on DVD August 4 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Starring a talented voice cast including Freddie Prinze Jr. (Scooby Doo), Jennifer Love Hewitt (“Ghost Whisperer”), Val Kilmer (The Doors), Chris Kattan (“Saturday Night Live”), Kelly Ripa (“Live with Regis and Kelly”), Anne Bancroft (The Graduate) in her final film appearance, Lou Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman) and Burt Reynolds (Smokey and the Bandit) among others, Delgo takes place in a magical world where two civilizations, divided by fear, and two hearts, guided by love, have one chance to save their world. With the help of a devious traitor and two bumbling servants, an exiled Empress (Bancroft) kidnaps the Nohrin princess (Hewitt) and frames a Lockni teenager, Delgo (Prinze Jr.), for the crime, igniting a war between their people. Desperate to clear his name and rescue the princess, Delgo and his faint-hearted friend Filo (Kattan) join forces with a disgraced Nohrin commander (Kilmer) to prove Delgo’s innocence, rescue a princess, reveal a traitor, end a war and unite the peoples of the land before it’s too late.

Touting positive life-lesson messages about responsibility, friendship and unity through stunning CGI animation, enchanting music and inspiring characters, the Delgo DVD features an exclusive award-winning animated short, Chroma Chamelon, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes and more!

Synopsis: The land of Jhamora is torn apart by the mutual prejudice of two peoples – the winged Nohrin, masters of the skies, and the terrestrial Lockni, who harness the mystical powers of the land. When Delgo (Prinze Jr.), a reckless Lockni teenager, forms a forbidden friendship with the spunky Nohrin Princess Kyla (Hewitt), hostilities between the two peoples escalate, setting the stage for an exiled Empress (Bancroft) to exact her revenge and reclaim her rule.

Bonus Features include:
• Audio Commentary with Directors
• Featurettes
o Behind-the-Scenes
o Sounds of Delgo
o Meet the Characters
o See the Creatures
• Award-winning animated short: Chroma Chameleon
• Deleted Scenes (additional 14 minutes of footage)

My take: I tried hard to like this movie. After all, I first heard about it back in December when Team Mom asked me to post the movie specs. I was intrigued by the all-star cast; surely a movie that has the likes of Anne Bancroft, Malcolm McDowell, Louis Gossett Jr. and even Burt Reynolds would be a good one. Unfortunately, not so much. The story arc is tried and true - an evil villain or two (rather deliciously voiced by McDowell and Bancroft), a young hero with a hot temper (dude, Prinze's character is SO much like Luke Skywalker, it's not even funny), an annoying side kick (Jar Jar Binks anyone?), a war of good vs. evil and love between the two sides triumphing in the end (classic Romeo and Juliet). The animation is really well done with some of the better CGI I've seen lately. However, there was just something missing. I spent most of the movie (as did my children) wondering just when it was going to be over. I just couldn't connect to these characters - I thought they all were just, well, lame. It was flat and uninteresting and just blah. Not something I'll be recommending but if you do see it, be sure to heed the PG warning - it's a bit violent for the younger set. 2 out of 5 binkies.

Polliwalks - Fun for Feet!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS
REIZA!!

A company that is committed to innovation, design and Fun! We believe that shoes shouldn't just be shoes:they should be toys for feet!

From the company: Once upon a time, children's shoes were taking themselves a bit too seriously, and feet were not having any fun. Then one day, a new brand named Polliwalks™ was created. Polliwalks™ brought fun back to children's feet. All the children loved their Polliwalks™. They took them home, quickly became best friends, and lived happily every after. When was the last time a shoe looked you in the eye and made you smile? Feet have never had so much fun! Go on, go outside and play!

My take: Full disclosure - this is not our first exposure to Polliwalks. About a year ago I read a review on another blog about these ab-fab (absolutely fabulous) shoes for kids and immediately purchased two pairs (the ladybugs for my daughter and alligators for my son). A year later, they have worn these shoes slam out. Polliwalks are ALL they want to wear. So it was no surprise that when we received new Polliwalks (frogs this time all around since there are a limited number of Polliwalks that come in size 2), both children immediately placed them on their feet. I'm not sure they've come off since.

And as much as we love the frogs, it was HARD to decide on which shoe to look at - dude these are seriously cute shoes. I dare you not to squeal with delight when you check out the new line of Sesame Street Shoes (not on the website yet) which run from size 4-10 (so too small for my kids, darn it!).

Let me tell you too, not only are Polliwalks cute, they are DURABLE. The ones we purchased a year ago are a little worn (the eyes have worn off and the bottoms are a bit scuffed) but they lasted a full 6 months more than the sneakers we bought at the same time.

The giveaway: One lucky winner will win one pair of Polliwalks!

To win: Visit Polliwalks and come back here and leave me a comment telling me which shoe style (and size!) you would pick if you are the winner! Be sure to leave your email address with your comment if you are not a blogger or your email is not easily found on your blog. This giveaway is open until 11:59 p.m., EST, Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Good Luck!

HOW TO BE A TIGGER

My take: "The wonderful thing about Tiggers, Is Tiggers are wonderful things, Their tops are made out of rubber, Their bottoms are made out of springs, They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, Fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN!, But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers, Is I'm the only one! (you can see the rest of the song here)" I must confess - the truest Tigger fan in my house is ME. I actually used to own a jacket with these lyrics written on in the inside. For Christmas or my birthday, I was guaranteed to receive at least one more Tigger collectible from family because dude, that was all I wanted! Yes, I was in my 20's, what of it? There's something about Tigger that brings back the child in all of us really. I have been so tickled these past years to pass on my love of Tigger and Winnie-the-Pooh to my own children too, with movies like these (and with all my Tigger collectibles - my daughter's nursery was painted "Tigger's Tummy" yellow and all my collectibles still reside in her room). To my delight, they both really enjoyed watching The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary Edition with me and I look forward to watching the fun over and over again (with them or by myself!) in the years to come. And a great bonus with this special edition is the DisneyFile Digital movie copy so you can watch it on your laptop wherever you go!
