The Lace Makers of Glenmara

by Heather Barbieri
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Harper (June 23, 2009)
Language: English
List Price: $24.99

Product Description from Amazon.com: "You can always start again," Kate Robinson's mother once told her, "all it takes is a new thread." Overwhelmed by heartbreak and loss, the struggling twenty-six-year-old fashion designer follows her mother's advice and flees to her ancestral homeland of Ireland, hoping to break free of old patterns and reinvent herself.

She arrives on the west coast, in the seaside hamlet of Glenmara. In this charming, fading Gaelic village, Kate quickly develops a bond with members of the local lace-making society: Bernie, alone and yearning for a new purpose since the death of her beloved husband, John; Aileen, plagued by doubt, helplessly watching her teenage daughter grow distant; Moira, caught in a cycle of abuse and denial, stubbornly refusing help from those closest to her; Oona, in remission from breast cancer, secretly harboring misgivings about her marriage; Colleen, the leader of the group, worried about her fisherman husband, missing at sea. And outside this newfound circle is local artist Sullivan Deane, an enigmatic man trying to overcome a tragedy of his own.

Under Glenmara's spell, Kate finds the inspiration that has eluded her, and soon she and the lace makers are creating a line of exquisite lingerie. In their skilled hands, flowers, Celtic dragons, nymphs, fish, saints, kings, and queens come to life, rendered with painterly skill. The circle also offers them something more—the strength to face their long-denied desires and fears. But not everyone welcomes Kate, and a series of unexpected events threatens to unravel everything the women have worked so hard for. . . .

My take: The Lace Makers of Glenmara literally took my breath away. If I had to compare, I would say the last such books I read that affected me in this way were The Friday Night Knitting Club and Knit Two (which I also reviewed for Mother-Talk). All three books center on the power of friendship - how much our female friendships can define us - and how they can help you survive and even grow at the very times when you literally cannot go it alone anymore.

You know, during these lazy days of summer, you will find a lot of talk about "perfect summer beach reads" and while I hesitate to throw such a quality book into such a catchall category, The Lace Makers of Glenmara could do worse than be categorized as such. That being said, this book is so much more than an easy "beach" read though. Barbieri has crafted a fine tale about loss, friendship, family and the rediscovery of one's own self. This book will move you, make you weep (there is a death in the book I absolutely did not expect), and give you hope. One caveat - this book is very hard to put down so do try and pick it up when you have a few hours to spend with it or you will find yourself going without sleep the way I did! Needless to say, I highly recommend The Lace Makers of Glenmara for summer beach reading and beyond.

About the Author: The author of Snow in July, Heather Barbieri has won international prizes for her short fiction. She lives in Seattle with her husband and three children.

Season One: DVD Trailer

Synopsis: Four million years after crash-landing on an unfamiliar planet, sentient robots with the ability to disguise themselves as common vehicles awaken on present-day Earth. Engaged in a crucial race to find a new energy source for their home planet of Cybertron, Optimus Prime and the heroic Autobots must defend the innocent people of Earth against their archnemeses, Megatron and the power-hungry Decepticons.

My take: I must confess that until we received this DVD set to review, I personally had never seen this series. It debuted in 1984 apparently when I was all of 13 years old. And as a 13 year old girl, I was way more interested in horses than robots of any kind. Now, of course, as the mother of a boy, I have to educate myself on what is appealing to a boy when he plays. And my 6 year old is ALL boy. And let me tell you, he loves-loves-loves these Transformer DVDs. He insists I do not even press "play" until the entire intro music plays so he can sing along with it. And he watches them every.single.chance he gets (in between his sister's Barbie movie choices). The only weird thing about this set is because it was made directly from the original T.V. series, they kept the commercial breaks in there, without the commercials! So you keep seeing "we'll be right back after this break" and then "We're back!" But that doesn't bother my son at all. And this is a nice alternative to let him watch until he is old enough for the live action Transformer movies he so desperately wants to see. Check it out for yourself in this clip from the DVD:

Season One: Clip 1

Bonus Features Include:
• Restored To The Original Broadcast Versions With A New Stereo Soundtrack Created From The Original Audio
• Triple Changer: From Toy To Comic To Screen – The Origins Of The Transformers
• A Printable Script
• Rare PSA

Academy Award®-Nominee Tom Cruise Stars In Bryan Singer’s Suspenseful WWII Thriller, Debuting On Blu-ray Disc And Two-Disc Special Edition DVD With Digital Copy May 19th From MGM Home Entertainment

Loaded With Over Three Hours Of Blu-ray Disc Special Features Including Commentary By Cruise And Singer, Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes And More

From the studio: The remarkable yet seldom told true story of the German Resistance’s attempted coup and assassination of Adolf Hitler reveals itself when Valkyrie is released on Blu-ray Disc and Special Edition DVD with Digital Copy on May 19th from MGM Home Entertainment. Set in Nazi Germany, Valkyrie chronicles the daring and ingenious “July 20 plot” to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Oscar-nominee Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible, Minority Report) stars as the loyal German nationalist Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the mastermind behind the plot to kill Hitler and overthrow his fascist regime.

Convinced the Nazi leader must die at all costs, Stauffenberg joins with a group of similarly disillusioned officers and civilians whose like minds come together for a common purpose in the face of incredible odds. Directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects), Valkyrie boasts “…a top-notch international cast…” (Entertainment Weekly) including Academy Award-nominees Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet, Henry V), Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton, In The Bedroom) and Terence Stamp (Get Smart; The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert), as well as Bill Nighy (The Constant Gardener, Love Actually) and Eddie Izzard (Ocean’s Thirteen, “The Riches”).

For its theatrical debut, Valkyrie was one of the biggest grossing box office adult movies of the past holiday season.

Synopsis: “Tom Cruise gives one of the best performances of his career” (Jeffrey Lyons, NBC/Reel Talk) in this action-packed film from the director of The Usual Suspects and X-Men. Based on the incredible true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) and his ingenious assassination plot targeting Adolf Hitler, this engrossing thriller reenacts the daring operation to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Co-starring Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and Eddie Izzard, Valkyrie delivers gripping suspense and pulse-pounding excitement from start to finish.

My take: To tell you the truth, I didn't expect to like this film for one big reason - I don't care for Tom Cruise. Shocking but true. But regardless of what I think of him as a person, even I have to admit he is an outstanding actor. And in Valkyrie, Cruise is in his element as Colonel von Stauffenberg. Very quickly he and his fellow actors drew me in and held me for the duration of the film with their compelling portrayals of their characters. I found myself rooting for their plot to succeed even knowing (by knowing my history) that it wouldn't. If you are a student of history, Valkyrie is a must see - I'm always fascinated to see the stories from history class played out on the screen - certainly it makes them more real for me. And for me, Valkyrie provided a new prospective to the Nazi era to me - prior to watching it, I must admit I had never given a thought to how the German people (the common man or the military man) felt about him. If asked, I would have hazarded a guess that they were all led by blind allegiance to the monster. Of course, that's not true and Valkyrie provides a great example of that. Even so, even if you couldn't care a wit about history, I do recommend this film because it's a great keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat drama and that's not a bad way to spend your evening.

Blu-ray Disc Specs: Valkyrie Blu-ray Disc will be presented in widescreen format with English 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio; Spanish & French 5.1 Dolby Digital; and Spanish, French, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin & Brazilian Portuguese subtitles. Bonus features include:

Safety Tats

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS
TINA, DEIDRE, & SARAH (non-blogger)!!

From Safety-Tat: The Quick Stick Write-on! applique skin-safe peel and stick "tattoo" is comprised of a micro-thin elastomer with FDA approved medical grade adhesive that is hypoallergenic and skin safe. Customers write emergency information on the tattoo using the supplied tattoo marking pen, which is compact, easy to use, and completely waterproof.

Once the Safety Tat is applied to the skin and parents write on a mobile phone number, it is on there until the parent decides to take it off! This product is opaque, highly vibrant and works on all skin shades equally well. Best of all, to apply the tattoo you need NO WATER! None. Simply peel an stick - Quick Stick! Once on, the super-durable material can last for weeks! Removing the Quick Stick Write-On! couldn't be simpler: Simply lift the edge with a fingernail and peel off like a band-aid.

My take: Back in January, I reviewed a whole variety of Safety-Tats, including the Quick Stick Write-On! product. Well, just in time for the summer vacation season (perfect for all our family summer activities with and without the kids {don't forget about keeping your kids safe when they are not with you too} - theme parks, zoos, day camps, overnight camps, vacation bible school, etc.), Safety Tat has expanded the Quick Stick Write-On! line to include eleven different versions of it (and the tattoo marking pens can be purchased separately too).

Safety-Tat sent me the Quick Stick Write-On! Multi-Design 4-pack ($7.99) to check out and my opinion of these incredible "tattoos" have not changed a bit since January. While the classic safety-tats are still great, these Quick Stick Write-On!s are even better for two reasons - 1) I don't have to be stuck with one mobile number - our pre-printed ones have my husband's mobile number on them but what if the kids are somewhere with me while he is out of town? Now in those situations, I can write in my mobile number instead. And 2) did you catch this above? "No water required." Awesome - even easier to apply than ever before.

Multi-Design 4-pack for Boys and Girls with FREE SafetyTat tattoo marking pen. Winner of the iParenting Media Greatest Products Award, Mr. Dad Seal of Approval and the National Parenting Seal of Approval. Adorable Dino, Cow, Sand Castle and "In Case of Emergency" designs that both boys and girls love. Includes 4 skin safe tattoo appliques (1 dino, 1 cow, 1 sand castle, 1 "In Case of Emergency"), 4 skin prep wipes, and one tattoo marking pen.

Bonus: use the code CPAMomVA (must be typed exactly like that) for 15% off an order of $15 or more. Coupon expires on July 6, 2009.

The giveaway: Three lucky readers will win their very own Quick Stick Write-On! Multi-Design 4-pack!

To win: Visit and come back here and leave me a comment telling me about one other Safety-Tat not mentioned in this review. Pet Pals®: New Leash on Life

Pet Pals®: New Leash on Life
982 MB, Price: $19.99
Help the animal shelter give sick and disadvantaged pets a happier, healthier life. Learn about animals while having fun.

From the PR Firm: Legacy Interactive® announced today that the latest title in their award winning Pet Pals® series, Pet Pals: New Leash on Life, is now available at retail as a hybrid disc for the PC and Mac. The software has been awarded a prestigious Parents’ Choice Gold Award, the highest level of recognition, for spring 2009. The awards have been handed out by the Parents' Choice Foundation since 1978, and are meant to direct parents to the best software, games, DVDs, toys, books, music, magazines and websites.

Previously only available for download on the PC via legacygames.com, Pet Pals: New Leash on Life is now available for the first time to Mac gamers as well. In the simulation-vet game players experience what it is like to play as an actual veterinarian by diagnosing, operating, taking care of, feeding and playing with virtual pets. In the game players will encounter more than 30 different animal cases, derived from practicing veterinarians, and will have access to more than 45 realistic medical tools including a stethoscope, EKG machine, scalpels, and an ophthalmoscope. These tools allow the player to gather samples, palpitate and examine the animals, and even perform surgery.

The cases in Pet Pals: New Leash on Life range from minor; a cat fight that resulted in an infected scratch, to more serious emergencies involving an overweight dog who has torn a ligament in their knee from too much activity. The player must heal and nurture these animals, along with 15 breeds of dogs, cats, rabbits, and a wide variety of other animals. When players are successful at treating and adopting out their rescued animal patients, they get a promotion. With each promotion the player is given more responsibilities and increasingly more difficult cases to handle. Just as in the real world, during game-play, emergencies arise that require immediate attention and players must prioritize their cases to make sure every animal has a successful recovery.

In the enrichment element of the game, players get to interact with their animals as they are recuperating by petting them, playing fetch, teaching new tricks, grooming, and more, in order to get them ready for adoption. Players have the opportunity to follow up with their animal patients to see how they succeeded with their treatments and will receive messages from the adoptive family updating them on the progress of the animals. The game also includes a variety of engaging mini-games with tons of animal trivia and information on careers in the animal world.

Consistent with Legacy’s frequent efforts to work with nonprofits, a portion of the sales from Pet Pals: New Leash on Life has been donated to provide financial support for The Humane Society of the United States.

Rated E for Everyone, Pet Pals: New Leash on Life is a hybrid disc for the PC and Mac. The game has an MSRP of $19.95 and is available at retailers nationwide. Additional information can be found at www.legacygames.com. To read the full Parents' Choice Award review of Pet Pals: New Leash on Life, go to www.parentschoice.org

My take: When I first received this game from Legacy Interactive's PR firm, I had a lot of trouble loading it. That's because the game says it can be loaded on Windows 2000, XP or Vista. Um, no. My daughter's computer is Windows 2000 and the game refused to load without a certain version of Quicktime (a free download from Apple) - a version that happens to not be available unless you have XP or Vista (urgh!). Next step, loading it on my husband's workstation (which has Vista) - again, no go - the sound would not work. I have no idea why this time (I am not computer hardware/software literate as you can see). Finally though, I installed it on my laptop (Vista) and success, it worked perfectly.

At that point, I called in my 4 year old (who is animal crazy!) and we sat down to play. Visually, this is a great game - very realistic. My daughter loved taking care of all the pets but Sunshine the cat was her favorite (figures since I am not a fan of cats)! There is no way she could play this game on her own though - look at the picture above - you have to read the screens (with advanced vocabulary!) to move along in the game. An annoying piece of the game too is how long it takes to switch from "scene" to "scene" as you progress. Minor annoyance though as my daughter loved the game so much - and I enjoyed having some quality time with just her and me, learning about something new together (you really do learn a lot about the different animals you are examining). If you have a child who loves animals (or you do!), be sure to check out Pet Pals®: New Leash on Life.

Strider™ bikes

You know, I still remember when I first learned to ride a two-wheeled bike because I was 12. That's right, I didn't learn to ride without training wheels until I was TWELVE! Why?? Because I had major problems with my ears - 3 surgeries before I was even 5 years old and my surgeon told my mom that I would never be able to ride a bike. Well, I kept on working on it and eventually I was able to ride a two-wheeler. Of course, I wonder if I could have done it sooner if a balance bike had been around:

More fun than you can ever imagine, the Strider™ Run Bike or Balance Bike teaches young kids to ride two wheel bikes hassle free in a matter of hours. You have to see it to believe it!

Description (from the website):

  • One of the most ADJUSTABLE balance bikes available - handlebars adjust 3" in height, seat adjusts 5" in height plus 2" more with optional seat post.
  • One of the LOWEST seat heights in today's market - lowest seat setting is just 11" from the ground.
  • One of the LIGHTEST run bikes in the industry - at only 6.9 lbs, it is less than half the weight of most tricycles.
  • Only balance bike with Frame-integrated Launch Pad™ FOOTRESTS - ergonomically designed directly below the seat. Allow for comfortable gliding with feet up and facilitate development of advanced riding skills.
  • EVA Polymer Tires are both kid and parent friendly - they are light weight, airless and extremely durable.
  • User-specific Progression™ Headset - lighter than most bearing headsets, has no grease, and requires no adjustments. While the child is breaking in the bike, its steering speed damping effect is important for young riders learning to keep both hands on the handlebars. As their skills and speed increase, so will the steering.
  • OPTIONAL FOOT BRAKE - a fantastic feature that adds fun and skill development for the advanced rider.
  • 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE - if you are not satisfied with your Strider™ Balance Bike, we will refund your purchase price.A Strider™ running bike gets kids started riding younger, keeps them riding longer, and offers them the opportunity for advanced skill development. It's a real winner!

Tie Dye with Jacquard Products

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS
MERICI !!

From the PR Firm: Want a Shirt to "dye" for? Tie one on with groovy kits by Jacquard. The folks at Jacquard Products, makers of extremely high quality dyes and inks that hold fast and color deeply, offer two versions of their tie-dye kit to bring out the inner hippie in all of us. Let's face it, tie dye is in! Now, even do-it-yourselfers can bring professional creativity to their home, school, patio or anywhere they wish to create wearable art.

The phrase groovy may have been uttered by the brothers of Joseph who envied his coat of many colors in the Biblical story of Joseph, made famous by the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was a work of art and probably tie dyed! The art of tie dye, so prevalent in the hippie days of the ‘60s and ‘70s, is actually an ancient craft. It’s lucky for today’s generation that tie dyeing a simple white shirt can have eye-popping results, especially when using a do-it-yourself kit. For close to 30 years, textile artists and siblings alike have sought out Jacquard Products, makers of professional-quality textile paint and dyes at the best value.

Two of Jacquard’s most popular kits for families are Tie Dye Kit and Funky Groovy Tie Dye Kit. The do-it-yourself arts and crafts products wowed the judges at Parents’ Choice Foundation -- who annually identify the very best products for children of different ages and backgrounds -- and earned their prestigious Seal of Approval. The dyes included with both kits are Procion MX which allow the most outstanding results available to home tie dyers and fine artists alike.

“Finding arts and crafts activities to keep the attention of children of all ages is never an easy task,” writes website kidazy.com, “however, tie dye crafts have always been a great way to entertain children and adults of all ages. The great part about tie dye is that even adolescents, who really hate family activities, come together to see what kind of artsy color combinations they can put together.”

At
Jacquard Product’s website there’s even an online forum to answer any concerns. There’s no such thing as a dumb question as, incredibly, hundreds of viewers read and respond to the urgent message of the hour from a college student’s task of creating 150 event shirts to a mom’s dilemma on using the dryer versus waiting to air dry a table full of 6-year-olds’ colorful tee shirts.

Choose the Jacquard product based on the quantity of shirts to be tied and dyed:

Jacquard Funky Groovy Tie Dye Kit • $11.95
Perfect for ages 5 & up (with adult supervision) this kit is a delightful introduction to the art of tie dye! The kit includes everything a parent needs to supervise the creation of up to 5 adult t-shirts. Get professional results in just 3 easy steps. The kit includes pre-measured dye in red, blue and yellow plus 1/3 lb Dye Fixer, 3 Squirt (mixing) bottles, a pair of rubber gloves, a bunch of rubber bands and easy-to-follow instructions with suggested tying patterns.

Jacquard Tie Dye Kit • $19.95
Great for sleepovers or a teen gathering, this award-winning kit is big and includes enough dye for up to 15 cotton shirts. Each kit includes pre-measured Procion MX dyes in red, blue, and yellow, 4 squirt (mixing) bottles, 1/3 lb. dye fixer, set of rubber gloves, rubber bands plus complete instructions including tying patterns!

Once a budding artist masters the basic white t-shirt, the tie dyeing possibilities are endless – consider coloring pillows, white canvas sneakers, handkerchiefs, white shorts, socks, tank tops and so much more! Create a wardrobe to dye for that’s priceless, completely unique and fashionable (yet so affordable)!

My take: Michael Katz, President of Jacquard Products, said "With our kits, the art of tie dye couldn't be easier, and with the fine quality of our dyes, everyone can get stunning results.” Well, at least for me, I think a bit of practice might be in order before I get "stunning" results!

Jacquard Products sent me the Jacquard Funky Groovy Tie Dye Kit to try out. The instructions seem simple enough: (1) wet garment (I used four plain cotton shirts I picked up at Wal-Mart for $3.50 each) and tie with rubber bands (using the included instructions, I did the spiral and the accordion fold); (2) soak in soda ash for 20 minutes (I used the stainless steel buckets I use for strawberry picking - they hold a gallon each and you need two gallons of water for this kit) (3) mix the dyes with tap water; then (4) apply dye, wait 24 hours, rinse, wash, dry and enjoy!

The process itself was easy enough and fun too. But here is how the spiral shirt is supposed to turn out:

and here is how my shirts actually turned out (you can see the accordion ones did a little better):

My kids of course still love the shirts. I heard a lot of "SO COOL, Mom!" when I took them from the dryer. I'm thinking I need to buy another kit AND this instruction book and try again!

$29.98 U.S. / $43.48 Canada (Single Disc)

Synopsis: When a former spy’s estranged daughter is kidnapped in France, he sets out to find her at any cost. Relying on his special skills, he tracks down the ruthless gang that abducted her and launches a one-man war to bring them to justice and rescue his daughter.

From the studio: A former spy relies on his special skills and killer instinct as he hunts down the men who kidnapped his daughter in Taken, an adrenaline fueled drama available on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and two-disc extended cut DVD with digital copy May 12 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Academy Award®-nominee* Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List) stars as Brian Mills, a former secret agent trained in hand to hand combat who struggles as a divorcee and father of 17-year old Kim (Maggie Grace, “Lost”). Living with Brian’s ex-wife Lenore (Famke Jansson, X-Men: The Last Stand), Kim rarely gets the chance to see her father, but when she does he is often smothering and overbearing. When the opportunity arises to travel to Europe with her best friend, Kim convinces her dad to let her go on the trip by leaving out some very important details. The first stop for the girls is Paris, but hours after they arrive they are victims of a disturbing break-in and abducted by an Albanian criminal organization. Now, with only 96 hours to find his daughter before she will disappear forever, time is running out and Brian Mills must put his CIA expertise to the test before its too late.

Loaded with action, suspense and excitement at every turn, the Taken Blu-ray Disc and DVD reveal an intense two-disc extended cut of the film with Digital Copy for portable media players.

My take: If you have a child, you know what I am talking about when I say the loss of my children is my biggest fear. So it was with some trepidation that I watched Taken since it's very premise is the kidnapping of a daughter. Luckily, I still enjoyed the film - it is fantasy after all! That's not to say some of this could happen - it really could (which is why my children may stay at home under lock and key their whole lives....kidding, just kidding!). I do love action movies like this though and Liam Neeson as Brian Mills did not disappoint. I heard it described as a "riveting, revenge thriller" and that is a perfect description. The fight scenes were awesome and Neeson was equally impressive in the more tender, human moments - Taken is a perfect vehicle for showcasing his acting range. I promise you, you will stay glued to your seat the entire 90 minutes! If you love a good thriller/action film, Taken is a must-see for you.

Bonus features include:

Disc One
o Extended Cut seamlessly branched with Audio commentary with Director Pierre Morel, Writer Mark Kamen, and Cinematographers Michael Abramowicz and Michael Julienne

Diane Birch: Bible Belt

Bible Belt
by: Diane Birch

List Price: $9.99
Audio CD (June 2, 2009)
Original Release Date: May 19, 2009
Number of Discs: 1
Label: S-Curve Records

Product Description from Amazon.com: The daughter of a preacher, living between Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia, before her parents finally settled in Portland, Oregon, Diane Birch absorbed a unique and very cosmopolitan perspective on life and rapidly cultivated a very individual style that defies categorization. The buzz is building as Music Week announced, "Diane has a voice and songwriting ability that will connect with truly global audiences."

From the One2One Network (sponsor of this review): For singer-songwriter Diane Birch music was a refuge. Although Diane was born in Michigan, her childhood was spent on the move, as the daughter of a preacher, living between Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia, before her parents finally settled in Portland, Oregon when she was in her early teens, Diane absorbed a unique and very cosmopolitan perspective on life that shines through her music and makes a simple categorization of it impossible.

Diane Birch sounds like an old favorite, with all the sparkle and magic of a breakthrough talent. People says she sounds like a combination of early Carole King, Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks, with a little Joss Stone and Cat Power mixed in. Bible Belt is only her first record, but it’s one of the most accomplished albums you’ll hear all year. From the opening track “Fire Escape” to the closing “Magic View,” Diane’s stunning voice is mesmerizing. Written entirely by Diane, Bible Belt was recorded in New York City and New Orleans and produced by the impressive Grammy-winning team who reunited for the first time since producing Joss Stone’s first albums.

The result is an instant classic, mixing brilliant piano playing with easy-going soul, gospel, blues, and much more. Equally inspired by Carole King as she is by Jerry Lee Lewis and Elton John, Diane creates her own sound with exceptional songwriting. Her performance on the piano, Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Farfisa showcases an extraordinary ability, but her melodies and lyrics put her in a league of her own. How awesome is she? Prince once saw her play and was intrigued enough to invite her out to jam with him and his band at his home!!!

My take: Blues? Jazz? Gospel? Soul? Indie? While my iTunes software classified Diane Birch as "Blues," I think she defies such classification. In my humble opinion, she cannot (and should not) be pigeon holed into any one genre. She reminds me of Kathy Mattea when she sings "Forgiveness" and I can hear the comparison to Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks in "Don't Wait Up." I'm reminded quite a bit of my favorite indie band I used to listen to while in college called Fairchild (near St. Louis) when I listen to "Valentino" - which is my favorite tune by the way. Such a beautiful soulful voice - I literally put this CD in my player in the morning when I get to work and play it over and over, I like it that much! What a wonderful new artist - thank you One2One for sharing Diane Birch with me - I can't wait to follow her career.

Bonus: go here for an free MP3 download of ‘Fire Escape’. You can find Diane on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/dianebirch.

“Extremely powerful”—Jeffrey Lyons, NBC's "Reel Talk"

PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS THE EPIC TRUE STORY OF COURAGE, HONOR AND SALVATION

From the studio: Based on the extraordinary true story, the action-packed, epic tale DEFIANCE arrives on DVD and Blu-ray June 2, 2009 from Paramount Home Entertainment. Directed by Academy Award® winner Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond), DEFIANCE stars Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Jamie Bell (Flags Of Our Fathers) as brothers, simple farmers—outnumbered and outgunned—who turned a group of war refugees into powerful freedom fighters. The inspirational story of family, bravery and survival has been hailed as “gripping” (Larry King), “a must see” (Steve Oldfield, FOX TV) and “complex, engrossing and worth celebrating” (Richard Corliss, Time) and the film received Oscar® and Golden Globe® nominations for Best Original Score.

Synopsis from IMDB.com: "On the run and hiding in the deep forests of the then German occupied Poland and Belorussia (World War II), the three Bielski brothers find the impossible task of foraging for food and weapons for their survival. They live, not only with the fear of discovery, contending with neighboring Soviet partisans and knowing whom to trust but also take the responsibility of looking after a large mass of fleeing Polish Jews from the German war machine. Women, men, children, the elderly and the young alike are all hiding in makeshift homes in the dark, cold and unforgiving forests in the darkest times of German occupied Eastern Europe."

My take: George Santayana famously said "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Maya Angelou once said: "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again." And Robert F. Kennedy said "Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation."

Defiance is the story of the real life Bielski brothers who chose to "change a small portion of events" in the midst of one of the greatest periods of "wrenching pain" ever seen in our shared world history. Their actions, however small, changed the course of the world for so many and in doing so, inspired many to do the right thing, both then and now. It was through their courage, bravery and ingenuity that 1,200 Jews were saved from the Nazis.
Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber were perfectly cast as the two oldest brothers and they kept me riveted throughout the movie. Even as I was horrified watching the Nazi atrocities, I couldn't look away; I was literally on the edge of my seat. The story is a haunting one, a story that will stay with you long after you finish watching it. Even if you think you've seen or read everything there is to read about the horror of the Nazi regime, trust me when I say you haven't seen anything like Defiance. Students of history (as we all should be), I encourage you to watch this movie, learn from it, and embody the Bielski's brothers courage, perservance and humanity in your own lives. The world will be a better place for it.

Bonus: The discs include the following special features in high definition as noted:

• Commentary by director Edward Zwick
• Defiance: Return to the Forest (HD)—Explores all aspects of production from the early stages of pre-production to shooting on location in Lithuania. Edward Zwick and his creative team discuss some of the challenges and also the rewards of adapting this well-documented historical event into a feature film.
• Bielski Partisan Survivors (HD)—Photo gallery of images taken by Edward Zwick including behind-the-scenes images and surviving members from the Bielski Otriad.
• Children of the Otriad: The Families Speak (HD)—Descendents of the Bielski family tour the film's set and relate the story of the real-life partisans along with efforts to preserve the brothers' legacy.
• Scoring Defiance (HD) —Blu-ray only —Academy Award® nominated composer James Newton Howard and violinist Joshua Bell discuss the incredible film score for Defiance.
• Theatrical trailers (HD)

Take a peek here (a bonus clip from the DVD ) at the in-depth look at the making of the film called “Defiance: Return to the Forest”, interviews with the real-life descendants of the Bielski family and photographs taken by the director during the production:

Stackers’ Noah’s Ark

From the PR Firm: American children familiar with the story of Noah’s Ark can name many of the animals that endured 40 days and 40 nights of flooding. There are giraffes, lions, elephants, monkeys and bears. But what youngster would shout out, kangaroo? Aussie kids, that’s who! The Australian makers of a new line of toys known as Stackers has created an ingenious stack and play product line that kicks off with the debut of Noah’s Ark with, naturally, two kangaroos!

“Tier Toys was established after nine years of research and development,” explains Director Leah Romyn from her Australian office, “resulting in an extremely robust USA and Australian patent for an educational puzzle toy. The toy can be configured in any number of different products. This unique concept has rejuvenated the construction toy arena.”

Children opening the box for Stackers’ Noah’s Ark will be astonished with the intricacies of 12 different stackable layers of toy pieces. Each level uncovers two or more animals ready to walk down the plank for a play date. A total of 44 detailed figures in primary colors of red, blue, yellow and green includes Noah and his wife. Moms will especially adore one of the added benefits -- as the child completes playing with the Ark by putting all of the animals in their spots, he stacks up the Ark and cleans up his own clutter!

Respected toy consultant Richard Gottlieb echoes excitement for Stackers, stating, “the patent is truly amazing in what it covers and in the unique variety of products it will allow Tier Toys to produce. This is a product that has the potential to be a global success.”
Ark Stacker • $69.99
Just like Noah’s Ark, two of every sort of animal is tucked inside 12 layers of stackable play pieces that create a wondrous ark. A total of 44 details figures, including Noah and his wife, are packed in their own spot among the stacks. A free download of the story of Noah’s Ark allows children to relive the Biblical tale, plus enjoy six fun games and educational activities.

My take: My kids went wild over this - my son in particular since he is so precise! He put it together 3 times in a row the day we got the product sample and then asked to put it in his room so his sister wouldn't mess with "his" toy! A few weeks later, a friend of his came over to play and asked to play with the ark when she saw it. Her mom and I helped her take it apart and put it back together. Her mom and I asked her "Why do you like this toy so much?" and her response was because she liked sorting the pieces. She and my son are both very similar in nature - precise, detailed and dare I say, anal, so they like the idea of a toy that has a set order to putting it back together (each tray has a number and after finding which animals fit in each tray, the kids have to find those numbers and stack the trays back up in numerical order),
I, myself, liked the ark because not only does it help with fine motor skills (putting the animals back in their slots and stacking the trays), it encourages imagination (once the animals are out, my daughter likes acting out the actual Noah's ark story that she learned in Catholic school this year) and teaches a bit too (learning about all those different animals on the ark!). And I completely agree with the press release - what parent wouldn't like a toy that by it's very nature is self-cleaning! Be sure to click here to see a video of the ark and how its pieces easily pull apart and are stacked back together.

The first of many planned Stacker products, Noah’s Ark, will be available soon online and at specialty toy retailers.
About Tier Toys: "Play is a child’s work and toys are the tools children use in play" is the motto of Tier Toys. The company has six products in its second-release range for Fall 2009 and is expecting to license several toy-makers who are seeking to use the patent across their existing toy lines. For more information, log on to tiertoys.com.

LEONARDO DICAPRIO & ACADEMY AWARD ® WINNER* KATE WINSLET REUNITE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON SCREEN IN ONE OF THE YEAR’S MOST CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED FILMS

From the studio: “Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are brilliant” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) in the mesmerizing epic REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. Nominated for three Academy Awards® and four Golden Globes®, the emotionally gripping film has been called “amazing” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), “flawless” (Rex Reed, New York Observer) and a “masterpiece” (Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle). Directed by Oscar® winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and adapted from the groundbreaking novel by Richard Yates, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD won Kate Winslet her first Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Reuniting DiCaprio and Winslet for the first time on screen since Titanic, the incisive portrait of a 1950s American marriage unfolds as an enthralling drama that is moving, thought-provoking and “a revelation” (Clay Smith, “The Insider”).

Synopsis from IMDB.com: April and Frank Wheeler are a young, thriving couple living with their two children in a Connecticut suburb in the mid-1950s. Their self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job, and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career. Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities, free of the consumerist demands of capitalist America. As their relationship deteriorates into an endless cycle of squabbling, jealousy and recriminations, their trip and their dreams of self-fulfillment are thrown into jeopardy.

My take: If you watch this movie expecting to see a reprise of the roles played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the epic drama Titanic, you will be sorely disappointed. If, however, you approach the film expecting a film about the meaning of life, lost dreams and a commentary on just what it means to live a fulfilling life, you will be enthralled by this film. I know I was.

One of my favorite quotes is: “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation” (Henry David Thoreau). This movie, Revolutionary Road, is a perfect reflection on such a life. Frank and April Wheeler are struggling to live a meaningful life while "stuck" in the suburbs - definitely not somewhere they ever thought they'd end up. They are in the midst of self medicating their despair with alcohol, cigarettes and affairs on both sides, but to no avail. So they come up with a scheme to move to Paris and begin again. Of course, something happens to derail their plans and how they deal with that "something" both individually and as a couple is the focus of the remainder of the story.

I can tell you that I, myself, saw the ending coming but was still riveted to the very end. This is a tough movie to watch, but a necessary one. One that will leave you reflecting on your own human condition, and your own life for days to come. And asking yourself if you are living your own life in quiet desperation or not.

BONUS FEATURES: The discs include the following special features in high definition as noted: • Commentary by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe • Lives of Quite Desperation: The Making of Revolutionary Road (HD) • Deleted Scenes with optional commentary by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe (HD) • Richard Yates: The Wages of Truth (HD)—Blu-ray only

Nowali moccasins

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.
CONGRATULATIONS
TERRA H.!

From the PR Firm: Sweden’s Famous Slipper Sock, A Global Favorite Since 1950, Has Real Staying Power: Mom knows best: when little ones turn into toddlers, they need footwear that is practical, fun and stays on too!

Kids are always pulling off or kicking off shoes and slippers that are uncomfortable and no fun to wear. To solve the problem, savvy moms around the world turn to Sweden for classic moccasins by Nowali (rhymes with grow-a-tree).

Nowali moccasins are a cozy sock-in-a-soft-shoe that stay on kids’ feet. The one piece design makes them super easy to put on, and the double elastic at the top helps to keep them on. Because they are soft and have fun designs, kids want to wear them all the time.

Confetti Price: $24.95

Nowali moccasins are especially popular with children who are starting to walk and run around the house. The non-skid soles really help prevent slips and falls on hardwood and tile floors. As parents know, pediatricians generally recommend footwear with flexible soles to help the foot muscles and arches develop naturally.

Winner of The New Parents Guide Seal of Approval, Nowali slipper socks have been keeping little feet happy for over 50 years. This year, Nowali introduces adult versions of their cozy footwear. The company also sells fashion cotton tights. Swedish products are often known for high quality, and Nowali is committed to providing the best products for kids’ feet. The yarns and foxing material in Nowali moccasins are certified to comply with the Öko-Tex Standard 100, an ‘eco’ standard which ensures they contain no harmful dyes or substances.

The website offers helpful tips for parents to order online including a handy size chart with U.S. and European sizes, ages and heel-to-toe measurements for a sure fit. Nowali moccasins retail for $24.95. In early July, Nowali will launch its Fall/Winter 2009 Collection. Eager parents can preview the new whimsical children’s patterns now, online. The original moccasin style, in solid cable knit, will return next season in 8 colors, each with an elastic strap and always a best seller. Also new next season are moccasins in women’s sizes. Moms (and grandmoms) can get cozy wearing the pink Nordic or the brown striped, both in sizes 7/8 and 9/10.

In addition to the moccasins, Nowali’s fashion tights are a customer favorite (colorful tights are another Swedish tradition). These don’t “bunch up” like other tights due to their 85% cotton, 10% lycra and 5% nylon fabrication. The newest patterns for Fall/Winter 2009 are now on preview including crazy legs, dots, hearts, leopard and metallic. Tights range in size from 1 to 8 years.

My take: We received a pair of these Big Kid Boys Stripes (price: $28.95) to try out (I had requested a pair for my 6 year old son since my daughter has 3 pairs of house slippers already). Looking at their size chart, I requested a size "10Y (US shoe size 1/3)" since my son wears a size 3 shoe, and 10Y is their largest size. Let me tell you, his foot barely fits in these moccasins. Which disappoints me no end because these moccasins? Are AWESOME. Shoes and socks in one. Quality material that is washable and comfortable. As Diane Reznik, Nowali’s Sales Manager and co-designer, says: “Our feature product is our famous Swedish moccasin. This item is a unique combination of a sock and a shoe: knit sock upper with a leather sole and color coordinated foxing. The moccasins are still stitched together by hand in the traditional Swedish way.” Once we got them on, my son did not want to take them off either. And as hokey as it seems, his interest in them was renewed after we visited the Jamestowne Settlement this week and learned about life in the Powhatan village in the 1600s. So if you have kids with feet smaller than size 3, you can't go wrong ordering Nowali moccasins. Me? I'm going to order some of their tights for my daughter for this winter with that 10% off code (see below)!

About Nowali: Nowali began in central Sweden in 1950 and the company is still located there today. Nowali products are sold around the world. The U.S. market has been especially successful as American moms appreciate the combination of great quality, whimsical designs and a proven brand name. One of the comments often heard at Nowali is, “I remember those from when I was a kid!” To order online or for more details, visit www.nowali.com.

Bonus: use coupon code HAPPYFEET for 10% off + free shipping for orders over $40 (good thru 12/31/09)!
